At first I thought it was cliche to put them together in the end because as the series was wrapping up I already accepted them as friends because in the very beginning of the season they each had a moment of attraction for each other, but then they were pushed into stereotypes of being gay and being transgender. When everyone looks at Fraser, they automatically assume he's gay from the way he looks and that sets him on a sexually confusing journey. When Caitlin and Fraser first meet, Fraser puts the idea in Caitlin's head that she might be transgender, but in reality she just likes to do what boys normally like to do. The message of the show is we shouldn't let society put labels on us. We Are Who We Are.

In the whole series their relationship was platonic, i didn't expect it this at all, i thought it'll stay platonic, i didn't expect much of a plot development or twist in this episode, kept my expectations low and just wanted to enjoy the concert tbh , i believe Luca's works are more characters and settings driven, this ending was very unexpected, and i think it is perfect . Harper realized she didn't want to be a boy, she did it to make Fraser like her. In fact in the whole series they are getting to know each other and the point of the series is that sometimes we are wrong about our identity and that's fine ❤ He thought he was searching for a boy and she tought she was searching to be a boy but in actuality they were just searching for each other✨
@fkatwigsisthequeenofenglan47483 роки тому
I feel like that story isn't told enough. I'm only 23 but went thru the exact same feelings as harper when I was 16-18. I hope you guys know how lucky you are to have media such as this for you to see at your age. I wish shows like this were around when I was in high school. it would have made things much easier. I feel like these stories of exploration and discovery needs to be explored more in media. my favourite part was also when the trans backup singer for blood orange turned around and smiled at harper before returning onto stage.

@graceli61823 роки тому
I think Caitlyn wanted to be more masculine because she grew up around such strong male figures (like her brothers and her dad and men on the military base) that did the things she wanted to do and barely had any representation of strong women figures. I don't think it had anything to do with Fraser at all. And honestly I interpreted the scene of her washing off her beard and running off from the bartender to be because she didn't like how she wasn't passing completely as a male. I think it threw her off when the bartender could sense that she was a female to male trans person and I think she wanted to just pass as a cis male. I don't think it's that she doesn't want to be masculine anymore. I could be wrong but that's how I interpreted it. Also in my opinion Fraser and Caitlyn's relationship was never romantic and honestly I don't think it ever will be romantic. I think the ending kissing scene was supposed to be symbolic of how deeply they cared for and supported each other and a simple hug couldn't express that fully. Or maybe it was suppposed to be romantic. who knows. I loved the show though this ending scene made me cry so much

@ramonaflowers28133 роки тому
@@graceli6182 I agree with you the bartender upset her the same way her first girl she kiss upset her as she was told"I know your a girl" and "you are trans right". I dont know if she has gender dysphoria but imagine having that and being clocked or told what gender you are biologically are when you have tried so hard to mask yourself it's heartbreaking. What I do think though is that she sees her mother as weak she wants to be like her Dad she has been groomed by him to be macho and tough and she just sees that as desirable traits and wants to fit that mold. So she goes of and creates Harper so she could be the full embodiment of what she sees on her friends and her Dad. I do think there is more than friendship love between her and Fraser I do not kiss my friends like that lol. I think Caitlin did explore this trans journey a little bit more because Fraser came into her life and Fraser was smitten with her the very first time he saw her. Remember when he talked about his imaginary friend how he stared at the boy he wanted to the point he got creepd out he did the same thing with Caitlin just that she didn't get creepd out. There were hints throughout their journey that showed they had more feelings towards each other Caitlin git mad that Frasier kissed a girl for eg, it just caught as by surprise because the viewers made up.in our minds that Fraser was gay and Caitlin was trans and liked girls. Yet they both never said these things about themselves. It's our faults for just painting their sexuality in one box, they are still discovering it themselves.
@ramonaflowers28133 роки тому
That kiss had so much love understanding and happiness in it, I didn't even think it was possible. Imagine being understanding and loving of someone so complexed as either of these characters Caitlin saw Fraiser apathy to other people's grief his hate towards his mother she never judged him and Fraser saw Cate's gender dysphoria and was just there to accept her and love her..I just it was beautiful

The title of the show is one of the most accurately executed titles I’ve came across. Us viewers trying to depict this scene and these characters, wanting to label their sexuality, preferred pronouns, love interest etc. While leaving a lot of those things up in the air. But this scene I believe tells you, it doesn’t matter what “you” think because to them “we are who we are” and that’s all that matters.

@blissin4443 роки тому
this ending was perfect in my opinion. i believed it was clique to put them together at first but as the show went it was so unexpected for this scene to happen but it was perfect. people automatically assumed fraser was gay because of the way he carried himself but i truly don't believe it is that. gender anr sexuality are a spectrum and fraser and caitlin really showed that. i see some people saying that caitlin and fraser's relationship is platonic and i just can't agree with that. i say this because fraser always knew that their was tension between them. never have i had to clarify to a friend of mine "we won't kiss," fraser knew something was going to end up happening between them, but at the time he couldn't fathom it. a lot of people are confused by fraser and caitlin's characters, as well, but i believe fraser is on the autism spectrum and caitlin isn't transgender, but was finding herself. episode 8 is when you can finally see that the two characters realized they have feelings for each other. the whole season they tried to distract themselves with other people and things, and it was those last ten moments in episode ten where fraser and caitlin realized they don't need anyone else, but each other, and they didn't have much time left together because caitlin was leaving. their kiss was intimate, was nothing platonic, there was so much passion behind it compared to other kisses that they shared with separate characters on the shows. that is just my perspective on episode 8. :)
@ramonaflowers28133 роки тому
Perfect interpretation I hate how people are downplaying the kiss like it's just a friendship like Caitlin dint get mad when Fraser kissed a girl or Fraser wasn't enamored with Caitlin from the moment he saw her and that iPad video call was lovely.

I really loved this show. Specifically, Caitlin and Fraser's journey individually and together. From episode 1, I just kept trying to define things and to pin point what was happening (i'm an overthinker) but then it hit me that this show literally depicts life. And life can be whatever it wants to be. We label things to try and understand them to our limited knowledge but what's the point if life will just do it's own thing? Caitlin and Fraser's journey depict that. When they kissed, it was like a moment of letting go of labels and expectations but just allowing the love ,they have for each other, to lead them. It's brave how they unapologetically show themselves to the other but at the same time they're still figuring out who they are. It's a beautiful and hard thing, to just be whoever or whatever we are with the person or people we love. The possibilities for their relationship are endless. And I love that. Not everything in life has to be just one thing. This really was a coming of age series. The way Luca filmed this, I literally felt like I was walking alongside with them throughout it all.

@arnaldomarques7403 роки тому
This scene was so powerful, i mean, it shows that the kiss wasn’t something sexual but an expression of tenderness, like when you got so many feelings for someone and it kinda overflows, only words or hugs or even kisses wouldn’t be enough to demonstrate how you love that person, how you appreciate that person in your life, how you glad to have that person. I love Guadagnino and really hope for an second season cause there’s so many subjects to continue and discuss, and would worth it
@bethonice85153 роки тому
Since ep 1 I was rooting for them because when Fraser saw her he really "saw" her if you know what I mean, then they became friends and accepted, supported and love each other like no one else in their lives did. Sam told Caitlin, Craig said "they are soulmates" he was so damn right. When they kissed it wasn't a surprise for me bc I knew they had to realize by themselves after all those adventures they had with other people, they couldn't feel the same with them bc they were in love with each other. This is the best "best friends to lovers" storyline I've ever seen, their kiss was so passionate, sweet, pure & full of joy. ✨Masterpiece✨

Saw this in a review from Ben Travers for IndieWire, where he articulated my exact thoughts and I quote "Fraser and Caitlin will not be dictated to; their actions aren’t determined by anyone else, and their choices are their own. They didn’t kiss for our benefit. They kissed for theirs. Whether you read the title as a defiant declaration (“We are who we are, damn it!”) or a shrugging catch-all…it’s unapologetic and honest, open-minded and well-intentioned." I want to praise Luca Guadagino for making this tender moment that made me cry and listen to Prince's "The Love We Make" for days. Also according to the article, Guadagino's writing team already wrote an outline for Season 2, and they’d very much like to continue these characters’ stories.

@abass48803 роки тому
I don’t think the kiss was platonic in any way because the whole series and episode was both Caitlin and Fraser realising they’ aren’t who they’ thought they were. She realises she doesn’t wanna be a trans and Fraser realising he isn’t gay that’s why they both walked out on who they kissed in the episode. Their stories mirrored each other perfectly. They truly love each other unconditionally and accept each other just as they are, like can you blame them for wanting to kiss? kissing it's a way of expressing the emotions that you feel that are going to burst out of your chest, we can all see the love in the kiss it's not passion it's pure love and excitement, yes It was unexpected but it wasn't wrong, because I don't think anyone it's surprised that they love each other (if we take away the labels and judgements that we made about them during the movie) that's exactly the point of the movie, let people be who they are, feel what they want to feel, without having to label them or them having to explain themselves. they don't have to explain to us why they suddenly realized they love each other and why they were confused and clueless of what's going on. we all are clueless most of the time, but we don't try to discover ourselves to the extend that they both did, they are young and they are in their self discovery journey, and they are unapologetic about not following guide lines, the whole series made us expect just a platonic relationship, but if they feel romantic about each other who are we to tell them what they feel or not based on behavior, there is not certain way people should behave to fulfill expectations, they are characters but they represent so many people, based on the negative comments I wonder how many people in real life have suppress their feelings just they were against "expectations" like dude let people live, even if it's random, like the fact that you don't understand them, doesn't invalidate their feelings or who they are. so yeah I don't think this movie is about trans or bi representation, it's just about people embracing who they are even if they don't know who they are. like read the the title of the series and try to understand the message that they were trying to give with the ending, they were just honoring the tittle.

I honestly adored this show but I can't help the fact that I wasn't a huge fan of the ending and it makes me feel sad, because I thoroughly enjoyed this show. I think it may be because I saw a spoiler online. I think I really enjoyed their friendship and that I wanted it to remain platonic and not turn sexual and once they kissed, I thought their amazing friendship would turn into something more. I would like to think that the kiss was more symbolic of how much they both mean to each other and that they truly do love each other and it doesn't have to be sexual. I prefer having a show of a boy and girl becoming best friends than lovers. I think they are soul mates, but it doesn't necessarily have to be anything sexual. But otherwise, I loved this show and I'm definitely going to re-watch it soon and I feel like I will really enjoy it double the amount. ❤️ P.S. i read a comment say that this show is so good because everyone interprets it in their own way and i think that is so true! to me, this show doesn’t necessarily have a storyline, it is so natural like how life actually is. realistically, you don’t have a beginning, middle and end during your lifetime, you just let things happen naturally, and this is what the show captures. there are so many bumps, so many things that leave the audience confused or sad about, but it all happens so smoothly and naturally that you can be mad, you just roll with it too. and that’s why i love this show after watching it, because when i was actually watching it i didn’t understand it at all, but now i do after watching intervenes and reading comments like these. my absolute dream is to be in a movie/show like this, and to be one of these people you you can just realate to do much. ugh, this show is just so incredibly perfect.

this may just be my interpretation (and maybe i need to go back and rewatch the show) but i remember this ending seeming mildly platonic to me. after everything that happened fraser and caitlin were celebrating the state of authenticity and autonomy that they had both reached in their lives. and they celebrated by kissing each other because it was just the ultimate way to express their feelings; happiness and pride in themselves and for each other. we’re no longer meant to question what their sexualities are or whether or not caitlin is trans (or questioning or fluid) we’re just supposed to celebrate the calm they’ve reached.

I waited for this part the entire show and when it finally arrived I had some feeling of happiness as they kissed but then slight sadness as I’m not sure that this kiss was meant to be passionate/sexual I’m guessing it’s just a thankful kiss of knowing each other and finally feeling as though they know themselves but I’m happy either way🤎

I’m lovin how I’m seein all these detail paragraphs about how wasn’t sexual it was just passionate be me, I’m just thinking “that boy WENT FOR IT!”

Yeah it was clear to me. From the very beginning Fraser would stare at Caitlin / Harper at school and at home. He took pictures of her and later m--------ed to them if I remember correctly. And then the promise that they would never kiss and how defensive he was about people thinking they were dating, but they would watch each other fall asleep via video call while Caitlin was grounded. That seems more intimate than something you'd do with platonic friends. And Caitlin / Harper seemed passive about their relationships. But they texted Fraser the entire time they were hunting with their dad. And their dad seems to hate that they're growing up and becoming more distant from him and closer to Fraser. The passion that Fraser kisses Caitlin / Harper with and in the second kiss Caitlin / Harper pulls Fraser in for a kiss, reciprocating. He said before he didn't have the nerve with Mark but he actively went for Harper, followed him to the bar, accommodated his transness even though he felt conflicted at times about it, told him about trans stuff, used he / him pronouns for Harper in the car, cut Harper's hair (a big deal for trans men) gave Harper his clothes, which clothes are pretty important to Fraser. I think there is a message of it doesn't matter your sexuality or gender identity so much as long as you connect and love that person for who they are now. (But gay trans men exist, I am one and I think I wanted to see that. )

This may be a minor opinion, but for me, this kiss was a surprise that I haven't expected...ever. I mean, I've always seen Caitlin and Fraser as friends with different desires and even different spectrums of sexuality. I think they never showed any interest towards each other (if I'm wrong and there was a hint then I'm open to know what it was :)) and for me, it was kinda a random ending for a show. I expected Jonathan and Fraiser's relationship to go deeper...but it wasn't totally a real thing for me too (many people were talking about the age difference). Anyway, I realised that Caitlin's third kiss was the one that was finally good for her...well, third time lucky. But, on the other hand...is there anybody better for Fraiser here in Italy & for Caitlin too? They know each other well and they're connected because of music. But wasn't Caitlin supposed to leave the base? Or maybe it was just a kiss, without any further consequences? I like to discuss and this seemed like a great opportunity to talk about things. Any thoughts?
@adhamnassar62193 роки тому
It's a major opinion actually :'''''), thank you. For me there was no real secret about the intimacy between Fraser and Caitlin it was so such like his earlier movie CMBYN where there no real secrets everybody knows the truth but keep it in his small personal perspective.....I don't know about the fact if they were the best for each other and the series keeps it curiously open but still, the kiss was a surprise and added joy to me probably like anyone who watch the episode and it touched me how the episode was a memorial for Lucas father at the end.
@Ursorion3 роки тому
@@adhamnassar6219 Oh, I saw the memorial too. For me Luca's art is often without a significant plot, somebody even said that "he lets things happen". Also, I wish we saw Sarah and Maggie in this episode. I hope there will be another season...maybe things will get more clear!
@adhamnassar62193 роки тому
@@Ursorion of course i wish also there will be another season...I am curious to see the rest of the coming of age journey between those two.
@herroyalpeachness3 роки тому
@nobodyimportant. I think you are downplaying the intimacy and soulmate-like connection Fraser and Caitlin have. Their connection was far beyond just music. No, I don’t think there is someone “better”for each of them. I think at this point in their lives they each understand each other better than anyone else. That doesn’t mean that fact may change one day. But at this particular junction, they have found each other. And by the way I don’t think having music in common is a trivial connection, anyways. music is a form of communication. How else is someone supposed to know what’s on our minds if we don’t communicate? Everyone is having a singular experience in life. But if people connect through music, for a moment they understand each other and inhabit the same world. I don’t know if this makes sense
@Ursorion3 роки тому
@@herroyalpeachness No no, "music" in my monologue was one of the examples of things that connects them, I think that was the first thing that got into my mind when I was typing this. Of course they have a bond because of their talks, spending time and even those phone messages, they were cool to read. But I think that this music fact was a main thing in the finale. This song etc.

I think Fraser is definitely attracted to guys but still trying to find out if his also attracted to girls. Caitlin/Harper is the only “girl” he feels drawn to in the entire series, and since the beginning they (Cate/Harper) were not very feminine. Unlike Britney and Sole who were clearly feminine and do things a girl is supposed to do, Fraser wasn’t attracted to them when they try something. As for Caitlin/Harper, they might be trans or non binary, it was clear that they were not comfortable being seen as a girl, but felt confuse because they like guys (they def felt something for Fraser through the series) and was trying to like girls as a man is supposed to. At the end I think bot realised that, as the title says, We are who we are, Fraser and Cate/Harper are still trying to find themselves but that’s okay. They don’t need to rush.
