The point of Fraser and Jonathans encounter, was to expose Jonathan and his intentions with Fraser. A lot of people view the scene with Jonathan and his girlfriend as disgusting, as the writers romanticised the scene. You’re meant to feel disgusted and disturbed by the scene. That’s the point. Luca did not write this scene so intensely because “he’s a creep” but to display Fraser’s innocence and what Fraser thought he would get out of this potential romance. Instead, this scene abruptly breaks the romanticised boundaries and displays the disturbing reality of the “relationship” between the two. That’s why the specific scene is so grotesque because the narrative finally broke into reality for Fraser, to which he eventually realised how ugly the entire situation was, exactly like how ugly that exact scene was for the viewers. In the following scene, he leaves being exposed and misused, additionally he is witnessed being alone. This rhetoric additionally conveys a different ulterior, that we as viewers never fully saw. Fraser had nobody, relationships for Fraser were always difficult, both romantically and non-romantic. Many instant character dynamics in the show clearly displaying that, his Birth Mother, caitlin’s friend group, etc. However, this recent fruition between Fraser and Jonathan, saw an efficient progression from friends to potential lovers. Unlike other relationships. For example, caitlin and Fraser, Fraser never experienced such fast feelings, and falls for Jonathan. And with Jonathan being at the forefront, witnesses Fraser and his mother constantly interact harshly with each other. He views Frasers at his weakest and most vulnerable side, and though witnessing this learns that Fraser is an easy target. To me this was the most disgusting part of the two of them, not the exact scene, to imagine all this time someone’s motive was so vile and corrupt, and not spur of the moment. The fact that they planned this. It almost could infer that Fraser is not the first person to fall victim under them. How many previous? How many more? Another intention that might suggest his actions, is that Jonathan was attempting to reclaim his youth through Fraser. We, the audience, knows in earlier scenes that he he predominantly missed out on his youth due to his ongoing relationships with his family. Through these acts, Jonathan could claim a youthful person as his. Jonathan could have the opportunity to witness another persons youth. And ultimately, jonathan could experience youth. Maybe Jonathan, strived more for Frasers life than Fraser himself, but luckily that question goes unanswered. This scene is one of my favourites in the show, despite its disgusting and brutal nature,its realistic display of a current and vast issue of grooming that occurs for many lgbtq+ youth remains and stands so strongly. It doesn’t provoke conversation through its romanticisation but instead through its sheer ugliness. It displays it how it really is. Realistic, brutal but more importantly essential.

The only reason I loved john and frasers platonic relationship in the first few episodes was because I could tell John was Fraser’s way of exploring his sexuality.. and he soon realized that he did feel some way towards John that he thought he could never feel

There’s nothing beautiful about the relationship because it is gross and Jonathan entertained Fraser’s feelings way too much, but I think there is a lot of beauty and raw emotion in the longing that Fraser feels for him and the tension because of it

This doesn’t need a second season. It’s a moment captured in time. We’re just along for the ride and it’s perfect as is.

I really enjoyed this show and was hoping there would be another season. I watched it when it first came out but I think its time for a re-watch.

I loved this show. The writing, acting was pretty good too! The only thing I didn't get was Fraser acting out every time he saw his mom and her partner. If I ever acted like this, I wouldn't see the light of day for one year. I've never met any teenagers that has ever acted like this before.

I dont know this show but Ive read the comments and I learned a couple of things. Fraser is young (either 14 or 17) The army guy is old (either 27 or 30) And people are calling it disgusting. This is what I know and I am confused. I have not watched this show but I’m wondering, is there consent? From both guys? If yes, why are people calling that disgusting? When I was 16 I was in a relationship with a 26 yo. Yes there was an age gap, BUT I initiated it, I knew what I was doing... it was consensual, and of course my ex derived pleasure from that, would have been weird (especially for me) if not. The age of consent where I grew up is 16 (as in more places than you think in fact), and I get that if it’s a legal thing (like in the show), it may become a huge problem personally for the army guy but calling it disgusting just because we were raised in that culturally and socially constructed notion that everything below the arbitrarily set age of consent is awful and the army guy were a predator is just dillusional. At the end it counts that both parties agree and are happy. Everything else just takes away their freedom (especially the young guy’s freedom and ability) to choose and love whomever they please.
