I hate social media and technology but one thing it has done is made knowledge like this accessible to the layman if this were 20 years ago you would have to attend college to hear him speak now here it is right at your fingertips and that is great thing.

He is a truly stellar lecturer and always delivers, but I think you'll find that Sugrue is particularly fluent and passionate and illuminating when he is lecturing on Plato and Socrates. Sugrue is the kind of hero our children should have instead of soldiers and sportsball players and thugs.
@116Bears
@116Bears 2 роки тому
@@motisbeard I disagree on who our children's heroes should be. Obviously you missed that part about how children are entirely self interested. A human on it's way to adulthood will seek out people like Sugrue to idolize. Showing this to a child of any age is pearls to swine.

32:24 *Freud @ Rousseau* “Rousseau wants to fundamentally change society. Why? Because _we’re all corrupted by an evil world._ Freud says, _Look-you were evil to begin with. The world did with you what it could and it made you better than you would be and even that’s not very good.”_

It's a home run out of the stadium. The more you wrestle with the idea of whether stating we're "evil to begin with" is a bit much, the more you have to think, no, if left to my own devices over time, from infancy, without regulation, restraint and guidance, I'd be a selfish, violent, conniving, psychopathic tyrant...i.e. too close to what a modern day politician, bureaucrat, corporate profitbot or wokism activist is at present. Wait, it's almost like society and parenting styles are creating monsters that gravitate towards, obtain and then abuse power...over and over... "That's not very good."

38:56 *Science of psychoanalysis* “It is like literary criticism or theology right, in _that_ sense it is scientific. It is not scientific in the sense the physics is scientific. The unconscious is not an entity in the sense that the liver is an entity. When you stop making those category mistakes you can begin to really appreciate what a great thinker Freud is because he’s talking about something, the internal contents of our psyche, that just resists strict hard shelled scientific discussion.” “The truth is that which runs after truth.” -Lacan “Science fiction, like psychoanalysis, holds open the place of truth as a hole in knowledge and thus does not subsume certainty under the category of knowledge.” - Theresa Giron

Don’t know how many times I had to watch lectures of people that don’t understand the German interpretation of science, or a feminist getting upset about “Penis envy”, or how weird it is to want to have sex with your mother, blah, blah, blah… Too many simply don’t understand Freud’s terminology and then make a damn mountain out of a mole hill.

Brilliant. Brilliant Brilliant! The idea that Psychology is a "soft" science and negative criticism of the theories of Freud as not scientific I have heard before. What makes your lecture so convincing is the knowledge and detail you add to your analysis that I agree with. In addition you add humor that makes this lecture not only entertaining but plausible and convincing on an "unconscious" level- we more often agree with people we can laugh with. The idea of a Primal Family in Totem and Taboo as Freud's source for where we get the unconscious- you blew away as equating that notion with Santa Claus- imagination and no proof in extremis.

Freud proved absolutely nothing except for one thing. Freud proved that women are sexually pliable on cocaine. This he took fastidious notes on for data. If you wish to understand the human animal then might I suggest Dr. B. F. Skinner who actually proved almost everything he wrote and all who followed him proved that all he wrote was true and they never found things he missed.

I love using original terms in German to English. - Take this word _aufheben_ for example. The great philosopher *Hegel* also uses this term to explain a lot of things going on in his theories. In Swedish this translates into _upphäva._ "Upp" means _up,_ from Swedish to English. Which is weird compared to the English term _sublimation,_ having the meaning of something that is going "down" or "under". For some reason, the romance language tradition is using the opposite preposition compared to the Nordic language tradition. - Suppose it's the same figurative way so say something is going _up_ in smoke, as to something being burnt _down._ Either way, this seem to express similar type of metaphysical points. Very fascinating to get into the mind of long dead thinkers in this fashion!
