This tiny home build took me roughy a year to finish. Working long days and nights but I feel in the end it was all worth it. Many ups and downs for the whole year and as much as I love my tiny house, I'm not sure I'd do it again. At least to this extent!

This tiny home build was a dream/goal of mine for a long time. I decided to build a tiny home in May of 2022 and that is when I ordered my tiny home trailer and frame kit. It took about two months to receive that trailer and in those two months I spent many hours doing research and design. I moved into my shop space August 2022 which is when I started this build. The first few months were the hardest as a lot of that stuff was out of my comfort zone plus I haven't taken on a job of this size before. I've designed and built vans before but a full house was much harder. Once I started woodworking I was much more in my zone but many challenges seemed to come up daily as well as design changes. Durning the year of building I still needed to create content, do tours for my channel (which I love doing), attend shows/events, holidays, search for land to buy, and some how I was able to finish this build in one year and move to my property end of August 2023. I have a playlist of more detailed videos of the tiny home build, as well as many other playlists. Hope you enjoy and I welcome any questions as I'll try to answer them when I see them. Watching you build your tiny house, you have the knowledge to build a regular size house, it'll just take longer. Your build is amazing, Jarrod! I mean, you figured out the electrical, plumbing, heating, AC, insulation, etc. Damn.

Hey Jarrod - you must be so proud of your tiny - its absolutely epic man ! Congratulations on your accomplishment thus far 👏 Australia isn't as advanced in tinys compared to you - unless you know of a company that comes close to building near the standard you achieved. Lettuce know if you do. I want a thow. I'll be interested to hear how all systems perform once you've settled in. Good one man 🎉🎉

I’m surprised that you went with spray foam and not wool for insulation. Such a beautiful build! ❤
@TocciTours

Nothing against wool but spray foam is much more effective. I don’t use them on van builds because it can warp the metal
@jodymooney255

@@TocciTours I’ve not heard of that or seen any reviews either. Foam has more toxic properties, but it’s your beautiful tiny home. It’s truly amazing Jarrod.

Great Video. You have given me good ideas for my 24 foot Tiny house build. I'm going for that murphy bed system to save a ton of space. I will be going with a mini-split for my heating / cooling and maybe a cubic mini wood stove as backup heat. I've also decided to setup my solar, ground based, system in my shed / work shop connecting with 30 amp power cord like an RV. The water system, with a pressure tank, will also be in the shed. I'm 61 and will most likely deploy off-grid in a year or two. Will be using this time to build her out.

Looking forward to seeing this!! Was there any point during the build that you would change now that it's done, If anything? The size, wiring, workload, design, What was the most challenging point of the build? It's Apsolitly Beautiful And Brilliant as Always 💚🤟
@TocciTours
@TocciTours 5 місяців тому
Thank you! I'm not sure if I'd want to change anything honestly. The size is very mobile, but also not too small. I've made certain changes and upgrades after I moved in like the toilet and inverter. I guess the only thing I'd do different is build a 10x24 instead of 8x24. But if I did that then it would change my whole design and obviously my budget. I definitely spent a lot on this build and I'm not sure I'd get a ROI so that's something to consider too.

Personally, I think your tiny house build came out better than the vanwives' cabin reno and it took two of them to do the reno ( please don't tell them I said any of this, I watched all their reno videoes too). My point was you did the majority of the work on your build all by yourself, which is amazing.

Jarrod, would you recommend the tiny/small house route? Be brutally honest with me because I'd like to try it, but I have no idea of what I'd be getting myself into or should expect and/or how much I should be saving up before I even consider starting... Use your own place here as a reference point. :)

If you’re on the fence and able to afford it then I’d go try and stay at some airbnb tiny homes. Also there are tiny home shows all over the country and they are filled with useful information. For me it’s not so much can I. It’s more about location for me personally. I LOVE my tiny home and if I could place it in a city it would be best (for me). I’m also used to having the “less is more” mentality so I like it. If I was to ever sell I’d still have no more than a 400-600 square foot apt or condo. Regarding price, most tinys are around 100k and most builders offer financing. With that said they do rv loans for them so your payments are low, plus whatever costs for a spot. You don’t necessarily need to buy land as you can put it in a tiny home village or even rv park. Is it harder than traditional living? In some cases it is. Some cases it’s not. Things to consider is the value of the tiny home goes up or down based on tiny home market. It’s much different than real estate market. It’s very similar to having a house boat. I could go on and on with pros and cons but ultimately I can recommend yes or no because I don’t know you all that well, sorry. Hope the things I’ve said helps tho

@@TocciTours That's exactly what I wanted to know and the price is pretty close to what I expected too! C: Thank you for documenting your journey. Wish the real life part was shown more often rather than just the glamour side.

You should maybe think about building a rain catching device so you can keep getting free water (maybe)??? and just add filtration system. Just a suggestion I saw in another channel, Jarrod. :)

I never did put out that video. I bought a heavy duty slider online and the door was custom built by me. It’s mounted to the floor above that I over hung from the upper loft. I knew I was getting trip so that 6” maple trim covers all the sliding hardware

With all that you put into that tiny house, curious why are you selling it now? What's next for you if you sell the THOW?
@TocciTours
@TocciTours 2 місяці тому
Fair question and I’m not sure writing it in a comment will be enough. It’s no surprise I enjoy the process of building a lot more. The last few years all I could think about with escaping into the woods and relaxing. That old saying ‘be careful what you wish for’ because I accomplished that and then asked myself what now. I turned 40 last year and thought I had enough. After being out here for a while I realized a lot about myself. I can only speak for myself as we are all different, but I do miss the city lifestyle. I asked myself would I rather live in a city and escape to woods when needed, or live in the woods and escape to the city. Personally I did what was best for me mentally. That all said, I would have been really upset with myself if I never tried these things. I needed to move back to the east coast to have that feeling, needed to live in a tiny home in the woods to have that feeling. I now have a much better feeling what makes me happy and that’s is what matters. Don’t worry, I have all intention to do way more van stuff, tiny home things, building, designing! Nothing will change for any of my viewers :) just the scenery
@TocciTours
@TocciTours 2 місяці тому
You also asked what’s next and I didn’t answer. Tentatively I have a collab van build happening with Sandy Vans. I intend to bring that van to at least 10 shows this summer, hoping for 20 shows. If it sells then I’ll be living out of that van! If it doesn’t sell then I’ll move the tiny to a tiny house village in the SoCal area. After the summer I plan on staying on the west coast and haven’t decided on what city yet. I have some other exciting things in the works regarding Vanlife and traveling. I eventually want to get back into building smaller items too. All depends where I end up

It is so irritating when a spray foam installers does not fill each bay of a wall or floor completely so that it must be trimmed flush with the surface of the studs for maximum R-value and sound deadening. Did you research building the tiny house using Structural Insulating Panels (SIP)? There is no thermal bridging as there is with steel studs. SIPs come from the world of composites, composite panels have a core material of foam, bamboo, Nomex honeycomb core, etc and then a skin on either side of carbon fiber, fiberglass, Kevlar, aramid, etc which makes for panels that are ultra strong, lightweight, and ultra stiff. The construction world took this same technology and created SIPs which have 3/8", 1/2", or 3/4" plywood or OSB skins epoxied to a very thick foam core of 4", 6", 8" or more depending on the R-value a customer desires, I have seen SIPs with 12" foam cores which leads to spending little on the back end for heating and cooling costs. The great attribute of SIPs is there is ZERO thermal bridging, the panels act as wall studs they are very strong, very stiff, and ultra insulating. Did you have a standard radiant floor heating system priced from a regular home HVAC contractor, from what I heard the the van radiant floor system is ridiculously expensive.
