She really said that this dude assaulted her. Mind you for people who don't know assault means that your actions resonable and put her in fear for her life. So if someone was to swing a baseball bat at you and miss, that's considered assault. She really called the police and gave them a false report

I think this lady entirely brought it upon herself for being an ass, but playing devil's advocate, if you walked up and told someone to give the dead your regards with no context, I suppose it's not entirely unreasonable for that to be interpreted as a veiled death threat or a roundabout mobster-style way of telling them you're going to kill them?

Maybe she thought the dad's ashes would come back to life and suffocate her 💀

@@user-ji7ue3ue5w With NO context? Sure, but there was context, he told her his dad was dead, she demanded to speak to his dad, so he brought his dad so she could talk to him and asked she pass along a message. No reasonable person would ever consider that to be a threat with that context.

@@jacobbissey9311 That is very true. But then again, the OP of the story wouldn't have been in their situation to begin with if the lady or anyone answering the phone had even a basic ability to understand the context that the account holder is dead, so I'm actually thinking now that them reacting like it was a death threat out of the blue actually sounds strangely consistent ...

@@user-ji7ue3ue5w I feel like the context of a sack of ashes and a death certificate being dropped on the desk is sufficiently self evident, "the person you are asking to speak to is dead, here's the proof, if you do manage to speak to them please pass along this message". If she didn't understand or believe he was dead, then asking her to pass that message could in no way be construed as a death threat, if she understood that he was dead, then she has sufficient grasp of the context to understand the situation and thus no reason to interpret the message as a death threat. I think she was interpreting him dropping the bag of ashes on her desk as a physical attack. I've had instances where I used a bit more force than necessary for the sake of emphasis but there was clearly zero chance of hurting ANYBODY but still had people interpret it as an attack or threat. When I was in elementary school, sometimes when I'd be upset I'd throw my desk, just knock it over, I *always" made sure nobody was in the path of the desk, so there was no chance of anybody ever getting hurt, but people still reacted as though I was risking hurting somebody or even actively *trying* to hurt somebody, when nobody was in any physical danger from the desk. I think that's what happened, he dropped the bag of ashes on the desk with enough force to make her feel threatened, no matter how irrational that might be. Still takes an especially stupid person to call the cops in that context, but it makes more sense as the impetus for the call than interpreting his words as some kind of weird, mafia-esque death threat.

The depressing part is that this is surprisingly common. I understand the meeting and death certificate, but after that point you should just do as the person says. And so many people refused to.

My grandma actually had the opposite issue. My grandfather died and when my mom was calling and helping my grandma with some of her bills and such, One of the people she spoke to said oh and I'm so sorry to hear about the death of your mother. It took my mom 2 to 3 months to clear up the fact that my grandmother was in fact not dead and it was just my grandfather

One of my deceased friends, (RIP Norm,) received a phone bill for $2.38 because he never used his phone. This was a while ago, as in 15 years and it was a landline. Plus Norm used his mobile, 99% of the time. So in other words, they wasted more money than they would receive in payment, just sending out the bill. When Norm pointed this out, they talked about the bottom line and how it needed paying. Like okay? You want to loose money? Since when? Nowadays that same phone company is so insistent on prompt payment that they slow down your service if you’re even a few days late in making payment

This reminds me when we split the powerline meter separated from my great grandma's house since it is relatively close to my parents house. Despite my mom have it the certificate, and a bank statement that the account is not longer operative due of my great grandma passing, they insist to had someone close to her mediating it, despite my mother did it for OVER 2 DECADES, and my grandma (her mom) is on disability and refuse to sign over it since she didn't want to leave the house (she doesn't live there but 4 streets away). It escalate to the point their lawyer had to mediate to show that my mother act as Power of Attorney in behalf of my Great Grandma and the supervisor had to suck it up and allow my mother to sign all the paperwork in my Great Grandmother's name to transfer that ownership, all due the special circumstances.
