After his impressive showing on Sorted, I decided to let Moe at Petrolwerks build my 1995 Supra. We ended up under a time crunch trying to get the car to Las Vegas to film the Banging Gears show, so he decided to send the engine out to be built by a local engine builder. After the first engine locked up before filming even began, the builder agreed to warranty the motor. After the second motor locked up, (which he also agreed to warranty) we obviously didn't feel comfortable trying our luck a 3rd time. So now we tear down the engine to see just what failed before building the 3rd engine in-house at petrolwerks.com/

@@superspeeders Think it was a rotating assembly balance issue? The middle main cap is intact and maybe crank was noodling on both ends cracking the other caps and losing oil pressure once main clearance was lost. I'm not familiar with 2JZ at all so not sure how their oiling system works but that theory came to mind.

I'm not sure if I've ever even heard of broken main caps before. Even when stuff ejects out the side of the block, it's usually a rod that lets go. At some point, it's like eating an entire wheel of cheese. 😂

i would assume those cracks on your main caps are from a misguided assembly. i doubt the tune is what damaged your engine and i’d assume that your bearing got washed from being a few thousands too tight.

You did the right thing twice, Rob. It was good of you to allow the builder a 2nd chance to make the first engine build right but to f-up the second one….. I wouldn’t trust them either. I hope they refund your money. If you don’t have a new engine builder yet, I want to recommend Sarah-N-Tuned. She lives a distance from you, in Arizona, but damn she’s good. She’s a fellow UKpostsr and I think you actually know her. It seems like she’s helped you with something in the past. Her attention to detail is 2nd to none and she takes a whole lot of pride in her work. She could build you a damn good engine, it’ll give her content, she’s great with Toyotas, and you’ll get a great, dependable engine out of it. You should definitely reach out to her. I really hope the original engine builder has enough pride to refund your money since both engines failed. Good luck Rob.

Petrolwerks is legit!!! They helped me out when I installed my T56. My hydraulic release bearing was gapped too much and they dialed it right in. After my block is built im bringing it down to have them look it over before tuning! Hopefully this build holds up! Best of luck

I have built many performance engines has a hobbyist. The machinists that knew how to do precision work started retiring about 15 years ago. Luckily I know one of the best stock car racing engine builders in the area. I will call him to find out who he's using to do the machine work. I noticed the block you're going to use has billet main caps compared to the engine that blew up. I didn't hear an explanation of why it did blow up. Probably should have pulled a main cap to see if you spun a bearing. Maybe they got the tolerance wrong on the bearing and they were locking up and that's why you weren't making any power.

It was a salt water flood car that even before Sandy seemed to be in parts for years. As much as I hate to see a car junked, I think that is the right thing to do with the Evo. How are all your cars from your flood doing? Were you able to get them all cleaned out and rebuilt?

I've been through this same kind of thing unfortunately, in a really messed up way it's sobering to know other people have to deal with janky shops too.

No doubt, and hey there's no kill like overkill but that is way, way overkill for the type of power he's looking at making. Factory casting block and crank with just piston rods and of course headwork will be fine. I even doubt the need for billet caps like was mentioned in the video but it's his choice ultimately.

Rushed? It's been over a year. The I've got hundreds of thousands of dollars into building my supras and Corvette by professional companies. How is that cutting corners? Maybe the lesson is don't modify cars and try and use them for more than shooting flames in parking lots and driving on a 1/4 mile.

Why do people refuse to call out bad mechanics/builders etc? All that does is allow others to be victims. You can legally, without fear of reprisal, say the name of someone who did a bad job for you. Then allow us to take a mental tally of how many people say they had a bad experience with them, then choose to avoid or not.

Oh wow. An engine "builder" who never even checked the shell clearances? 😂 This is precisely why we have different (usually colour coded!) sizes of bearing. Please let someone build one who can actually build one and not just assemble it. This is the difference between a mechanic and a fitter.
