Roger Federer is known for his cool, calm, and collected demeanour. However, his '19 Shanghai Masters campaign brought out his inner frustrations, particularly towards umpire Nacho Forcadell. Federer becomes irate and contests the unsportsmanlike code violations he receives throughout the match.

You’re right to a point. Federer was leading by a set and it was in the second set tie break with the Swiss trailing. Del Potro held on to claim the second set tie break 7-5, but Federer hit back to take the third set 6-4 and was 6-5 up in the fourth. So your narrative is wide of the mark, albeit you could potentially argue Federer could have won in straight sets (by winning the second set tie break), had he not been frustrated by the Argentine taking extra long to successfully challenge.

ATP rulebook: "Players shall not violently, dangerously or with anger hit, kick or throw a tennis ball while on the grounds of the tournament site except in the reasonable pursuit of a point during a match (including warm-up). For purposes of this rule, abuse of balls is defined as intentionally or recklessly hitting a ball out of the enclosure of the court, hitting a ball dangerously or recklessly within the court or hitting a ball with disregard of the consequences". While in this case it's kinda debatable it's a pointless argument (particularly about the path of the ball) in my view and Roger isn't right. It's a ball clearly hit out of anger and most probably landing outside of the stadium, in the grandstands or in a corridor (as in this case) difficult to fetch it and bring it back to keep the set of balls in place. That's the reason why I agree with Novak's default at the US Open. And Nacho is apologising to Roger something useful to measure the double standards of tennis umpires towards top players which some players have rightly complained about.
@thebigsquirrel50
@thebigsquirrel50 2 роки тому
Hard to argue when the rule literally states what is supposed to happen. Problem is this: fans just can't see the rules for what they are. Their man simply "can't do wrong." While the speed of this "angry hit" is less than 99% of all other ball abuse point penalties, the umpire was right. It doesn't matter that it is Roger Federer. And, since you mentioned it, although Novak's strike towards the umpire was less speed than probably 100% of all other defaults, it's still correct. It doesn't matter that it is Novak Djokovic. Obviously in short, I agree with you 100%.

@guillerpuebla
@guillerpuebla 2 роки тому
@@balmorrablue3130 06:15 bro. The ball didn't even bounce inside the court first, did you watch it? @thebigsquirrel50
@thebigsquirrel50 2 роки тому
@@balmorrablue3130 You still missed the point. It doesn't matter about past behavior or code violations. I think Fed’s anger here is caused by a mixture of him losing here, as well as the fallout from that heartbreaking defeat at Wimbledon earlier in the year. He didn’t show it at Wimbledon, but anybody, even Federer, would have been furious they didn’t win that match.
@pauljohnson6019

He should have showed some emotion after blowing 2mp- rather than bottling it up- yes this probably was a reaction of that losing, which haunted him, and it all got a bit too much for him, personally, I would be more mad at Wimbledon as that was a Grand Slam, this is just an atp event.

Don't think he was making excuses - he clearly mentioned that he was missing shots, and the argument about the ball change was about standing around looking like a fool rather than a dispute about points. He was losing and frustration got the better of him, but I don't think he was making excuses about losing - just looking to vent. He is past it and Zverev is a top player - it is kind of exceptional that these old guys can even live with this crop of top young players.

@@jim_vinyltap Not really, the OP's point was pretty bad. Federer was stating a very specific grievance that he has with umpires, that they say that they will remind him 1 game before new balls but they don't end up doing that, which is a very reasonable issue to bring up. That's not something that stops somebody from becoming world no. 1 though so idk what Victor was trying to say.

He is not a Karen for not wanting to lose points for small misbehaviours. Judges are too full of themselves and the rules in tennis are way too strict.It's the same reason the audience can't cheer like in every other sport in the world. Because the rules are written by some conservative, elitist old men who don't want athletes or people to ever express themselves. Thinking that the things that they like are special, and they like tennis. So tennis must be special, and they think becoming more like other sports would ruin it.
