This video reviews the Garmin Edge 1030 cycling computer, which I've been using for 3 months. I do a little bit of comparison with the Edge 520.

Another great video, thanks, I recently bought the very new edge explore, it has nearly the same size touchscreen and is less than half the price of the 1030, it's missing some functions for training, but for navigation it's great, it's well worth a look, but if mountain biking use a front mount, just turn it around and have it mount backwards over the stem, not sticking out in front of the stem

Hey Clint, your video is far better than any of the official Garmin videos, or anyone elses for that matter... I got the 1030 and have been having some issues with getting routes/courses sent to it from Garmin Connect on my iphone. The fact you did it so easy makes me think I have an issue... my 520 works fine, Connect keeps saying my 1030 is 'not compatible' with the courses. Annoying, but hopefully I'll sort it.

SUBSCRIBED!!! Best review yet on this garmin device I'm coming from a garmin 510 And same thing like you my battery life is kind of wonky.. So I'm finally upgrading to the garmin 1030. I'm mainly a road cyclist yes. But sometimes I do endurance rides or or endurance challenges like like a double century or the infamous triple century (attempt only). And I need the extra battery life be life. It's great to finally get a review from a real cyclist who uses it for similar purposes. Anyway great review view and this guy subscribed for sure. Clint Clint keep up the good work man . Ride on!

Im hoping to get a 520 soon! My average ride time is about 2 hours and max 6, so for me the 520 is great! Though the 1030 looks amazing to use!

Yes, nice big display but that large screen also catches beads of perspiration easily when standing on long hot climbs when the device is mounted on the out front or bar mount. These beads seem to drive the device a little wacky going between data (and other) screens on its own . This is regardless of adjusting screen sensitivity and / or putting auto scroll on "Off". Other than that, best Garmin device to date IMHO. Appreciate the review!

The "handlebar" mount is more stable if you attach it to the stem, but I see that your MTB stem is too short for that.

Strava users are well served to use the Strava Route widget. It works most of the time, but I find that it can take a few minutes or longer to download. Do so before your riding buddies roll up and what to go making you scramble or make people wait. If it’s a critical route, I’ll download it directly into the 1030 so that it’s in memory and not a download.

There are times that my 1030 seems to drop a connected device, like a HR monitor. If that happens, it’ll sometimes pick back up, but more commonly I’ll pause, go the settings and force a reconnection. It’s not very often, but it certainly has happened more than a handful of times.

Thanks. I do need to do that. But I really like the huge battery of a 1030. I noticed that the more sensors you have connected the faster the battery drains. Long gravel rides with a power meter equal decrease battery!
@dpstrial

I have the Garmin 1000. You have to use the maps sparingly, as it depletes the battery quite noticeably. I used to have the 800, which came with the wonderful UK OS maps at a really good discounted price. The standard maps on the 1000 are OK but adding the OS maps to the unit is somewhat expensive. I have just bought some PowerTap P1 pedals for my spinning bike. The Garmin shows left-right balance plus some other useful pedalling metrics. My Garmin head units have never given me any problems.

@dpstrial

@@sven-erikolsson299 I do have a map on my Edge 1000, which is fine for general navigation but does not compete with plotting a route on the hoof on a paper map. Also, sometimes I am in the saddle for 6 hours or more and the battery dies. I used to have an 800 loaded with a Ordnance Survey (UK) map - my preferred map - but I do not have that on my 1000, which I bought to connect to my Garmin Varia. The paper maps I carry are Ordnance Survey ones - the best in my opinion.
@ultracyklist
@ultracyklist 5 років тому
@@dpstrial Well battery mileage seems to vary. My 1000 is replaced, because the power on/off button disintegrated during a long ride (800K). Garmin replaced it with a 1030. But I had no problem getting 8 to 10 hours, and I ride with power meter/s (Power2Max or P1 double). Using paper maps on rainy night rides was not really to my liking. RWGPS in flight mode provided a working solution/backup to the Garmin. I ride a lot of events where the organiser provides a mandatory track and a GPS link to a file.

I wish I could buy a protective 'cage' for my 1030 that mounted to the handlebars of my MTB and protected the unit in case of a fall. I can imagine a case that is unobtrusive and would protect the unit from most crashes. I've jimmy rigged something that will help for now but its far from perfect.

When you already use a cellphone, why no smartwatch with google os, strava app can be used and navigation with google maps is so much better than garmin edge models. Also music can be played and running with a edge, no. So after using a couple of years using a edge I think i switch to a polar m600 (bluetooth) or a other google os smartwatch (ticwatch), but when you want to put only data in the device and not consume data a edge is a good ant+ solution.

There is a big issue with the Edge 1030 and 820. After more than 100 ours of use you will notice a blue halo around the display which will grow over the time. Garmin will replace your unit, but I believe that this is a general problem and there will be no 820 or 1030 without this problem. Check your unit after 100 or 200 hours of use and you will see the blue halo. If you have no blue halo after more than 200 ours of use - let me know.

I can move through the menus a lot faster with the touch screen. My Edge 510 was a touch screen than the 520 was a button menu. I prefered the touch screen even of the 510 over the 520. Not a huge difference but definitely a preference.

For mountain biking this is the mount that works best. See the picture. I use it with the Edge 1030, it places over the Stem so it is rather well protected when you crash. It is very adjustable for any stem angle and lenght. buy.garmin.com/en-US/US/p/596570?_ga=2.205311312.158066456.1536010114-1798620648.1426172608

I was wondering why people spend such exorbitant amounts of money for what I conceived to be just a route planner - especially because there are several very good and either free or very cheap smartphone apps for that purpose. I had no idea that this includes powermeter readouts and all the other additional bells and whistles. For me, tho, the smartphone using my komoot app is more than enough for the forseeable future. I *kinda* get it, tho...kinda.
@ClintGibbs
@ClintGibbs 5 років тому
The thing about a smartphone is if you leave it on your handlebars and leave the display on to follow a route (or use a power meter or heart rate monitor) on a long ride you will run out of battery within a couple hours. I used the 1030 at the Marmotte alpes where I was on the bike for 9.5 hours.
@CaptainShiny5000
@CaptainShiny5000 5 років тому
Yes, the battery arguement is a sound one however the price difference is so massive that this alone wouldn't convince me to buy a garmin. For a really long ride I'd rather concider a battery pack. For some events a hub dynamo might also be a worthwhile upgrade with a few pros and cons and the price/performance of that obviously depends on the cost of the front wheel. Next week I get a new (ip68 waterproof) smartphone - it's very middle class-ish one and those usually have more battery life than the extra thin + extra fast thus less battery life blessed high-end smartphones. First thing I gonna try will obviously be using it as a bike navi - it'll be interesting to see how long it'll last without a battery pack.

My iPhone X display is very hard to read in bright sunlight. Garmin Edge I can see easily in all light conditions. I like that I can see every kind of data on my Garmin Edge including Shimano Di2 metrics.
@CaptainShiny5000
@CaptainShiny5000 5 років тому
I also want to mention that there are Smartphones like the Cat S41 or the Cyrus CS24 which are specifically designed for outdoor use with batteries with up to 5000 mAh batteries, extra bright displays and other outdoor specific features. Those are still about 100€ to several hundret Euros cheaper than the Edge 1030. While I still see an advantage in size and mounting for the Garmin or the DI2 integration I think a smartphone is a very usable alternative at the very least if you concider outdoor phones or battery packs and, well, the cost.
@ClintGibbs
@ClintGibbs 5 років тому
It’s just going to depend what you want out of it. If you are using it to follow courses, do intervals with power and heart rate feedback, view in bright sunlight, get 20 hours of battery life, then it’s going to be hard to find a substitute. But if you’re just trying to follow courses then yes you probably could use a phone if you don’t leave the display on all the time.

My last Garmin purchase, an Edge 1000, is laying at the bottom of a small lake after being told by Garmin they would give me $50 for its return (in credit toward another purchase of course) due to a faulty waterproof cover design over the power switch. The same POS design they are using on the 1030. They take it back, refurbish it, and re-sell it online for $300 and expect to do the same with all their future models. What better way to sell more of this crap then to design them to fail and be unusable after a years use. Taking them back and selling them again is just the big fucking sociopathic cherry on top. Garmin fucking customers over ever since they realized they could, what a great business model. American business thinking... snap the case together, apply a manufactured in America sticker and sell products and materials made in China. When money and stockholder are involved there is no integrity or honesty in business and Garmin proves that. Depend on gullible customers, take their money, disregard all negative issues associated with their products and find new ways to make their toys die quickly.
@brianbassett4379
@brianbassett4379 5 років тому
@@eddiesmith9836 Yeah, they got tired of sending out referb'ed units to replace all the old poorly designed models when they should have just recalled them all. Today's business model I guess, produce a POS and correct only what you have to under threat of customers turning to a better vendor.

I've just googled battery replacement and found the external battery pack ..... £112.81 when you could buy a power bank for £10 that'll last as long but they don't provide a USB to plug it in .... I wonder why ... they're taking the fucking piss!!!! You also mention that you had the 520 previously and the battery died ... a replacement battery would be about £10 but it's designed so you can't easily get and fit one of those so they're forcing you to upgrade as anyone with the most basic level of common sense knows these batteries will only last a couple of years. I guess you're probably sponsored by them as if you had a modicum of intelligence you'd be saying how shit it was you couldn't buy a replacement battery for your old unit at a reasonable price ... use your phone instead it's a much cheaper alternative and even if you have an iphone it's only £60 for a battery replacement which will give you another couple of years as opposed to the £499 these jokers want for one of these with a very limited battery lifespan. Change the "Take people for as much money as they can" principle and maybe it's a half decent unit but not when you're simply targeted as increasing their corporate profits.
