Zach's drawing a parallel to art is very pertinent. I'm not a painter, but in my line of trade it's just as expected that you put your actual name on your works. I'm a composer. Yet even so, the first time I signed a work of mine with my actual name it felt horrible and selfish and wrong. Boy, did it feel wrong. So if that's the main (or maybe indeed only) thing that's holding you back, I can totally relate. And the best piece of advice I can give from personal experience is: just start doing it. And then just continue doing it. In the long run, you'll be thanking yourself that you did. And in the short run, the most worstest thing that can possibly happen is that nobody will notice or care. Remember, nobody cares about your name as much as you do. To them it's just a label. To them it's of no consequence whether the title screen of your game, or the title page of your symphony, or the cover of your book says "Zach Gage" or "Dog House, Ltd". It does not matter. But if it doesn't matter, then just go ahead and make it _not_ say "Dog House, Ltd". Make it say "Zach Gage" alright. Seeing your name in plain text anywhere is always strange the first couple times. Or the first hundred times. That's normal. But you cannot get used to something that you never do. You can only get used to something that you keep doing. So start today. Godspeed. (Again, I am talking purely about the shyness side of things here. You can have a ton of other factors at play, as is well covered by the video above. But if anything that's one reason _less_ to add your shyness to the pile of concerns you have to juggle.)
@Zekromaster
@Zekromaster 3 роки тому
I honestly prefer signing everything as "Zekromaster" instead of using my actual name. But associating "Zekromaster" and my real name is so easy that Zekromaster is functionally my real name. To me it's a matter of chosen vs given identity. I did not choose my real name, but I chose Zekromaster. It's been my identity online since before I did any creative work I considered worth signing.

Yes... And it would be great if there was also a simple way to create a more meaningful personal interaction with the individual creators (without bothering them): from a simple link to their webpage or a "Like" button, to "developer comments" tracks that play during the game or a way to find other games they have been/are working on.

Very enlightening talk! Seeing that signed art piece from Gage brings me back to another time... During my college years, every single one of my art professors and their assistants were vehemently against signing works. When turning work in, you were expected to sign your name on a separate piece of paper and clip it to the work. For the students who did sign their name directly on their work, the teachers would rip their pieces apart in front of the class. I know they were probably just drunk on the idea of 'art should speak for itself' and it can be valid, but it's refreshing to hear the point of view in this talk and feel like I'm not insane.

Fellow art student, that sounds horrific. I can understand it from a point of not wanting to associate bad work with your name but as an emerging artist progress in itself is valuable, and work is never made in a vacuum. Going as far as to destroy a work or yell at a future artist is disgusting.

I think a lot of the antagonistic communication comes from frustration with the increasing feeling of hostility from the games scene. As a "consumer" or a fan of games I increasingly feel as though I am being treated less like a person by the developer and more like an ATM machine. I personally try to remember that there are people behind the big corporations and that not all companies are the same and generally try to think carefully about how I am communicating to anyone no matter my level of frustration, I can also understand how someone would conflate the "games industry" into one monolith and let their frustration with the exploitative monolithic companies taint their perception of the 6 guys in their basement just doing their best.
@AZ-qw1kz
@AZ-qw1kz 5 років тому
Most of the criticisms regarding games treating players like ATM machines should be directed towards the business part of that company. The publishers, marketers, the CEOs who have to please shareholders who have no interest in games. The actual developers usually have no say or control over the business aspect of things, especially in a large company. But like Bennett and Zach mentioned in the talk, the entire game is released under the company brand, so it's easy to just think of the entire company as one entity that's doing everything, but really there's hundreds and hundreds of people, and a lot of the developers probably disagree with the business practices of the company, such as micro transactions or loot boxes, but they can't say anything publicly or they'll lose their job. I think it's important to humanize the people making the games. There's a tendacity to think it a giant, faceless money machine. But I think these criticisms are more about the nature of corporations in general.
@kinokochan
@kinokochan 5 років тому
I've worked for some of the big faceless game companies you're talking about, and as the commenter above me said, it's an entire machine with hundreds of people involved. Publishing and marketing are a big part of it, as are CEOs, but really, a thousand different decisions pass through a hundred different hands. At the end of the day, we on the development side really do try our best to advocate for a good player experience. Some battles we win, some we lose, but if we don't work together as a team and make compromises, we don't ship the game at all, it's as simple as that. And some consensus has to be made on the monetization side at large companies, otherwise we can't justify earning a living wage to the people who pay us. Trust me, with how bad job security is, nobody gets into the dev side of games to make a ton of money. We do it out of passion, because we want to make good, worthy games.

When a young video game team made a game about a the high seas, they wanted to convey what it was about but also not use a generic name. So the main designer stepped up and attached his name to that 1987 pirate simulation, naming it "Sid Meier's Pirates!" Although Meier later explained it was because the game departed so much from Microprose's earlier titles, he did it again later, making it a company staple starting with "Sid Meier's Covert Ops" and "Sid Meier's Railroad Tycoon". And yet, "Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri" has Brian Reynolds known more for it. But the time of the "video game heroes" is over. There isn't that cult of personality anymore except for very few masters like Hideo Kojima, Shigeru Miyamoto, etc. Recently, an Easter Egg was discovered that might be the very first appearance of credits in a video game. You had to do something so obscure it took over 40 years to figure out, but it is older than Adventure for the Atari 2600. I think oddheader covered it in one of his videos, but it didn't gain much traction yet.

I think a lot of people that specifically play indie games are playing them for the very reasons discussed in this video, the term they usually use is "soul". Games from back in the day had more soul, games from indie dev's have way more soul than big triple A games. Why? The usual agreement is because in the past games had much smaller teams, indie games are done by a small group of people or even an individual, so the game tends to have an idea that shows throughout the entire experience. The soul is there because it's not just separate groups of 30 people all doing their task given to them from the top filling a checklist that sells well. Anyway, my point being, many consumers already understand why they love indie games and in my opinion, this talk exemplifies exactly what consumers are looking for when they play smaller games. The Soul, the human piece of the art, adding your name to the game or even going beyond that really helps this. A few examples of both triple A games and indie games: Metal Gear Solid? Kojima Super Smash Bros? Sakurai Getting over it? Bennet Foddy Undertale? Toby Foxx No Man's Sky? Sean Murray(this one was most likely accidental at the time, he just had the burden of needing to promote his indie game that turned triple A due to hype) Halflife? Steam? Valve? Lord Gaben, Gabe Newell Elder Scrolls? Bethesda? Tom Howard I don't just remember the game, I remember the creator behind it, it works.

yeah i can relate to that. I took a speech class in school and we actually did a small thing on how commercials/companies use certain things to change how you feel (for better or worse) so stuff like this doesn't surprise me much. It also helps that we get a lot of context. a lot of the more corporate things out there are left short and vague as a "please everyone" kind of thing. Not everyone can relate to being a faceless game dev, but everyone probably relates to feeling loved, or wanting a certain type of attention, so latching into basic emotions is very important for groups like that. Where this fills more of a niche (games or even art) BUT it does a better job at explaining a more specific emotion and situation, and having more talks like this would honestly be a cool thing to see happen. and yeah i kind of noticed that knee-jerk reaction too. I'm always so skeptical now.

Just be realistic guys, nobody wants to put his name out there and feed it to a toxic gaming community just to be doxed or harassed because you didn't add a fluorescent pink skin in your game...

It's baffling that he didn't even mentioned that, I guees it's pretty easy to encourage developers to put their name on a game when you have two succesful hits under your belt. The gaming community is harsh to say the least, if your game is "bad" gamers will bully you till they'll find something else to prey upon.

Something interesting. I tried out being personal with people who view or play my games, one... hater expressed his discontent with my content. I apologized, and so did he. Basically he said something like "it ruins the subreddit" or something like that, and some other guy defended me. He apologized after that, this video came back to mind as when I replied I thought of "I need to be personal so his irrationality can calm down"... kinda worked. For the context, i post devlogs in a subreddit, some guy say it ruins the subreddit, I apologized, another guy defended me, and the guy who complained tried to tone down his complaint while apologizing.

I have a cool example of unfairness in games - so in overwatch there's a 1v1 mode that picks a random hero both players use in a mirrored duel. I had a friend who wanted to play with me, but there was a skill gap between us. Sooooo I tweaked the mode so the duel wasn't mirrored. The game has some really one-sided match-ups - so it was fun for me to get Winston versus Bastion and laugh/cry about it.

On one hand yeah, makes sense, on the other hand, if we take the film industry, for example, very few directors put their name directly in the title of their movies, and it always comes off as very arrogant, pretentious and, yes, egocentric.
@MacSmithVideo

It's ridiculous to think it's pretentious for artists to put their names on their work. People are just too neurotic and conditioned to give their credit away.

@@MacSmithVideoPutting name on your work is one thing (that's what title sequences are for), essentially _naming_ your work after yourself is a wholly different thing. I really love the message of the talk, especially coming from a TV/movie production background. But as a woman of color, the audience question about personal safety and potential backlash is definitely a sobering consideration. It's natural - and necessary for career growth - to want to put your name on your work, but it seems grossly unfair that the toxic outliers of our community make many of us hesitate to do so.
