For 40 years when I'd be asked who was my favorite actor within 1 second I have always said Gene Hackman. A legend.

This guy was an absolutely phenomenal talent. There were always many people around the world who knew he was great, but in recent years it's become apparent that he may well be the greatest of them all

He started out playing bad guys, or unlikeable good guys, so often that I grew up hating him, until I realised how good he was at his characters to make me feel that way about him. When he retired, it was like a death in the family. I was genuinely upset to the point that I lost sleep over it. We grow and change as people. I grew up with Gene Hackman as a part of my landscape, not properly appreciated until he was gone from it.

The title is misleading. This interview wasn't about the great movie "Hoosiers".

He’s as good as anybody. Ever. Even in throwaway/paycheck films like The Replacements, it was impossible to take your eyes off of him when he was onscreen. The way he could just slide into virtually any role. He was brilliant. BTW: why would people think he couldn’t do comedy? Young Frankenstein, Superman: The Movie, The Birdcage. My goodness!! How should we describe Gene Hackman? Well….LEGEND would be a good start.

I completely agree with Gene Hackman. As a performer it becomes more difficult as time goes on, but also when you're on the money, there's a great sense of satisfaction.....aim high! (I'm 60)

He stayed in character coaches pressure players to perform yet they expect relaxation and concentration 😢 under pressure he just turned the feelings on the writer director. Sort of what players sometimes do to coaches . Transference. Sport is largely channeling emotion in a different direction.

I was surprised by the situation where he had the practice of checking the chambers of guns when gun play happened in scenes he was involved. Gene Hackman is a Marine and I am sure he may have been through many inspections where he was required to check weapons to ensure they were not loaded. Interesting.

One of the last great actors of the studio era. Now you've got these cheap Neflix Amazon shlock pieces of crap. Glad I came along when I did. So many great films I got to see relevant to the times.

He was one of my favorite actors until I heard about how he acted on the set of Hoosiers. every day he was miserable and was mean and nasty to the Director for no reason. He was mean to the writer as well. Matter of fact David Anspaugh, Director, and Angelo Pizzo ,writer, referred to him as the black cloud because he made their life completely miserable throughout the whole movie. The Director was on the verge of A nervous breakdown solely because of how he was being treated by gene Hackman.

new anniversary podcast on Hoosiers with Bill Simmons. word on the street is that Hackman was a total d..,k on set and thought the movie would fail. obviously that must have changed after it was released, but he was a miserable tyrant during production.

"Word on the Street.....thats solid" Christopher Walken from Suicide Kings. I can totally see him being a d on the set because the vast majority of them are. We are disillusioned sometimes that we actually know these people by the characters they play.....we get to know who they are on the screen. One that you wouldnt think of as a a$$ on the set is Andy Griffith but from people that I know that had met him on the set and the numerous rumors that confirmed that dude was a major jack a$$. Although Hackmans performance in Hoosiers is one of my favs I would have to say personally Mississippi Burning was his shinning moment. He was a lion in that movie. " Lets get this straight you shit kicker.....youve got your brains in your balls if you think were just going to fade away, we are going to stay here til this things finished........how about you Deputy? Is that gun for show.....or do you get to shoot people with it every now and then? Thanks for the beer"

Well it’s too bad this clip wasn’t about Hoosiers. Hackman was convinced it was the worst movie he had ever been in. He told the studio not to release it…
