phunkracy idk where you got this, friend, but this piece of information is misleading. Steppe had simular traditions almost universally, so even my ancestors were from different part of steppe, I am pretty sure that traditions dictated only siblings inherited wives from brothers, to prevent children being orphen and widows being abondened. Clearly sons don't inherit wives from fathers. I can't see mongol traditions being too different.

It's from Genghis Khan and the making of the Modern World (www.goodreads.com/book/show/93426.Genghis_Khan_and_the_Making_of_the_Modern_World). Interesting POV on the story - Jack Weatherford really seemed to revere the Great Khan. I forget the reason why his older brother would probably marry his mother though.
@TheJackmeisterMongolHistory
@TheJackmeisterMongolHistory 6 років тому
Bekter could have inherited Hoelun as he wasn't her son. He was Yesugei's son with another wife (possibly named Suchigel) and as the eldest he could have. The custom from the Mongols of the time was that they could inherit a father's wives except for his own mother, which was demonstrated a number of times (Chagatai, Ogedai and Tolui all received some of their father's wives after Chinggis' death). Brothers could also inherit their brother's wives, so in this case both of you are correct.

Nomadic tribes had strict hospitality customs, even strangers were supposed to be able to come to your fire and eat safely. Just so happens Yesugei picked to sit down with Tatars who hated him. Possibly due to this, one of the laws put forward by Chinggis Khan was to protect this right and those who violated it were punished with death.

Connor McLernon Probably, generally sounds like a wise policy. But I feel that in this stage of his life, due to his unstable (ish) situation, Temujin would probably accept any help at this point. Plus, the 'grunt soldier' would be loyal to Temujin if he feels that his advice and counsel is accepted and if he does well, will be rewarded based on his merit.

If only they had more opportunities in the past (most of human history) to become great themselves (and those women and girls who did become great were "anonymous" or couldn't share it or practice it). Unfortunately, women make up the majority of PTSD sufferers and are more likely to undergo sustained abuse (and then microagressions that trigger symptoms and lows). 1/3 of women killed in the U.S are killed by a romantic partner. Domestic abuse in police officers' homes is 2-4 TIMES higher (in the U.S) than the average (who are the going to call? The police?). It's all about ego and power. (They say: rape is an act of violence and superiority). In psychology textbooks, rape is the NUMBER ONE most traumatic thing (as a category) that affects the human brain (and development). For some reason, people take others' concern over children's gender role (who is better, who IS people) socialization as an attack against men. This socialization is the main contributor of violence against women and GIRLS (Girls who DON'T report) and the constant undermining of girls through childhood and into adulthood. Any special case where a girl is bratty or a woman is an ass, is for some reason, "evidence" that girls in general aren't being hurt "that much" or enough. It's a constant balancing act that would drive anyone insane and frustrated and... Silent.

Steppe life, tribe and family drama was spot on, but to address a few issues: 1. Yesugei wasn't really a poor hunter but a fearsome lord with the blood of kings, and he deemed Hoelun worthy or marriage 2. Mongolians pretty much engaged children at a young age for them to get to know each other 3. The men who poisoned Yesugei was an enemy tribe named the Tataar and they'd been at odds with each other for a while (I'm only adding what I learnt from my culture and what I read from the Secret history of the Mongols) (I'm Mongolian btw)

Neither Genghis nor Chinggis is closer to the original pronunciation that is Tengis and it means "Sea". Tengis Khan didn't actually mean King of Sea but likened to the idea that king of vastness. If this is meant to be the story of Hoelun, at least the five arrows incident should have been mentioned. It became enshrined in the Yasa after all. Basically, after Temujin killed Bekhter, Hoelun demanded that he break one of his arrows, which he did. Then she told him to tie five arrows together and break them, which he failed to do. Then she told him that the brothers should have been like the five arrows, united and unbreakable, but Temujin had weakened them all by his crime. There was another incident when an elderly Hoelun rushed to Genghis Khan's side after he ordered one of his brothers whipped for insulting a great shaman and bared her breasts, reminding him that the brothers had all nursed from the same teats. Chastised, Genghis called the shaman and his entire family and ordered him before the entire Mongol horde to show his powers by withstanding the whipping already given out to his brother without fainting. When the shaman fainted, Genghis declared him a fraud and executed the entire family. He then instituted a law making the Kaghan the sole ultimate arbiter of religious matters. And thus the Kaghans of the Mongols gained the powers of the pontifex maximus. There's also another story of how Hoelun convinced Genghis to forgive his brother Khasar for protecting the Tatars he wanted to exterminate by asking Borte to adopt a boy who was secretly Tatar and unveiling his true identity just after Genghis had become fond of the boy's brilliance and decided to make him the court chronicler. This prompted Genghis to issue a general amnesty for the Tatars. There are so many things Hoelun did to make the Mongol Empire great that are usually glossed over. We're lucky that Shigiqutuqu, that Tatar boy adopted by Borte, ended up writing the basis for the definitive Secret History, honoring her adopted grandmother's contributions throughout his works. When Genghis found out about Hoelun's passing, he stopped the march of the entire Mongol army and ordered his brothers to return to give her their last respects, then he ritually punished himself lamenting that he had taken away her sons from her side on her deathbed. Probably allowed a heck of a lot of people to move away from the Mongols' path of conquest for a bit and gave respite to a lot of embattled states.

Also, Belgutei was actually the younger brother of Begter, the one who got killed by Temujin and Khasar.

Guys this story seems to have some flaws and I know my ancestors history as I am a true Mongolian descendant. I don't know everything for sure as history is always debatable, but for example I am pretty sure that Belgutei (half brother of Temujin) was not the one who supported the killing of the bully brother (his name is Behter which is Belgutei's true older brother born from same mother called Sochigel).It was actually Khasar (yonger brother of Temujin, second child of Houlen), who was there with Temujin when it happened. Belgutei only witnessed a harsh scene where Temujin kills Behter (his two older brothers senseless fighting). Also I don't think there were three children from Sochigel (only two children called yonger Belgutei and older Behter) nor that Behter was the oldest one, Temujin was the oldest child if I remember correctly. And father Esugei was the tribes leader or chieftain, and so on there are many things that can be fixed or added. Well I don't know what kind of source that this youtuber had, but you have to be very careful when it comes to history source as there are many intended or accidental change of true history passed down many generations and countries some of them are even very biased from national views. However the main things are mostly true here so it is okay. It's just even my name is Belgutei (named after Belgutei of course) and sometimes it is very hard to see many wrong views and flaws about my national history. All I can say is Chinggis (not Ghengis for me) Khan was a great man, warrior, leader...

@@andrewheggarty332 Do you mean the series of books by Conn Igulden? Because they weren't entirely factual. Mongol history is hard to discern because they rarely kept records for anything, especially in the pre-empire days before scholars, priests and merchants travelled there and started recording what they saw. Most things would be passed on as stories.

Muteteli Harvey stories passed down over 700+ years can have historical inaccuracies in them. Say my Great-great-great grandfather fought in the American Revolution(which he did not). I wouldn't automatically know every single thing about the Revolutionary War, like where the last battle was fought, or when France joined in. That requires research.

Surprisingly accurate from a Mongolian guys perspective. Although we are taught that he and his older half brother had a fair bow and arrow duel.
