Perez was on old tyres too. Bottas had all the tools to win that race in front of him, and couldn't deliver.

Yes, Russell had the grippier tyres, but the fact that he pulled this off through a twisty section like this shows skill. No one is hyping Russell up exclusively based off this overtake, it was just an epic and symbolic moment after his amazing performance in the rest of the race.

It was definitely a great and brave move, but the fact that Sainz did the exact same move a few laps later, is ridiculous. He gets no credit for that and has a worse car. Way too overhyped this move

No surprises there. It even got ridiculously voted as the top overtake of the year by Russell fanboys on Twitter, even beating the amazing Gasly overtake on Checo at Eau Rouge. It's barely a top 5 of the season IMO.

kinda true although it deserves some plusses for just how much psychological pressure russell was under to not crash into bottas and to not just sulk after loosing the lead like he did. it was def on of the most epic moments of 2020 on track for me for that reason

@@SoudipanMaity imo moves into Eau Rouge - Raidillon have to be the best of the season. The bravery you need is extraordinary, as it is one of the most dangerous corners in the world. And the fact that Checo almost squeezed him into the wall and he still made the move is just great. I wouldn’t put it in the top 5 as well. Imo there were some other great overtakes this season. It’s definitely a beautiful and hype move when it was done, but now I’ve seen it too often already and it’s nothing special anymore

Russell overtook him a couple of times ya know, early on in the race when this overtake happened their tyres were pretty much the same age.

Crofty also says "It was committed, it was brave, it was brilliant", which sums it up really. He didn't have to overtake there, he could've just stayed behind Bottas around that section then overtaken on the straight, which would've been perfectly fine, but he decided to do it at the most risky point he could have. That shows bravery, skill and composure under pressure

Probably because all the eyes were on George and it had a lot of significance as they are both competing for the seat at mercedes

because Sainz was in his own car and it was more likely that he does those things with a car which is attuned to him. Quite different from George. He jumped into the mercedes at short notice, which didn't even have enough space for his body neither was attuned for him.

The reason Bottas has the seat, is because he’s more the “team player” type while Ricciardo isn’t.

Well yes of course. Valtteri was the established driver at Mercedes, he'd been driving the car all season, and sometimes could stay with Hamilton. He was expected to outperform Russel, so nobody would have been surprised if the roles were reversed. The reason this is so amazing is that George only had two-ish days of experience in the car, and still managed to clearly outperform Bottas.

I guess there's a distinction between 'best' and 'most significant'. This overtake was amazing given it's context, in that we'd seen Russel at the back of the grid for the last 2 years and he was finally getting his shot. Sure, it wasn't the most technical and impressive move taken at face value, but in a few years when George may or may not be winning titles, we'll look back on it as being iconic.

That's exactly what I've been saying out loud since the race itself. Sainz did the exact same move, but no one even mentions it. I like George and tbh every driver on the grid. But this is BS and unfair to Sainz.
