Now, think about this. Gordon is just a regular man in a suit with an arsenal of weapons. technically, he's bottom of the food chain when it comes to Xen and its inhabitants. However in the end the Nihilanth recognizes Gordon by calling him by his last name 'Freeman'. I mean, who else can sit there and say that an omnipotent being has recognized them? What I'm saying is, that Gordon Freeman is pretty much a LEGEND as he should be.

Half-Life 2 and Half-Life Alyx are both extraordinary pieces of work, especially if you pay attention to what's happening around you. Valve are masters of telling the story through the game's environment. Must-play if you enjoy a good sci-fi.

Great play through! I think a few of your questions get answered in Blue Shift and Opposing Force as to what happened with Black Mesa at least. The creepy guy is G-Man. You periodically saw him throughout the game. He isn’t a robot but we aren’t sure he is human either. He works for someone that we don’t know. All we do know is he was ordered to have someone free the boarder world. We at this point don’t know why and we don’t know who he works for.

Glad to see you pulled through to the end, Juliette. This is where the whole world plunges in Gordon's absence with one "job" offer. Not sure if you'll be jumping into the HL1 expansions; Opposing Force and Blue Shift, but they are short yet worthwhile experiences from difference perspectives of the Black Mesa incident. Either way, can't wait to see you jump into HL2, it's a much stronger game in narrative with just the characters and world, even more when you get into Episode 1 and 2. Save Alyx for last since it has spoilers for Episode 2.

Great job getting through Half-Life, this remake is really good and the last levels are just so amazing from the first. I'm sorry if I'm stating something that you might already know but that guy at the end, the G-Man can be seen a few times during the entire game, usually in out of the way places looking at you before wandering off screen and sometimes down dead ends and just be gone adding to his mystery. 43:00 the unique property of the hive hand is that it's main attack does not deal damage to enviroment due to it's homing projectiles. You need to use either alt fire, or different weapon to interact with enviroment that responds to damage. Also, main feat of hive hand is that you can shoot around the corner without leaving cover.

1:17:50 the entire sequence of the elevator having a good song for the entire ride, really tests on the agility of player, it is posible to get trough with mininal damage, this being the last obstacle before the fight with nihilinanth, having alien controllers doing all they can to stop you, the plataform you on giving some cover in some angles and when stopping to kill the shielded alien controllers being challenging as you eat alot of damage if you stay still wich can end up knocking you off the edge in some instances :P And also the fact they teleport in mass as they getting desperate to stop you, including forcing the elevator down when you are the end of it with the music returning in to give the drop when having to kill the last wave of alien controllers

By playing Half Life original, you can respect what the folks with Black Mesa did to honor it, but you can also try to put yourself into 1998 when Half Life came out and imagine what it was in comparison to everything else that was out back then. It was like no other experience before it. Truly mind blowing for its time, even if Xen was terrible back then, lol. I'd say everything prior to Xen holds up to now, but you really did play the Definitive version of what the developers in 1998 wish they could have put together if they had the technology and time that the folks of Black Mesa did.

I can't watch yet, I'm almost to this part though. 1st time doing a parallel playthrough, it's been fun!

Lemme give you a quick summary of what went down in case you missed anything: Gordon Freeman, a young physicist arrives at Black Mesa, a reaserch facility in New Mexico he has been working in for a couple of weeks at that point, upon arrival, the security guard instructs him to put on his HEV suit, a piece of gear designed to protect its user from physical damage, radiation and toxicity and head to Anomalous Material lab, where his colleges, Doctors Isaac Kleiner and Eli Vance need him for some sort of experiment. They notice strangely high radiation readings, but decide to go with the experiment regardless. They tell him to simply put a weird crystal of unknown origin into some energy/radiation beam. This, however results in an incident they later call a resonance cascade which opens a rift into another dimension (which we later find out is called Xen, it's unclear whether it is a native name of that world or the one Black Mesa staff came up with) leading to alien creatures invading the facility. The aliens are killing the Black Mesa staff, and after a while we are informed that the military (the HECU unit) are coming to handle the situation, but when they arrive, instead of rescuing people, they're killing everything and everyone inside to make sure no one ever finds out what really went down here, but thanks to Gordons efforts (and the fact that they're at a full-scale war with the aliens at the same time) they are unsuccessful and soon another faction, an all-female Black Ops squad is sent to take care of them as well. Gordon makes his way through Black Mesa as he was told that the Lambda team prepared a rocket to be lauched that will hopefully close all the portals, but due to HECU interruption, Gordon needs to do it himself. But even after the launch the aliens don't stop coming, if anything, the portals are becoming more deliberate. The HECU seeing that they failed in their mission, decided to abort it and airstrike the place instead. Freeman uses all the chaos to reach the Lambda Facility, where he learns that the scientists already experimented with portals themselves and they have been researching the Xen Aliens. The Lambda guys tell him that a single powerful being has been able to maintain the rift on the Xen side despite it being closed on Earth and that's why the aliens kept coming even after the launch and they ask him to go to Xen and kill it. There, we find out that Black Mesa has been sending expeditions to Xen for a while now and that Vortigaunts who have been attacking us on Earth aren't actually hostile until they are mind controlled by the creatures known as Alien controllers, who enslaved them and forced them to manufacture bio-mechanical soldiers that we have been fighting in Black Mesa (the collars and handcuff-like bracelets on Vortigaunts' necks and limbs should have been a dead giveaway of this). Gordon succeeds in killing the big boss of the alien invasion, the Nihilanth, who has been trying to warn him about a hostile force he's been resisting (that will come into play in HL2). At the end a mysterious figure (who is refered to as G-Man, but that's only his name in the game files, its not acknowledged in the games themselves) congratulates us and tells us that his "employers" have been satisfied with our actions and gives us a job offer we cant refuse. And thats the story of Half-Life/Black Mesa.

Hey Juliette! This blind playthrough was a blast to watch! Have some Brazilian money! After each part I watch, I always looked forward to the next one, I enjoyed your reactions, And I am happy that you enjoyed the game! I still remember a year ago when I recommended you to play black mesa or half-life back in your portal playthrough, this has surely been a journey! Just another thing I forgot to mention about half-life 2 (again!) is that you make sure to set the High dynamic range to full in the options. If you have it set to none, the lighting breaks at a certain part of the game. As I said previously, I will make an explanation of what happened (without spoilers to hl2 of course) ---- The government was giving more funding to black mesa instead of aperture science, so aperture science was always mad at black mesa. As the technology in black mesa was more interesting than aperture science. The scientists of the anomalous materials laboratory in black mesa, were excited to make a test on the purest sample they've seen (the yellow crystal) Its the same crystals you saw in xen, of course Gordon wouldn't know where it came from. The test went wrong after putting the crystal into the anti-mass spectrometer, causing a resonance cascade, an unpredictable portal storm, teleporting various aliens into black mesa. Gordon goes to meet with Eli and Kleiner, and Eli tasks Gordon to go the surface to call for help. Making into the surface Gordon discovers that the military received orders to silence the scientist on the facility. One scientist tells Gordon that he should go to the lambda complex, as the crew in there has a plan to fix the disaster. After a while a security guard tells Gordon that he needs to launch a satellite into orbit, so the lambda team can close the portal. Gordon launches the rocket into space, and after getting captured by soldiers he finds out that the black mesa already knew about the aliens and were studying them in the biodome complex. After reaching the lambda complex Gordon also sees that black mesa already had teleporting technology being developed. Gordon finds the lambda team and they say there is a powerful creature in the border world keeping the portal open still, the rocket closed earth's side of the portal, but the portal was kept open on the other side. Xen is a border world where many dimensions connect, so no creatures in xen are native from there. Also Gordon sees more of black mesa exploring xen. Also vortigaunts don't get angry you for you hurting them, they are being mind controlled and forced to attack you. If you notice the vortigaunts are wearing shackles, they are being enslaved by nihilanth, if you notice their eyes glow red when being mind controlled, just like back on earth. So they are forced to work and forced to fight. Nihilanth keeps telepathically saying stuff to gordon. Like: "Comes another" meaning another human came into xen, "The last I am the last" meaning he is the last one of his kind, and "deceive you, will deceive" he's talking about the briefcase man, "you are man, he is not man, for you he waits, for you" You can kinda guess who he is talking about. In half-life 1 he also says "Their slaves we are, their slaves we are", meaning he is a slave from someone else too. Basically, after the resonance cascade he saw an opportunity of taking earth as a new hiding spot. This may sound like I am spoiling half-life 2, but I am not, this stuff you can theorize without even knowing half-life 2. So after killing nihilanth Gordon gets hired by gman, not his actual name, people call him gman because files related to him is called gman. Hopefully this clears out some questions, and other questions will be answered in Half-Life 2. ----- And thanks again for playing this game, it was a blast watching you go through it, hopefully we can see Half-life 2 soon!.

Seeing you play half-life after black mesa would be great It would be interesting to see your comparisons and reaction to the same parts of each game.

Half Life 2 was meant to have a long intro train-ride with G-man where he explains what's happened in the 20 years since Half Life 1, but that got cut along with a lot of other stuff to get the game out on time. Half Life 2 doesn't do a great job of explaining who the Combine actually are, but it's enough to know that they're something nasty that came through the portals Black Mesa opened and that has enslaved humanity, and that Gordon has been kept in stasis by G-man the whole time and no-one knows what happened to him. When you get to Eli's lab, investigate all the papers on the wall and there's some of the backstory there. In Half Life 1, all the security guards had the same face and voice and were nicknamed 'Barney'. The character Barney in this game is meant to be one of them and has the same voice actor. (His story starts in the Half Life 1 expansion Half Life: Blue Shift so he's kind of a returning character). Similarly, there were only 4 scientist models in Half Life 1 who all had the same voice, which is Kleiner's voice actor. Kleiner and Eli are meant to look like 2 of them, and you'll meet another one later.

For me the spookiest thing about the man in the suit (aka the "G man") is that nobody knows who he is. Sure, there are theories and ideas but.. Nobody knows. I mean he's clearly not human thats pretty obvious in the way he talks, acts and what with his reality warping and time stopping powers and all but nope, nobody knows. And he mentions he has employers too? So there might be people out there even more powerful than him given he's working for them? Now that's scary

Congrats on beating Nihilanth! His boss fight in the original could be just miserable, lol. He'd teleport you into separate rooms where'd you'd have to do more platforming and fight more aliens just to get back to him. And you're exactly right about how unique and inventive Half-Life feels, I thought the same thing when I first played it and the sequel. HL2 very quickly became one of my favourite games of all time when I first played it a few years ago; it never becomes stale and it keeps you on your toes. Will definitely be fun to see you experience that for the first time!

Since you played Black Mesa for the Half-Life 1 experience instead of the original game (not that this is a bad thing at all), I'd highly recommend you find out more about the making and development of this magnificent remake whose idea started back in 2004 when the disastrous Half-Life: Source released and disappointed the players, and only got finished when we got version 1.0 release in 2020! 😀 Also, I'd recommend you play Half-Life 1 expansions: Blue Shift and Opposing Force which have the same story of the Black Mesa incident but with different perspectives!

Now that you’ve completed, I know you were possibly playing the original offline… and I’m not going to make a case for playing it online, ut I do have a recommendation, if you don’t get around to playing the original in your own time, you should at least check out the video series Freeman’s Mind on UKposts. It is a playthrough of the original game, but the person behind it has added an entire story by embodying the character of Gordon Freeman by making the silent protagonist well… not silent. We get to hear his thoughts and trials as he deals with the aftermath of the what happens before, during and after the accident as he struggles to survive… and it’s hilariously done, though quite a bit of cursing so I do add a slight warning as that’s not for everyone, still, it’s hilarious.

I don't know how you haven't noticed by now but, the Vortigaunts are enslaved. They will not harm you of their own accord. As soon as the small flying enemies appear, they force the Vortigaunts to attack you.

I hate that we have to wait until the sequel releases in 2004. I hope my Pentium 3 will be able to run the cutting edge graphics!

Can't wait to watch this final part. I strongly recomend trying the Half-Life expansions. I think you are used to old games and graphics enough to enjoy them. I would also recomend the original game, just so you can see the differences. It will really make the Half Life 2 experience even sweeter.

The factory in this is so much better than the original. Xen isn't fondly remembered compared to the rest of the game lol. I love the G-Man's voice acting. This guy isn't the original, Mike Shapiro, but he does a good job impersonating Mike. The way he stutters, breathes, like he's not used to having vocal cords and lungs (most likely he is some kind of alien, doubful he's a robot haha), he kinda reminds me of Nyarlathotep from Lovecraft, except not as much of an asshole! The beginning of the game mentions that Gordon's sponsor for his employment is classified. The lead writer for Half-Life revealed (out of nowhere lol) in one interview that the G-Man is that sponsor. He's had an interest in Gordon for who knows how long, for who knows what. Xen isn't explained much in the game itself, but the lead writer for the series explained it simple enough. It's a borderworld, it is not a planet but something that lies between dimensions. Nothing in Xen is native to it and through experimenting with teleportation, Black Mesa discovered Xen, and the, let's say refugees, living there, decided to take samples of wildlife, plants, the crystals. Until eventually the Xen crystal at the start of the game blew the whole thing wide open letting the denizens of Xen spill into our universe. There's a line Nihilanth has that I'm sad wasn't included in the game. "their slaves, we are their slaves". It recontextualises the entire invasion, they've actually been running away the entire game. Running away from what? dun dun dunnnn. Very spooky.

Glad you rate this one so highly. I'm not sure if I'd recommend the 'Blue Shift' and 'Opposing Forces' Stand alone expansions. Unlike HL1 they haven't had the 'Black Mesa' rework yet so you'd have to play the original old ones which are fine but understandably inferior to 'Black Mesa'. Whether you do them next or not, DEFINATELY continue with this series, HL2 set a new bar in gaming and introduced us to simulated physics in games. Pixels could interact and feel like they were made of a specific material and had "weight" for the first time (in a way that was good). It was a pretty big deal at the time.

Ah, Juliette.💜 This was a fantastic ending (and like Halo 3, I never played Black Mesa - so doubly enjoyable for me.) 😊 The tension here made for so very many wonderful moments as you, and Gordo, fought your way through to get back on Earth, and you got to meet the Smoking Man's cousin - up close and weirdly personal.😅 In this game, it almost always doesn't matter where you go, because you can always find your way back again. But you traversed the conveyor belts with ease - you did an exceptional job - figuring solutions, and acting upon the knowledge to wend your way to the big boss (who looks a bit like a giant Dalek) where you changed your clothes, donned a lovely white print hairband, faced a terrific battle and destroyed the foul-tempered brat. Well done!🥰 It is always a sight, as you go through the various difficulties, of the games, especially this one, which I suspect is one of the oddest you've ever played, as you have a problem, a failure, and, Always, a little giggle, a "Nevermind...", and back at it! 🥰 Great running commentary - always awesome - "I'll have to go to him. He's a bit shy." "I'm having a Bullet situation... As usual."😂 A favorite of mine - "Can you Not. Please! I've no Interest in You!" - like talking to a rude boy, on the street, who's pestering you to have lunch with him.🤭 When you were frantic about your +2 health - "We'll have a shower together! hahahaha"😂 I've corrected this one a bit, 1:15:15 - "...ew ew ew , oh no, no, no, no! It's got me with its Dung!"😝 As fun as it has been, watching you, so enthusiastically, playing Black Mesa, and doing so well, for a 1st timer, finding things out on your own, a rare quality, these days, it was just as fun for me to watch you play, and see the altered, reinterpreted, and added, bits/pieces compared to the original Half-Life which I have played a few times. Especially in today's video, (actually all of Xen) with the conveyor maze, and the Big Boss battle - so many things recognizable, but so very different - it has been a Blast!😋😍 Play the "Expansions" (heaven forbid you refer to them as DLC), as one does a character intro and the other is different. It seems, in various comments, here and other places on-line, the major problem with the DLC packages is mostly centered around the shocking olden day, lost in the dim annals of time, graphics. There are a number of places online, where comments urge against them as they are "too shocking" to play after seeing Black Mesa. A hilarious pronouncement actually. You'll play them,. You'll have fun, just as you will when you go back and play the OG Half-Life. About the dlcs (third comment oh god) i would love a reaction to oppf (opposing force) as it adds to much and bizarre plot holes you even get to see gordo :) and new aliens... And weapons... (Barnacle gun m249 sniper) And the end is where i want a reaction tho.

At last! If you can be assured of two things about the ending of a Half Life game - The ending will be bonkers and you'll be left wondering if you really did the right thing. You've reached the end, annihilated the Nihilanth and stopped this invasion of Earth from the borderworld. But you've also finally come face to face with the "G-Man," and as he said, that was quite a nasty piece of work Gordon did. Who are his employers? What will this job Gordon has accepted entail? And, perhaps most of all what happens to earth now? Nihilanth is no longer around to keep the portals Black Mesa created between Earth and Xen open, but quite a large amount of aliens still must have come through, and one lone human venturing into the heart of Xen and killing an impossibly powerful psychic warlord is bound to have... unforseen consequences... This playthrough has been a blast! I'd love to see Blue Shift and Opposing Force from you, and I also can't wait to see Half Life 2, whenever that may be! Additionally but not related to this game, I've taken the time to catch a "highlight reel" of your playthrough of my fave bits from the first 3 Halo games, and I'm really looking forward to when you get to Reach! In the meantime, I hope you enjoy ODST though, that one is great too!

I think that you should play hl2 first and leave dlcs for later. The differences between these games would throw you off too much.

Congratulations on beating the first half life! I genuinely think you are probably going to enjoy the sequel. (Please don't play MMod with it, despite the fact that i know people would ask for it, MMod makes too many little changes to the base experience...) So, now that you have gotten here, this is everything i can legally say to clear up some things, Everything i say here isn't a spoiler, but instead is info either given by context clues from the game, or from Q&As with the story writer: We know very little about the G-man, other than he is called the G-man (only ever in credits.) and he is probably not a robot. He has no relation to Xen's aliens. The Nihilanth, the final boss you fought is the one leading the alien army in Xen. The Nihilanth is the one who was enslaving the Vortigaunts, and is apparently connected to the Alien Controllers. According to the story writer, When gordon killed the Nihilanth, all of the alien controllers dropped dead. The other thing we have confirmed about the Nihilanth, is that he is the last member of his race. and he is running from *something* It appears that The Nihilanth seen a small rip between Xen and our world after the test went wrong, and decided to hold the rip open to send his forces (and a bunch of animals) through. As for any other last minute things worth clearing up, It is strongly implied that Black Mesa has known about Xen for a long time, and has secretly been doing experiments going into and researching its wildlife before the incident happened. It's just, the sample gordon had to work with, was a Xen Crystal, which seems to be REALLY powerful and unstable from the looks of things.... We know so little about Xen, and anything we've ever been told about it from the story writer has left people with more questions, we know that Xen is a "border world", a world between dimensions, which is why its effectively floating islands instead of an actual planet. and we know that EVERY Xen alien originated from other worlds, and therefore, Xen has no original native creatures... weird isn't it? This is why the Xen Aliens are so diverse from each other in design, because most of them came from their own worlds, where they probably would've never interacted with each other normally. ----- I do very much would love to see you continue atleast Gordon's journey. Blue shift is short (but a character from it IS an important figure in the series overall story, its still skippable enough if you want to just do the main story though.), and Opposing force is truly optional, but is a really creative and cool entry, Half life 2, Half life 2: Episode 1, and Episode 2 are all great games, with the two episodes being shorter than regular half life 2 is, i think you'd really enjoy them. Especially with some of the things you've talked about within this playthrough specifically. and hey, you could always go back and do Blue shift and Opposing force afterwards if you want to.

I'm so impressed with the way you dodged all of the obstacles from 34:28 onwards on your first try! I do think the whole factory section dragged a bit too long. Black Mesa's version of Xen is a LOT longer than the original game's version of Xen. Thank you so much for playing this whole game! I'm glad you made it through. Congratulations! You mention a couple of the spin-offs in the outro but if you really wanted to, you could jump right to Half-Life 2, if you were keen to see Gordo again. The spin-offs have very little to do with the main story. I think Opposing Force is a lot of fun but it was made by a different studio, so it's not canon. On the other hand, Blue Shift WAS made by the same studio but I don't think it's anywhere near as good as the original Half-Life (or Opposing Force). But that's just my opinion. Maybe they'll be more your thing.

The Gman talks like that because “he is a being getting used to the idea of having lungs”. Hence all the breaths he has to take and the weird pronunciations. And no, even decades after the original release none of us know who/what he is, or who his “employers” are.

1:33:21 this boss fight, being way better than the original boss fight of the original game that you can't tell you doing damage and the motherfucker has 1 hit kill attacks that if it catches you on the way up to be able to hit its weakspot, ends up being frustating or if you get lucky and land on its head, it wouldn't able to do shit and you being able to beat it to death with the crowbar, also it *constantly* teleports you elsewhere and you have to parkour your way back into the fight and as i said *he does it alot* wich can kill the mood of the fight rather quickly, here tough, nihilianth would teleport stuff from earth to throw at you, from forklifts to fucking tanks, also having a shitload of ammo for almost all your weapons, while on the original, if you arrive with low ammo, gooe fucking luck able to kill nihilanth with the limited supplys you find xD And also its clear what to do to damage him unlike on the original as the crystals that regenates its shields being visible it does that and the crystals that come out of the floor to heal him and on the original you see the healing crystals but you ain't told visually that heals him xD
