Well, would you look at that video length! Welcome to the channel, everybody ;)
Today, we're gonna go through Gorillaz's sixth studio album The Now Now. I shall attempt to give my thoughts on the album as a whole, track for track, while offering possible interpretations of the lyrics, themes and so on. This is the first time I'm doing something on this scale, so it's a little scary! Hopefully you will all find it fun.

You KNOW the analysis is in-depth when it’s longer than the actual album ;) Welcome, fellow viewers, to my in-depth personal review and analysis of The Now Now. I didn’t just want to leave the album with a short concise little review, and therefore we’re here now. This is the first time I have really done something on this scale, so it’s a little bit scary! Hopefully I did alright, and you find it fun and interesting. It’s just my opinion after all, you know?

I really like Snoop's verse on Hollywood. It perfectly contrasts Jamie's verses. Jamie calls out to everyone else to get involved and sings about how "seductive" Hollywood is, but Snoop acts as an antagonist, displaying how Hollywood, money, jealousy and fame can cause people to reject the reasons they went there in the first place and turn them into self-absorbed narcissists, the exact thibg Jamie is trying to prevent.

I think Snoop Dogg "playing as himself" in "Hollywood" adds to the song. Snoop Dogg is what you are jealous of. When he first came in to the scene, people didn't think much of him, but suddenly nobody could match him. People in Hollywood want to be the next Snoop Dogg; they want to knock him off his throne, but nobody can live up to him. I think the line "I'm lion in the Dogpound" says it all; Hollywood is the "dogpound," a prison, and Snoop is the lion fighting a bunch of "dogs" off. The analogy also tells how people can become animalistic in Hollywood. Also, love your reviews.

I think the "lion in the dogpound" line is also like a callback to his "Snoop Lion" stint... but overall I feel like his part in the song was good, but kinda weak? It just didn't have enough oomph imo

When I was listening to the album I could help but think that most of these song are about 2-D just reflecting on everything that has happened to him since he meet Murdoc and joined the band. I couldn't help but think, after listening to Fire Flies (for the fourth time), that he might thinking about Paula. Usually their "love" songs aren't directed at anyone (because Murdoc is usually the one writing them), but this album is about 2-D and as far as we know, 2-D is the only one who has been in a romantic relationship. I won't be surprised since it's been almost 20 years since he last saw her and by that fact that I don't think he's really gotten over the betrayal (from her or Murdoc). Also, I totally think that 2-D had something to do with Murdoc getting framed. After everything that Murdoc has done to he from physically and mentally abusing him to STRAIGHT UP KIDNAPPING AND IMPRISONING HIM. 2-D would have to be nominated to sainthood if he didn't even attempt to get back at Murdoc! }:( P.S: Awesome video Hoody, I always like listening to some of your thoughts. It help me see thing I may not have noticed before on my own. :)

I am NOT a fan of Murdoc/2D (or Murdoc in general, eugh) but if you take the time to imagine that these 'relationships' he's singing about is about his relationship with Murdoc that he's formed in his head due to the amount of abuse hes been subjected to by him, as well as his Stockholm Syndrome, things on this album get a LOT more depressing. That he's 'not going to cry' over him being in jail, because he thinks hes losing someone he cares for or somehow cares for him. I have a (very bad) feeling that his abuse has caused him to latch onto his abuser, as many victims do. He's made up this sick and twisted 'relationship' with him inside of his head, and he's coping with him being in jail. He's losing himself because he feels horrible even saying that he has some power over him. So he acts like he doesn't care about him. But his personal journal shows the way he feels a little more. I'm saying these things as someone who has/still is experiencing the same mental problems. It's hard to let go of someone who makes you think they're the reason who made you as good as you are. You create excuses as to why they treat you the way they do, but in your head, they still care about you, right? I'm going to probably get hate for this but I just had to say it. The album is probably about Murdoc.
@lunedez
@lunedez 5 років тому
Leo Wilkinson I can agree with this. This album reminds me about all of my abusive relationships I’ve had/have. Hell, I still try to call the people who abused me to see if they’re okay (or if they secretly hate me). Calling the world from isolation if you will. 2D and Murdoc have this toxic, twisted relationship that when in it, you’ll never truly get out. It is hard, but we do need to remind ourselves that no matter what we cannot please everyone, not even ourselves.
@alain-fc5ps5ce5i
@alain-fc5ps5ce5i 5 років тому
This is so true. We must respect everyone's opinion, but it's so obvious that at least one song in this album talks about the Murdoc and 2D's relationship. It is so sad to know that even when he is in prison, 2D can not stop thinking about him. It even opens us more the possibility that 2D has fallen in love with him..someway. Either way, it's a toxic relationship.

I'm not sure if I can call myself a fan of Murdoc/2D. If I do people would probably think of the romantic sort of pairing while I see it as anything but. That still won't change that it's an interesting pairing to me. So far I've worked with a couple of different pairing relationships but never really an abusive one. These subject matters would just need so much more research and thought put into them than the vanilla romantic relationships if they want to come across as believable and realistic and not as farfetched or even a flat out insult.

That's a great review, but personally I think Tranz is way better in the studio version. Why? Because it sound like 2-D. It sounds like Gorillaz. In live performances Damon sings in his way, not 2-D's way, if you know what I mean. When I hear Gorillaz, I picture 2-D singing, not Damon.

I would love to see a music video for Souk Eye which kind of shows us 2D wandering, singing the song, on him missing Murdoc. I feel like he could be in the Studio with Russel and Noodle singing the song (kind of as if we're experiencing the song actually being made) and as this is going on, we see Murdoc breaking out of jail, and at the last scene of the music video we see Murdoc walking in the studio (as 2D finishes the song) looking at the band members as each of them are in awe shock seeing Murdoc after all this time. Also, your video is very informative and I agree with nearly every point in your video on each of the tracks, amazing video! Although on Hollywood, Snoop's verse is a bit lacking, it is still generally really good and his voice and flow really add to the song. My personal ranking of the songs from best to worst on the album would be: Souk Eye Fire Flies Kansas Sorcererz Tranz Humility Lake Zurich Idaho Magic City Hollywood One Percent

I really agree with your interpretation of Souk Eye. I understand everything Murdoc has done to 2D and I want more than anything for 2D to just be happy, but something in me just can't fully believe that 2D would be perfectly okay without Murdoc. They've been through so much and I can imagine that 2D would wish for a good relationship with him. Then again, I can also imagine him being involved with Murdoc being framed, which is where things get kinda messy for me... My assumption (Not saying it's true in any way shape or form. Just a theory) is that 2D may have finally snapped at Murdocs behavior, playing a part in Murdoc being framed, then maybe regretting it? It is possible that 2D just can't feel fully happy knowing someone he's known for so long is rotting in jail. He's happier, but also kinda unhappy, if that makes any sense. I'm not sure, but I feel that this is probable. Sorry for the rambling. Also, phenomenal review!

I am going to be perfectly honest and say that this was so much better than I expected! I loved your earlier reviews on the songs and I thought that’s what you were simply going to do here, but the amount of thought that went into lining up thoughts with music with visuals very clearly shined through here. I personally hadn’t listened to any gorrilaz before I saw your review of humility after it got on trending, and so far I have been blown away at what the band (yes I know it’s mainly Damon) has come up with. For me, the album itself having a strong retro 80’s feel was something I completely did not expect and didn’t know could be pulled off well in this day and age. A few songs individualy blew my mind at how music could be pulled off well, mainly looking at fire flies, sorcerers, magic city and seuk eye, each for various reasons. I will respectfully argue that snoop dog’s verse is meant to be the counterpoint to the theme of Hollywood, almost acting as a distraction for the listener to take them away from the theme of the song, which it absolutely did for me the first couple of time I heard it, but that’s just what I see. Congrats on all the work you put into this video, it is extremely well done and I am glad that you pulled this off well!

Oh shit, this album(in my mind) is about 2d's recovery from Stockholm syndrom, the "save us from him" posters were about Murdoc. Eventhough the surface level is 2d missing murdoc, Russle and those posters are the reality of Murdoc's abuse poking through the bright memories that 2d has of murdoc and his denial of his own pain. It's about him accepting there is pain there, and that it will take time and a lot of effort to move on from this.

During Souk Eye I actually imagine 2D just sitting in a dark room while some light streams through the blinds. Amazing how songs can send different images to people's heads Also I can't be the only one who thought that the drawing on the notebook page is from Stylo

I really love this Album since i can deeply relate to 2D's Feeling of isolation and how some songs in contrast sound happy but the lyrics are making me question my entire existence. I also think that the fans need to throw away the high expectations, sure it's amazing to see Your favorite Band taking music into a new direction and making a great impact but it doesn't always have to be that way as long as The Music makes you feel something, taking you into a new world and even make you think in a different way than i believe it accomplished it's Goal. Damon clearly Loves what he is doing and The love is very present in this album, im glad he is focusing on making Good music , tell a story and experiment around rather than follow trends or try to revolutionize the Music itself. So plug in your speakers, turn the volume to the max and Blast the Album.

Fantastic video. I started watching this channel when I saw the Gorillaz collection video and it helped me to see the range of interesting and diverse content that this group are capable of making. They’re currently my favorite band. It would mean a lot to me if you watched my review of The Now Now, I tried to go pretty in-depth with it and the lyrics keep meaning more and more to me with repeated listens of the album. Also, I completely agree with you. Snoop Dogg’s verse hardly has any charisma or substance. Only part of the album I dislike.

13:37 I actually saw an extract from 2D's notebook (which I think comes with a special Vynil set) where at first "I don't want to cry" was written but then crossed out for "not gonna" which makes it even more heartbreaking to me

Hoodo. This is a wonderful review. This album and review provided catharsis that was much needed in a time of my personal isolation. I too have lost people I love and cared for. I too feel alone and unloved like 2D. But this provided some hope. A beam of light that gleams in the darkest of isolation chambers. I can persevere through the loneliness, because I know I'm not the only one suffering. I have hope that I will get the love and support I need. Just like I hope Damon does as well. I absolutely loved the album as well as your review. You really did analyse the shit out of this thing. And it was an analysis that definitely resonated with me

Man bro nice job on the video. When you explained every deep meaning that even though its in your perspective, 2D almost relates to me. Like in Kansas and Souk eye how he wants to get back with a person. Its just like the situation that im in. That why I really love gorillaz because all the lyrics and songs can really relate to some people and I think that's what a real band should do for people.

When i first listened i was hooked but after a few more listens this easily became my favorite album of theirs. I love the themes and instrumentals of every track which all flows together amazingly. Its such a moody album that gives you chills (at least i got them). I love the feeling that the more and more you listen to the album it gets more and more moody. Start off with the fun and poppy Humility and as the album progresses we get songs like Sorcererz to Fire Flies to Souk Eye. Such a fantastic album 💕 Great analysis mah dude Keep it up :)

Incredible video!! I really admire the fact that you took some extra time to make this video, and it was incredibly moving :> I was only wondering something, Did it bother you that The Now Now did not have as much of a fictional storyline like Plastic Beach? I still loved the album to bits, personally. Great review!
