I love how when a GM says blundered, it's when they mess up their structure a bit and maybe lose 0.1 of an advantage, but when I say I blundered, it's when I left my queen hanging with checkmate in 2 after sacrificing my rook thinking I made a brilliant move.

Funfact: This type of nervousness around stronger players was the reason many players disliked and some players outright hated playing Judith Polgar or Gary Kasparov. Anand was infamous for often being intimidated by Kasparov which contributed at least to some crushing losses Anand had against him. Psychology plays a certain role despite all the rationalization and professionalism over the board. Kramnik at one point gave an extensive interview talking about how he won against Kasparov in 2000, and admitted that it was mostly a psychological trap since Kasparov, the best player of all time, was so much stronger (Kasparov 2849, Kramnik 2770). The thing with the Berlin defense appeared fairly late during his preparation, roughly 6 weeks before the match, more like an accident, but an accident Kramnik jumped on and made a key to ambush Kasparov. The general plan was to play things Kasparov did not excel in or did not like. Sounds simple but Kramnik said in regular tournament chess exactly that was very difficult to do because Gary was (and kind of still is) the leading expert in the Najdorf and the Grünfeld. He also said Gary was the significantly better player and he needed to shock-attack him, gain +0.5 or +1 and hold on to it like there is no tomorrow, which has to do with the statistic nature of chess. Even a player that much stronger struggles with equalizing in only 15 games ...and this is why since 2000 the chess world championship was never again the match of the definitive 2 best players nor was the world champion always clearly the best classical chess player. 12 games is not enough to determine that. 24 is slightly better but technically still not enough to minimize statistical variance. Kramnik also hoped that Kasparov would be more occupied than usual and not sit at the board at his 100% due to all the press work of the world champion and by the fact that Kasparov was involved in the improvement of chess engines via consulting work. Some of the preparation also went against the Najdorf-Sicilian and the Grünfeld-Indian. Kramnik also said that he knew Kasparov was at that time already heavily relying on engines but back then certain things were out of the understanding and beyond the capabilities of those engines so that he tried to achieve positions in which engine preparation would not help Kasparov. Overall, Kramnik succeeded by putting together this very specific anti-person strategy...he was one of the few players openly saying "I am not afraid of Kasparov. Let him do his gesturing at the board. I sometimes enjoy it when he makes a face because i may have made a good move he did not anticipate as much.". However, Kramnik winning led to the absolute BONKERS situations that until Kasparov's retirement in 2005 the BY FAR and UNDISPUTED best player in the world was not world champion, plus, all the obnoxious antics, politics and intrigues by FIDE to stall and to prevent a re-match so Kasparov could never win his title back... I can understand Magnus not being happy with the world championshop mode. And I agree with Kasparov and Karpov who both say the mode should be like back in the days: Play until a certain amount of wins, e.g. +6, draws do not count, have a decisive lead over your opponent, e.g. +2 or +3 (6-2, 6-3), and just have a large but limited amount of games allowing to determine the true best player in classical chess, e.g. 50 games, 60 games, maybe 80 games. Play for the title only every 3 to 4 years. That would make it a real high-end battle.

I tell my gf every time. I beat her most times just because I can keep my cool and stay put when things get nasty for me, even if I'm losing, so I eventually turn things around, meanwhile she is getting frustrated and sees how an almost certain victory gets dragged and consumed in time. That's when she makes a mistake. It's like in arm wrestling, you can win by purely exhausting your opponent

The 2nd Alex i met when staying at a hostel. He seemed nice at first but he turned out to be some sociopath/psychopath that got pleasure from manipulating and tormenting others. He never got violent but he would something threaten it. The 3rd Alex was my roommate. He would constantly steal my food and he snuck in my bedroom when i was gone or when i was asleep. I finally realized that he was in my room when i was sleeping because some large items were moved that wasn't moved when i was awake. When i asked him about it, he said he was looking for his cat.
