Thank you as always for a great review. After buying the max I was very happy with it and wasn’t sure if I wanted to do the the eBay shuffle again. I’m looking forward to this cpu, in a max form factor, hopefully with the anolog shoulder buttons, the improved cpu, tweaked keyboard, and a 1tb sad. I really like the gaming and mini pc form factor. Waiting for the max 2!

I think the keyboard is as good as they could have done, this is for gaming and I absolutely accept the keyboard just to log in then never use again. I’m the opposite with the joysticks though, I hate the Xbox style concave my current favourite controller is the switch pro. I have this on order with the dock just for the crack 👍

Great video! I'm curious if bumping up the TDP on the 1165 a smidge in each power threshold would let it reach the "next gear" and have a good performance tradeoff for the slight increase in power consumption, like 12w, 16w, 22w.

this is their most ambitious handheld PC to date and I'm glad they tried to make something different than what we usually been seeing for the last decades in the portable windows computer scene. as for the size its their numbered "win" lineup and they are known to be small so if big size matters for you then wait for the tiger lake variant of gpd win max which will have the same performance with the win 3.

Pretty good review. There's lots of upside to the device(s), as well as design gambling going on. But as you've pointed out? The keyboard was the drawback for me, as well as certain other design cues. Ultimately, this is the first GPD device in a long time, that I had decided to not back. That, and I've recently found out that with certain GPD models, that replacement parts are incompatible (with no remedy). That might seem unrelated, until one considers maintenance and wear and tear for longevity. GPD is going to have to figure out parts issues like this, with all models in market, to maintain consumer confidence. Anywho, again, great review as always. Thanks for providing it for us!

I love this thing. I really do; the hardware is great. I just wish I could buy it without the thumbstick/controller bits.

I currently own a Win Max and some of the games I tried playing on it have some disappointing outcomes. This device looks promising once Intel gets the drivers fixed. I also know that the Aya Neo is about to go live on Indiegogo soon and it appears to be a decent competitor to this device. would like to see a head to head comparison of the 2, Hell I might even buy one of each, especially if the Aya is released with the same clear shell that the Chinese limited edition came with.

If the ergonomics and keyboard were just a little better, I'd maybe consider it, but given the controls are built into the unit can can't be changed/replaced, I'd worry about their durability. Some angling out on the grips would likely make it a lot more comfortable.

The biggest draw to this device to me is it's versatility. Being able to use it as a gaming handheld, but then docking it at home to an egpu and monitor to turn it into a gaming desktop. what about using a battery bank? which would be best for running it at full power? if they did edge to edge screen then it would be much closer in size. or if they stuck with the a 5.5 in screen and still made it edge to edge they could have made a slightly better controller or made the system what looks like an inch smaller in all dimensions. either way the system could have a drastically different feel with an edgeless display. i agree it needed to be a physical keyboard but how much thicker would that have made the system. what compromise would have had to been made to put one in

Hey! Great video! I've been following your channel for a while now. I recently got my Win 3. Unfortunately, it came with some issues. Actually, everything else works just one. The mouse / gamepad doesn't work out of the box. Things I've done: 1- Factory reset the device. 2- I updated Windows and installed driver pack from their website. 3- Pinhole reset. 4- Rubbed Alcohol and cleaned the pins on the back cover. 5- Tried Gamepad / Mouse / Keyboard Firmware Tool & both sides show, "Unknown Device !" 6- WinControls cannot be opened and shows an error, "Initialization Failed". Any tips? Thanks!

I have loved my GPD Win 2 since I backed it at Indiegogo and played almost every day ever since (I'm on my second battery already). I was so ready for the Win 3 until I saw the tiny 5.5" screen and terrible keyboard. I will get the Aya Neo instead. Yes, it is a bit slower than the Win 3 but love everything else. As for the screen, almost no bezels on the top and bottom, 7" screen, meaning I can actually read what's on the screen!

Hope one day GPD will offer a second screen like 3ds does so 3ds emulation becomes perfect. The second screen can use as virtual keyboard when it’s not emulating 3ds games.

Thanks for this extensive and thorough review. One thing I believe wasn't really touched upon is analog stick mechanical quality and potential deadzone issues, which in my opinion could kill this device given it's intended nature as a handheld gaming device as you so clearly stated. Also, it's fairly obvious the design is emphasizing analog stick placement so they better be above decent. Given they are going for high quality face buttons and d-pad I would assume the analog sticks should follow the same general direction, but nothing can be taken for granted. Being able to play AAA shooters or action games with complex mechanics could become a pain under such circumstances, which would undermine all the power this device offers to a certain extent. Also, how serviceable do controls seem to be?

I'm already waiting for the community to find a way to get a TN panel on it. Well when it comes out first

I left a comment on a different video before finding this one. Woops. Do you suspect that the "Effective frequency" of 1.1GHz on the i7 is actually accurate? Or is that benchmark just significantly more GPU intensive than CPU intensive so it doesn't turbo as hard?

I just backed it, although I already have a Nintendo Switch, there are so many emulated games I wish I could play but cannot on my Switch :)

If this was 8" I would so regret getting the GPD WIN MAX........ but it's a small 5.5" so I really don't care about it :) However if my reasons to buy it were to only hook it up to a mobile 10" screen for example (hotel rooms etc) then it's a must buy because of the performance.

I’m torn but I’m the end, I think I’m sticking with my Win Max. I appreciate the GPU bump of the Win 3 but for me in a pound for pound sense, the Win Max as more checkboxes covered. A (compared to the Win 3) very useable keyboard, Keyboard and mouse gaming for my old school GOG fix, bigger screen and I’m just able to use it as a PC when I need to. Although it’s nice seeing lots of games at 60 FPS on the Win 3, the Max runs what I need it to run over 30 FPS.

can you play with it on big tv like nintendo switch ? cause if you use the TB port you cant use an extern egpu or ?

This is going to be the third most powerful computer in my home... just saying. It will rarely be docked. This is however the device I asked for 🙌

i think with just a very small compromise to size and weight, they would have hit a really good sweetspot. if the screen was slightly bigger with more vertical real estate, 6.5" 16:10, or even 6" 16:10, it would have been way more usable as a pc. and they should have kept a physical keyboard, the one from gpd win 2 is way more functional, so something like it, or maybe something like the keyboards of the blackberry phones from a decade ago, would have been great. even if this raise the thickness with a couple of mm.

What about the Aya Neo? Seems like that may crush this? Thoughts?
