on the palomino, you can close the door turn the fantastic fan on reverse and the canvas will suck in as you drop the pop up roof.

Funny, but- I really appreciated the fact that you ENJOYED the sense of openness of the pop-top. I couldn't really get it until you 'splained how it felt like you're closer to nature. But, we are planning on living in our TC, so- for us at least, we will definitely do a hard sided, four season camper! Great job, and I was impressed with how fair you were to both! Thank again!

Great Video. You covered all points well. I have a 2018 Palomino SS1500. One thing all Rv ers share is space limitations. I have added several options to my camper which also adds to the total weight. Fortunately I have Ford F350 SRW which handles the extra weight without overloading the truck. Great video! I just returned yesterday to Arizona after finding a good deal in Indiana on a Palomino SS550. Coming home, road debris found my passenger side mirror and shattered it. We bought a 2019 Travel lite 625, it was the lightest one we found for our short box 4x4 Silverado and well within our payload, we pack minimal and light. It does not have a wet bath, only a portapotti in a cupboard and outside shower, which we set up a pop up shower tent outside. We choose this specific layout as my husband is claustrophobic sleeping in an overhang and I didn't want to crawl over him at night getting into bed. The table/bench bed is the size of a single bed. We do not live full time in it but use it a lot 7 mths of the year (retired), fishing, hunting, travelling and random camping. We mostly dry camp off road. It has everything we need. Never had any problems with it in 3 years, still like new. We did not want the hassle of a soft top. Hard top is warmer in our colder spring and fall. Stays very warm with the heater and does get a cross breeze with open windows, we also have USB fans and rarely use the air conditioner. We added air bags, good new tires and get our differential serviced once a year. This camper rides well, sometimes we tow an 8ft aluminum boat.

Hi guys! Thank you for the tour and the information. One thing I wonder is about the humidity. The second is, we in Norway do not have the same problem with predators and camping, but is it not the case in the US that in some places it is forbidden with popup campers? And a big thumbs up for the lovely boy.
@GrassRootsLiving
@GrassRootsLiving 3 роки тому
Good question! Yes, there are some campgrounds that do not allow pop-up campers. We have found this to be true in areas where there is a high bear population. For both the hard side and the soft side, humidity is definitely a problem. This is especially so when the temperature at night gets cold. That little grandson of ours loves the spotlight. :) lol Thanks for watching!

I had a travel lite, and when I opened a few spaces and got to see the interior of the structure I was shocked. I couldn't wait to trade it in. That's by far the cheapest build possible. But it does look nice and shinny on the outside,
@GrassRootsLiving
@GrassRootsLiving Рік тому
I never got to see the interior of my travel lite truck camper before I traded it for a new travel trailer. I would never have assumed that it would have been built with top quality materials like a Lance. It cost about half as much as a Lance camper. I can say that my wife and I lived in it full time for over a year. We have owned several RVs over the years. I would say that the number of problems that we had with it was on the middle to low spectrum compared with the other campers. We were actually pretty pleased with it. I understand that we may have just gotten lucky, but I can't find much to complain about it when compared to others that we have owned. Thanks so much for your input. Yeah I'm starting out on slide in camping, at 1st it was pop up types but, once you hear of the 'extras' list cost that ended that search. Later on hearing more negitives such as the amount of condensation or incoming noise that sealed the deal for a hardside. The travel lite has issues too, the awfully small refrigerator being one and, the seating in the middle as opposed to the back ie views would be an issue.

Agreed but we still loved the Travel Lite! Thanks for watching!
@wayawolf1967
@wayawolf1967 2 роки тому
I have had several of each type. They both have pros and cons. The pop ups will work on most full size half tons or larger. The hard side campers should always be on a 3/4 ton or larger unless you modify the half ton truck to handle the sway from cross winds and un level places you drive. Simply driving at an angle over a curb will cause the top heaviness of the tall camper to cause the truck to pitch side to side.

No way! Yes, a few weeks ago we ate at a Braum's in Blackwell on our way back to the KC area. My biggest concern about the Palomino was the fact that the mechanism for the roof lift came off its track. I fixed it but it always worried me. There are actually quite a few features about the Palomino that I wished my hard side had. Yes, I would recommend it. We actually bought it off a guy on Craigslist. Great video. I enjoyed it. I have a Lance 650 hard side for a few months, now i have a buyer for it. It has very little space inside and feels heavy for my 1/2 ton. I did make a couple suspension upgrades. Im looking into soft side camper lately, for gas saving and weight. I found Palomino SS-1251. It has wet bath, flush toilet, but still weight 1800 lbs. No gray tank, kitchen sink water go out to the ground. When shower, gray valve need to be in open position. I travel to another town to work for 5 days every other week. So i mainly use the camper at company parking lot. For sleep / cook / relaxing, not so much for camping. If i want to goto a gym for shower or goto a store, i would need to lower the top before driving. It seems like alot of work, also the motor or the actuator seem to break easily. Also it's not very stealthy. Anybody that sees my truck with top extended knows that someone is inside. Today i found online about Palomino hard side, HS-1803 and HS-750. They are identical. Weight 1870 lbs. Has gray and black tank. I might go with the hard side. It would be nice to have both campers like you guys. One for off-road camping trip or long road trip, the other for stealthy living. Your video is very informative, helps me make my decision. One thing i dont mind is to be inside a soft side during a rain storm, i would enjoy that; if nothing leaks.

Whats best is whichever one fits comfortably in the back of my frontier pro 4x
@GrassRootsLiving
@GrassRootsLiving 2 роки тому
I am afraid that neither of these would work for a Frontier Pro 4x. The payload capacity of that truck is only 1200 lbs. These empty both weigh over 1300 lbs. A good one for your truck might be: fourwheelcampers.com/model/swift-model-pop-up-truck-camper-leader-mid-size-trucks/ There are some that weigh much less than the one I just linked. You might want to look at these : trailandsummit.com/what-is-the-lightest-pop-up-truck-camper/

The Reico Titan roof lift user manual states users can have 200 lbs additional weight on the roof during operation. Have you two had any load on your roof while operating?

If it's just one person, you can be pretty stealth if you're okay with sleeping on the dinette bed. Keep the top down and no one will think you're inside. It's not as comfortable, but you could probably stealth camp anywhere. You could probably even camp in a parking garage that way.

No, we did not add solar. We have a portable solar generator with a 175w flexible solar panel. That allows us the opportunity to move the panel with the position of the sun for Max efficiency. Thanks for watching!

Good vid but common sense I'd go with the non pop-up. I'm looking for one but prices are stupid for used ones. I have no idea why idiots think they can get what they pay for them and a camper driving it off the lot is at least 20% off. Also seems like many do not use long long term but trade them in from what i see. I drive a new diesel so weight and wind doesn't matter to me. Any recommendations for doomsday/heavy use campers? I've looked at Scout Kenai/Lance/ and Lite something and all the one's made out of 2 pieces fiberglass or structural for guaranteed no leaks.

Multi-decade pop-up camper owner here, but I've also owned large travel trailers. It seems like many of your "cons" for the pop-up are based on user error or your feelings. For example, you said you felt safer in the hard-side camper. Why? It's as easy to pop the door open on a hard-side as it is on a pop-up. Did you ever talk about fuel mileage? If so, I missed it. The additional drag and weight of a hard-side camper makes long trips MUCH more expensive. Anyway, interesting video.
@GrassRootsLiving
@GrassRootsLiving 2 роки тому
Agreed, it is based on our own feelings. I know a lot of people who think we are crazy for living as a couple in a truck camper. When we said we felt safer, we were mostly talking about severe winds. The canvas top of the pop up really felt like it was taking a beating during windy thunderstorms. We did not get that feeling when we were in the hard-side. We actually did mention the fuel mileage saving in the video. I personally liked the pop up truck camper for that reason. However, there are two of us so I couldn't just go with my thoughts. I’m looking to buy a travel light truck camper within the next few days. Now that you’ve had yours for a while are you happy with it? As far as build quality no leaks, or has there been issues? I know some of the earlier travel light campers had issues, and bad reviews. Since you stay so much time in years, I’d appreciate your input and opinion..

That is a great idea! I wish I would have thought about it before we did this comparison video. My wife is about 5'7" tall and she could sit at the kitchen table with the top closed somewhat comfortably. At 6'0", I could sit at the kitchen table but I wouldn't say it was necessary comfortable. It was doable but not all together comfortable. Hope that helps.

I want to invest in a camper. I have a 4runner. I'm thinking of just putting it on a utility trailer until one day I do get a truck. The reason I want a truck camper won't have to register it or find parking space etc.

@GrassRootsLiving 2 роки тому
There are a lot of great reasons to get a truck camper. We loved travelling in it for the very reasons you brought out. :) We did end up trading in our truck camper but only because for 2 people living in it full time, we just needed a little more space. Thanks for watching!

What is the minimum truck to carry the hard camper? I am thinking of a newer Tundra.
@wayneswoorrld
@wayneswoorrld 2 роки тому
It all depends on the total weight of the hardside camper, the total payload of the Tundra pick-up. Don't forget to add the weight of all passengers, pets, food, clothing, camping gear, and any towed vehicles. Before You know it you have exceeded Your payload rating of Your truck. In My opinion I would have a hardside on at least a one ton dually truck.
@GrassRootsLiving
@GrassRootsLiving 2 роки тому
I agree alot with what Wayne said in the other reply to your comment. I will say that this particular hard side truck camper is very light. We do not have a one ton dually and our F-250 handed it with no problem fully loaded. However, for almost all other hard sides, I would agree a one ton dually would be my choice.

My wife and I are having this exact discussion. I learned a lot from this video. You didn’t mention anything about mold or mildew that can grow on the soft top camper. Was it ever a problem? Does it wear out from the sun? Im sure there were times you had to close your camper in the rain and the soft top material stays wet for extended periods. Can it be replaced easily? Thank you for a great informative video.
@GrassRootsLiving
@GrassRootsLiving 2 роки тому
Although we did not have the soft side long enough to notice a mold problem. We have seen other channels describe it as a concern. The canvas was tough so the sun had little affect on it. When we had to close it wet, we opened it fully as soon as we could. I can’t imagine it would be easy to replace, I guess that is why we always let it dry throughly before storing it long term. Great questions! Thanks for asking!

The Actuators on the Palominos are trash. After replacing them 3 or 4 times over a 6 month period, I just decided to replace them all with better quality ones. One thing I really love about my Palomino, I can now go down some trails I couldn't with my hard-side.
@GrassRootsLiving
@GrassRootsLiving 11 місяців тому
Good call on replacing them. Yes, we could go places in the Palomino that we couldn't in the hard side. Also, it gave us slightly better gas mileage. Thanks for your input, it is greatly appreciated.

@GrassRootsLiving
@GrassRootsLiving 2 роки тому
First of all, thanks for following our channel. :) Yes, it is really stable. We don't take unnecessary chances with it though. Super high winds are a concern but we never felt like we needed to pull off the road. On the other hand, if the forecast called for very high winds we would try not to make it a travel day. Great question!

Good comparison points but overall decreased drivability especially in wind, restricted camp access do to height and weight, if no electricity you have restricted airflow, do not cook the same type of meals, increased gas consumption….not so sure I draw the same conclusion. You may be better served by a trailer type setup. Leave the truck camper to the true adventurers
@GrassRootsLiving
@GrassRootsLiving 2 роки тому
Thanks for your observations. We always tell people that picking out an RV of any type is purely an individual choice. That is important for one person may not be as important for another. By the way, we traded in our truck camper last week for a very small travel trailer. Interestingly, people tell us that they could never be the true adventurers that we are because that could never live full time in such a small place. ;) Lol Thanks again for your comment.
