No one else has the right to tell a victim-survivor to forgive their abuser. That's only ever the choice of the victim alone. I don't forgive my abusers and I'm quite at peace with that.

This. Anger is a rational and valid reaction to abuse and it can be a source of strenght and motivation, quite a powerful one at that. It’s absolutely possible to channel it in a healthy way and letting go of it is not the right way for everybody, nor does it have to be or should be demanded.

So many family members have said things like “can’t you forgive her?” - Sure, forgiveness is fine. But those same people think that forgiveness means you continue a relationship with the abuser, forget about past offenses, and expect no accountability, changes in behavior, apologies, or contrition. Forgiveness does not mean any of those things. It doesn’t mean we are going to expose our families to a toxic, abusive human ever again.

Forgiveness is a gaslighting tool. No, you don't drink poison when you are angry. You release the poison. Why do we tell women we need to forgive and tell men they need revenge. Women should get the same rights to revenge as men.
@jeffrey.p.thornton
@jeffrey.p.thornton 5 місяців тому
Speaking as a man who grew up in an angry house, and who acquired the habit of being angry at a young age: every day I lived like that was poison. There is no fantasy of revenge that could possibly entice me to embrace that life again. I understand how a person can use the language of forgiveness to silence you when he doesn't want to deal with what you have to tell them. I'm very sorry if that's something that you've lived. But it's TRUTH that releases the poison; anger is only helpful to the extent it helps you see the truth. Once you've done that, trust me: let it go. Good luck to you!
@lhj276
@lhj276 5 місяців тому
@@jeffrey.p.thornton That might be true for a man, but women are constantly told to shut down our anger. To forgive. I get very angry and then it passes. I can have a good day where I get very angry or miffed or whatever. But it passes. I'm not afraid of my rage. I am happy to express it. and expunge it.

@@jeffrey.p.thorntonI agree that the truth is what sets us free, but when everyone around you is so commited to avoid the truth at all costs, how can you not feel angry and resentful? Angry women have always been labeled as hysterical and crazy. Back in the days, they would institutionalize women who had every reason to be angry as the last resort to shut them up and stop them from speaking the truth. Wanting to acknowledge the truth around people who live in denial will sure make you seem crazy, when in fact, you're the only one who lives in reality. The household I grew up in wasn't angry like yours. We learned to people-please from a young age and to keep the peace even if it meant being deeply uncomfortable and cutting ourselves from our instincts. I understand why you feel like anger is not the solution, because being angry it was your default. But in my case, submission and denial of the truth was the default, so for me, learning to express anger is needed. It helps me develop the self-respect needed to put boundaries in place and protect myself.

The mother is not giving sincere vibes to me. The whole "you've gotta forgive and let go" from here seems MUCH more motivated by her own guilt and selfish wishes than it does by her daughter's grieving process. Lady, you don't get to tell her what she HAS to do. You lost that right when you didn't protect her from ONGOING abuse. Amanda can choose to let go of her anger and yet at the same time not forgive HIM for doing it and not forgive YOU for not being with it as a mother. You failed her, too, and she doesn't have to forgive any of that. Those two concepts are two separate things.

when someone abuses you, whether s*xually, physically, emotionally, etc, and they absolutely refuse to acknowledge it and/or apologize, it eats away at you. You feel like you can't move on until they do, but the kind of person who can inflict abuse on a child is also the same type of person who will NEVER feel any desire to take accountability. People around you will pressure you to "forgive" (AKA "stop making a big stink and shut up about it already"). Don't forgive them, they don't deserve your forgiveness, but you do deserve to come to grips with knowing that waiting for a monster to do the right thing is an unreasonable expectation, they are simply not capable of being a decent person. Once you accept that, once you give up on their humanity and stop expecting any remorse, then you can start to heal.

I pray healing to your entire family and every soul he destroyed. Your mother didn’t have the protection of her own mother so the promise she made to her was in vain and I wish her much healing too. People in trauma can’t process things and I’m so glad to hear your sister is helping break that generational abuse cycle.

You guys didn’t even do that much to confront him. Politely vaguely talking and showing some voice messages isn’t the kind of serious attention this subject deserves. It’s honestly a shame how passive he was treated and every single person was complicit in his horrible behaviour. More needs to be done than polite conversation and the mother can not take accountability for knowingly leaving her children with her horrible father and complicit mother. This is insane

You absolutely don’t have to forgive. Ever. Anger may be a very based and healthy reaction to certain things and it can be channeled into constructive actions. It can be a source of strength and a fuel for activism. While forgiving may bring a feeling a peace for some, it’s not the right way for everybody and it’s never okay to demand it from someone who’s been wronged.

These are two of the bravest women. Frankly I would have ghosted the mother and abusive father years ago. I know that as a young mother she felt she had nowhere to go. But there have always been places. If you ever have an opportunity to go work in a women’s shelter or transitional housing program as a volunteer do it. You will feel great about yourself and what you have to offer.

I was emotional abused as a child. Even though I disagree with the Debbie (mom) her behavior it’s typical of a person with deep shame and hurt. My therapist told me between 4 to 10 years old, your memories affect your self identity, your social interactions and how you see things…When she was indefensible no one protected her, she suffered alone + the social stigma and embarrassment knowing that monster is your dad. Probably hearing her daughter was a big trigger for her, it probably brought so much pain that she didn’t know how to handle it. Debbie is emotionally numb. Amanda said something extremely important: all these pain is because the grandfather’s abuse and honestly the grandmother’s silence. Debbie if you read this message, I hope you can find help and forgive yourself. Your daughters need you, even though you are a victim, you are their mom and they are suffering. You don’t have to suffer alone anymore, you have each other and can heal together.

Family abuse is the hardest cycle to stop & get out of... abused children can go from being the victims then turning into the next generation of abusers. There is so much trauma growing up with preditors for Family, especially when others in or around them know whats happening yet refuse to acknowledge & stop it or blame you the child for bringing it on yourself "you wanted it" "you allowed it" "you didn't stop it so you must have liked it or asked for it" or they didn't know but when told they want you to "keep it a secret" or just straight call you a lier & refuse to believe you. The mental cartwheels your own family will put you through just to protect the "family"

What’s interest is that this is all being done to “get accountability” however the man you need this from will clearly not take it so I feel like you will never get that so I do understand where the mother comes from about drinking from the toxicity, and knowing when it’s healthier to walk away. I have done this myself and found the greatest release was in walking away and removing the control. To write to former patients as well is bringing others into the pool which although do understand is mostly coming from a “you” driven place. You need closure, you need accountability. These other people may or may not also be seeking that and that’s important to remember that not everyone affected is at the same place in the journey of recovery and kinda forcing it is also not cool and could be very triggering I wonder if you can see past your own grief enough to think how this may affect others? I don’t know it’s all very sad but as it said in the film how can you forgive someone that doesn’t ask for forgiveness? I think that is key here. He believes he is already absolved so I don’t think you will reach true peace, unfortunately.

Forgiveness doesn’t mean that person gets let off the hook, or gets back into your life, or is not guilty of what they did or said. Forgiveness of them, is something you give yourself. You forgive them, then release them from your mind and soul. Leave it to God or the universe to mete out punishment if the courts let you down. Forgive him. Keep clear of him and those like him. There are many like him.

Comparing this documentary to "Just Melvin Just Evil." Old dirty Melvin was nasty and unapologetic to the very end, and his family still visited and buried him. This grandfather Chester did admit and apologize to his family, and yet his family rifles through his stuff with disdain and chucks his body to science with no send off. Then when they can't attack him cause he's dead, they go after the mother who was a victim too. Interesting how the two different families dealt with it. I have to say that the guy that did the Melvin documentary handled his anger much better without hate in his heart. I guess both documentaries were exploitation, but the Melvin doc seemed a little less so. Anyway this family seems evil, js.

Not to speak for anyone's experiences in this film, but just in general, this is an awful generalization and it speaks to what a harmful hack Dr. Drew was and is and how he shouldn't have been speaking to kids on his old Loveline show for so long with such authority. I used to listen to him in high school and the number of times he would try and insist that a teenage girl who was calling in to his show had been sexually abused because of the sound of her voice, even if she insists no, no she hasn't, was always so disturbing.

This had a lot of missed opportunities, such as going more into detail exactly how this person's abuse affected each member of the family. How it affected them as children, teens, adults, in relationships, etc. I think it would've been interesting to go into the way religion played a part in the abuser, the abused and those that chose to let it continue. It's weird, but the way the film portrayed the family, I felt more sorry for the dad than the mom or the filmmaker. They seemed like they were not honest with him through the very end. Either disown him or accept him. Don't act like you love him to his face then just not answer his calls for months while he's alone and dying. A funeral should've been a given.
