It wasn't mercy, Guts never had any antagonism towards Grifith until the Eclipse. He was leaving because he felt it was the only way he could become a genuine friends to Grifith because of what he overheard after the Adonis incident.

@@Cernunnnos well not really, guts wanted to live his own life for a change ever since he was a kid he was always taught to be in wars and to follow orders. he never really had control of his own path. which is why he left the band of the hawk. and the only reason he came back was for casca because he cares about her and she’s the only person that knows his real story.

@@bandito4492 the seeds of the decision were sewn on the night he overheard Grififth talking with Charlotte. He saw Grififth as his first real friend. The first person who cared about him as a person and not just for what he can offer as a soldier. But then he finds out that from Grifith's perspective, he can't see someone as an equal if they're just blindly following someone else's dream. (This isn't a true, but he's convincing enough.) Which is what forces Guts to confront the way he's living his life. And he goes on examine what he actually wants and what it would mean to live for himself. The dynamic between Guts and Grifith is key to the whole series. It's essentially a love triangle between the two male leads and Casca. If you really pull it apart. I mean the symbolism in this scene alone is palpable. Guts wants to leave, Grifith sees him as his and won't let go. They _cross swords_ and Guts breaks Grifiths. Leaving him impotent and then Grifith _takes back control_ by proving he can have anyone he wants by taking the Princess. It's layed on so thick here.

I don't think the last part is necessarily true, it just show how there lives went in different ways, Griffith had to balance his life as a commander, an aristocrat and the kingdom's politics, while guts only had his life has a professional soldier

Actually Griffith and Guts were equal here. The only reason Guts made Griffith lose was because Griffith actually realized he had no more control over Guts and wasn’t confident in succeeding against him but Guts had full resolve and was as in the moment as Griffith were so he easily defeated him in the moment. Griffith definitely grew more ambitious and mindful of his success but he only waivered because he somewhat envied Guts who had just as strong determination as he did which is why he admired and wanted to keep Guts as a sorr of pet or prized possession to keep for his own amusement and ambiguity

Guts swing also reflects is arc at the moment and his character growth, he is no longer fighting like an angry fool throwing himself in harms way. He looks at his target and his focus and with unwavering strength and resolve move right through Griffith's strike.

i think griffith could've still become stronger but he had to spend most of time politicking and working a desk job. guts as the raider commander spent all of his waking hours either in battle or practicing with his sword.

They were, spiritually, way too far apart from each other to ever truly be friends. But neither of them had ever really learned how to make friends. All Griffith knows is how to manipulate, all Guts does is push people away from him, so in each other they created the facsimile of a friendship. But Guts started to grow and form real bonds with Casca, Judeau, Gaston, Pippin, Rickert, while his attachment to Griffith remained hollow and purely one-sided. Guts genuinely wanted to see Griffith become his best self, Griffith did not feel the same way about Guts. These are two of the greatest characters fiction has ever produced.

Guts's will was also his sword. It seemed crude and unwieldy... something savage... But it was also great, powerful, it could withstand so much abuse and stress, and could cut through anything in its path with a swing while still being controllable in the hands of the proper wielder.

Edit: The eclipse Is a bad way to fully judge his character or his intentions, as he was a man beyond broken at that point. Doubt anyone would make the same decisions after years of torture.

I think so too! It's a lot more important than some people think because it's actually the first time that we hear Griffith's thought in the series.

It just occured to me now that you said it...THIS has been the major missing ingredient in all these Berserk anime adaptations. Its why I get that hollow feeling from so much of these moments.

Actually they focused so much on cool graphics and scenes with shock value that they missed the essence of the story in some parts, like the inner thoughts for example. I showed someone new to Berserk this version, and the point of the anime went completely over their head. Then I showed the '97 version and everything clicked. I'm truly sorry they worked on this masterpiece so hard but had to rush the story in half of the episodes. It's like, failed successfully.

That whole idea of what Griffith consider to be a "friend" may have been true in past, but as time went on after Guts have became a member of the Band of the Falcon, he may have stopped believing in that idea. Guts have become someone that Griffith (even if he at first didn't admit it) could see as a friend, probably even more than that. Even Casca have mentioned that Griffith have changed, and it was because of Guts. During the Eclipse, Griffith have admitted that Guts was the only one who ever made him forget his dream.
