At the height of their popularity throughout the 2000s, military shooters typically emphasized the plight of enlisted soldiers. Most were shooting galleries, wherein players gunned down faceless foes with abandon across many historical or fictional battlefields. Little attention was paid to the human cost of war, including the destruction of civilian life and the emotional turmoil that comes with being on the receiving end of a foreign enemy’s hostility. There were occasional outliers like the controversial No Russian mission in 2009’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 . Yet, a mainstream first-person military shooter wouldn’t centralize the human cost of war on the civilian level until Kaos Studios and publisher THQ unleashed Homefront in the spring of 2011.
Carefully nestled within the core of the original Homefront was a hard-hitting shooter that immersed players in action and occasionally elicited emotional investment. Arguably, for the first time, players felt unbridled hate for their virtual enemies on the battlefield, a field of war that to a lot of gamers, specifically those in the United States, looked a little too much like home.
While Kaos succeeded on this front, and in spades some would argue, a sequel from Dambuster Studios failed to similarly hit the mark. In many respects, 2016’s Homefront: The Revolution neglected to adhere to the framework that outlined its predecessor’s various victories. As a result, this once promising series about a troubling, though implausible, near-future conflict fell flat before it could truly leave a lasting impact on the genre it was designed to reinvigorate.
This is the Rise and Fall of Homefront.

Resistance 2 is proof of that. A game with an absolutely abhorrently awful campaign but has an amazingly fantastic multiplayer suite. it wasn't unique, it was a mash up of every Crytek game they've made but poorly done.....People jerk on and on about Crytek and they're really if anything more overrated than Platinum games. Their games don't push the limits of graphics, they're just piss poorly optimized so they run like trash that looks nice...Homefront the Revolution was mediocre at best, but it feels like that's exactly what Crytek was trying to do until LOL THQ got hold of the IP and we all know THQ is where games go to be aggressively mediocre if not just flat out terrible.

@InfernalMonsoon
@InfernalMonsoon 3 роки тому
Too much in too little time? That doesn't make any sense when despite the frantic firefights and intense situations, The Revolution was very much a slow burner that took a bit of time to get gear and story - plus the stuff you ended up getting was pretty cool. If anything your description of the second game fits the first game far more considering it tries to do so much in such a short run time where most of the game tries too hard and falls flat.

Man, if Homefront: The Revolution was actually finished and totally working as originally intended, it probably would have been a huge hit, and we'd probably be seeing a sequel releasing right about now, here in 2021 with next Gen consoles. There's some really cool ideas in the original concept for it, you can see what they were going for and how original and fresh it would have been.
@InfernalMonsoon
@InfernalMonsoon 3 роки тому
While it sucked that the game released broken and unfinished, the game nowadays is extremely polished with near enough every issue and fault completely erased and is a great game today. Sadly the stigma of the original Homefront and how The Revolution released is putting people off trying it despite everything it does so well.
@treefingers1183
@treefingers1183 3 роки тому
@@InfernalMonsoon I tried it a while back in like 2019 when it was in that "finally totally fixed state", and yeah while it's polished of the bugs and game-breaking stuff, the core gameplay and design is still a mess and not something I'd expect them to fix like bugs. The original guerilla warfare concept is almost completely non-existent. It just feels like a far cry/crysis game with more restrictions on how you can approach dispatching enemies. The original ideas of emergent gameplay through using gadgets, stashes in the world to restock... All those ideas are kind of half-baked, sadly.

Kudos to Dambuster Studios for not abandoning their game!

I do question people who insist The Revolution is somehow still a buggy mess and that the original is better. Either they're so out of touch and don't do basic research or they just refuse to give the game a real shot to begin with. The Revolution nowadays is far better than the original in every conceivable way and is way more interesting than people give it credit for.

Homefront Revolution, to me, is one of the most underrated games you can get for under 10$ The game was like 80% off a month after coming out, it was an incredible deal. Edit: I would like to add, that it's true that the story for homefront didn't really make sense. However I always thought it would work better if there was a touch of sci-fi (especially in revolutions). They should have had it that the Korean people discovered some sort of Alien tech that they used to have a quick jump in technology. this way it would explain how they first conquered the US and how they maintained a technological edge in Revolutions.

Great video! I’ve just discovered the channel a couple of weeks ago, and I’ve been going through the archives since! I’ve got a of story about _Homefront,_ even if I’ve never played it. If I paid attention right, the game was released in 2011. My wife and I used to shop at a certain GameStop location. It was a great store: my wife actually buys and plays more games than I do, but not only did the store manager know my wife’s tastes so well, he made sure to keep a new NIS published game available for her at all times, knowing that she’d be looking for it! He even got to understand me-introducing me to the _XCOM_ reimagined game, maybe one of my favorite games that I’ve played. But our favorite GameStop had suddenly closed down permanently with no notice at all, and one employee, when I later asked him about the story behind that closing intimated that the store manager who we liked so much was given a choice: either work at another GameStop as a part-time employee or walk. He walked. This would have been in 2012 or 2013- _XCOM_ for PS3 was released in 2012, and I think that’s the last game I bought at that store. And so, we shopped other, far lesser GameStops-at least for awhile.* At one of these, I noted the cover to _Homefront,_ and read the back of the box, and called the premise pure balderdash. I was and am something of a news junkie, and I didn’t believe there was any way in hell that its conventional military could be a threat to the US, and I said so. If you’re not convinced, check out this link to a 2014 article about the difference between North Korea and its neighbors. That country might have ballistic missiles these days, but its human cost is tremendous: www.nationalgeographic.com/pages/article/140226-north-korea-satellite-photos-darkness-energy Anyway, I must have made my opinion known too loudly, when the GameStop employee on duty at the time went a bit bat-nuts, trying to talk over me about how the game makers made a plausible case for North Korea being a major superpower, etc., etc… We walked out, having bought nothing. *About our last days dealing with latter-day GameStop: my wife, as I said, the more serious gamer of two of us, wasn’t taken seriously as a gamer because she was, you know, a girl-and we both skewed older than the evident usual GameStop customer; we were often asked what our kids were looking for instead of what we might’ve wanted! It got worse: one day a desperate salesperson truly chased my wife around the store, insisting my wife absolutely positively needed expert GameStop help! And I almost started fistfights with two belligerently pushy GameStop employees. We might not have been in a GameStop for at least five years…

While effective, it was handled with the subtlety of a sledgehammer, was too in your face and it did it so much that all effect was lost. There are a lot of people who like it, but overall it's more of a niche game. With some interesting concepts and themes, but it doesn't quite take off. And a very entertaining multiplayer, but it's still just an improved copy of CoD with some BF elements. Something like Spec Ops, but not at the same level.
@xhungryyetix
@xhungryyetix 3 роки тому
For it being a brand new IP from essentially an indie dev with real funding during the height of Call of Duty's dominance in the shooter market, 2mil copies over only a few months is objectively a big rise. There was a lot of hype for what the series could become now that they had their foot in the door, the sequel would make or break the series, and it killed it. If a second Homefront had been more successful than the first, it would have cemented itself as a household name in the context of shooters.

The first game can be skipped as it's nothing more than a typical CoD clone.
