Mike thank you for this video! I've been soldering for decades but not often enough to develope good skills. I never had training and your info has helped me up my game. Thank you so much!

Nice Video. This brings back some hobby fun memories with dear old dad many moons ago. Speaking of NASA, if I remember correctly, the main concern is air pockets in solder joints. .... because they explode in space. 14psi inside the solder vs a vacuum outside the solder and bang ! And that could be enough to end the mission. Keep up the good work Mike. I love watching your CB repairs.

I bought a nice little soldering kit about three years ago on Amazon for like $18. It has an iron with a half ass temperature control, an assortment of tips,, a sucker, tweezers, solder, and a nice wire stripper with punch down tool.

Nice tutorial. You almost sound like the guy on the pace videos. I watched the pace vids several times. My soldering skills are great now and thats due to these videos and lots of practice. Thanks

Mike, I like those glass fibre brushes for cleaning boards. But do you remember when you were in high-school and you had to draw diagrams or any engineering drawing in Chinese ink, with Rotring or Steadler pens? They sold special rubbers to erase that sort of ink... those are THE ideal thing to clean a board like this with.... Best thing : no liquids! Comes up shining like a bride on her wedding night ! Kisses! Paddy

gh778jk Pace the soldering equipment people make different abrasive eraser pens for this. I have them but prefer the fiberglass pens. Just a personal preference.

Great video. Thanks a lot. Is 0.8 mm diameter good for replacing audio jack on laptop mother board? how you decide about size other than using common sense?

Where might we be able to find that Ersin multicore solder at ? Not much luck searching for it.
@mikesradiorepair6 років тому
+NMG Just do a Google search or check any electronics supplier. Every electronics supplier I know of carries Multicore brand solder.
@RadioWhisperer5 років тому
You can find it on Amazon as well

whats a good heat to run most of the time mike on my soldering iron .
@mikesradiorepair7 років тому
There is no universal temp. I'm changing mine all the time depending on what I'm soldering and what type of solder I'm using. There can be several hundred deg. F. difference between solder type melting point. Basically you want to use just enough to do the job properly.

Very ne tutorial Mike. Well done. Now do I get that stack on money :-)
@mikesradiorepair7 років тому
LOL. Caught that did you. :) Someone had just picked up a radio before I started filming.
@TheRadioShop7 років тому
I spy money bro :-)

I caught it at the end as well lol helps to defray the cost of that soldering station. Oh man, $7k, wow. I just brought some no name station with an iron and a pump for $60 at a hamfest. I haven't even opened it yet. Lol

practice makes perfect i say. i been at it for sometime and even i get it wrong and have to redo it. i dont like redoing my work it's very frustrating.

The true gods of hand soldering would have been the people who worked in assembly lines back in the day before wave soldering machines took over. One reason I like working on vintage equipment, truely hand made/assembled. Hate to think how horribly they probably died after decades of sucking in soldering fumes for decades.
@Scott-K7sce7 років тому
agreed. maybe thats why i like my golden eagle mark 2 and a few other old items that arent some mass assembly line dudad i'm also looking into the hand done stringing to do up wires insted of using the modern zip ties gonna take some practice to get it right but worth the effort

+Scott Edick Dental floss works great for that. Also works great to repair old tube radios when you strip the cardboard tube in a IF can and the cores just spin in place and fall out. Just fold up 2-3 layers of dental floss the length of the IF can and slide it down in the tube. The ferrite core threads bite into the floss and fix it's back up and running with little work.
