Years of meticulous investigation by The Real News reporters Taya Graham and Stephen Janis have shown how the city of Baltimore siphoned hundreds of millions of dollars in public funds to corporate developers over a period of decades. With their findings now available in a full documentary, Taya and Stephen's investigative reporting has also spawned calls for an investigation from the State of Maryland, something which major unions in the state have also backed. Building on her previous coverage of the housing crisis engulfing the country, TRNN reporter Mel Buer speaks with Taya and Stephen on the relevance of their findings to understanding the role of property developers and municipal corruption in exacerbating the housing crisis.

Thanks for shining the light on the how we got to this housing crisis. As always, corporations and the government working with them, screwed us over. What a mess.

Too many voters in this country admire rich criminals & knowingly vote for them because they think it'll only hurt people they look down on. If a solution is suggested that actually helps the poor & middle class, they scream "socialism" & nothing changes.

In Glendale, CA, the city kicked out a bunch of family business owners to build a shopping center w/ apartments, "The Americana", between two existing shopping centers, "The Glendale Galleria" and "The Glendale Market Place". We didn't NEED more retail. They called the family businesses that served the working class community "blighted area" and put in fancy shops for the bourgeoisie. They gave the developer 15 years w/o property taxes. The rent for a one-bedroom apartment there is $3,500. US is an oligarchy. The governments are by the greedy rich & for the greedy rich, not the people.

Thank you for raising awareness on this crisis! It's an epidemic in Ontario, Canada right now. Welfare and disability cheques don't even come close too matching the inflation and rental costs making the rich-richer. I've worked full-time the majority of my life and faced fierce discrimination and persecution based upon my faith and beliefs. #God Bless 🙏✝️🙏

Thank you TRNN for using your podcast to shed light on this nation-wide issue. One day soon, I hope your investigative team can also shed light on the deadly tactics being used for mass illegal evictions. It involves pro bono legal services, and in Los Angeles city and county, the JUDGES OF THE CA SUPERIOR COURT. ❤

When the Feds find ways to help those who need help, the States use those "same programs" to help those who don't.

Or vice versa. My state now has a Tenants Union that restricts Landlords from raising rent at only 7% annually. It surely helps. My rent was increased 80% when the property was sold in 2021. It's put a huge strain on me, being retired. I don't know how young families survive. Our country is in serious trouble, yet it's well hidden in MSM propaganda and Wall Street financial tricks and PPTs, working collectively.

I remind you of Levitt/Levittown PA, Tenbytowne Delran NJ, as quality building sold genuinely to poor and is income "true affordability" to this who need housing NOT FOR THE UPPER MIDDLE CLASS TO PROFIT OFF HOUSING PURCHASE/RESALE

It called economy of scale. In fact go listen last year yo Medford Oregon council workshops one of the council members actually said that the rents needed to go up inorder to attract big developers. No more scale local developers. So you lose your local contractor workforce, the environmental non profits come in l9ck up your land or water or both amd then no housing is built, you have a housing crisis wondet how you got there and then big developers come it"worth their while finally" and everything that gets built is ugly over crowded and now you wonder why crime is going up. It is all so simple and a slowcreeping scamm

This is an excellent report. I realize some of it is extemporaneous, but please don’t repeat one of the errors du jour: “Him and his brother were living there.” I’m sure you’d never say, “Him was living there.” In the singular, the error is obvious, but in a compound (more than one person in the subject or direct object), people seem to invariably use the wrong pronoun. ‘Him’ is an object pronoun, so has no business being in a subject. He and his brother lived there because: He lived there & his brother lived there…and because ‘he’ is a subject pronoun. If grammar isn’t your thing, when in doubt, just take the other person out of the compound for a moment and try your chosen pronoun. If it works in the singular, it’s the correct one to use in the compound. Hope this is helpful.😇
