@TenAte108 small mammals dont have long lifespans. they usually live long enough to reproduce in numbers. they live a lot longer in human care than in the wild, so take some comfort from that

The majority come from their breeding facilities, which are essentially like puppy mills, but for ferrets. Marshall ferrets tend to be born traumatically, live in unsanitary conditions, are extremely inbred, spayed/neutered improperly or too early, and then sold to pet shops to be bought by people who don't know the first thing about ferrets, with many first time ferret owners not even realizing that they need specialized veterinary care and are not cage animals. Ferrets that come from independent breeders tend to be healthier and live a bit longer because the breeders do their best to add diversity back into the gene pool. Some of them even breed ferrets with european pole cats (which modern day domesticated ferrets are descended from).

my dad's first ferret was named lizzy. she was fully trained and was a psycho, he had dozens before my time but mostly spoke of her. he had old vhs tapes of her in a creek just doing her thing exploring on a leash. 2nd hand nostalgia.
