@ETophales

While tweaking will always get the best results, my real take from this, which I think is what's new about this investigation, is that just moving back one preset will usually get a significant performance boost with hardly an effect on quality. That's great news for those who don't care to tinker.

Yep, High is a great starting point for binary search through all the settings :) then set one setting Ultra and compare visuals + FPS, then reduce it until visual downgrade is too jarring. That's the fun part in my opinion. Anyone with the mindset to just set it and forget it more often than tweaking custom settings will probably be better off just getting a console. And I say that without any malice intent. Ever since I switched over to strictly PC gaming after playing on consoles for years, the options to tweak settings have to be something a person enjoy to do or every new game they play will feel more like a chore to optimize for their hardware instead of being an enjoyable experience.

As a small-time indie dev, I'm kinda glad you made this video. When I've implemented graphical settings, I've always thought to myself that I might as well let people set the render scale to 16x native if they want to, or render shadows at 16x normal resolution if they want to. It's literally zero skin off my back to just increase the max value of the slider, and I imagine many of the "ultra" settings come from a similar mindset. However, I've started noticing people who just max out everything without second thought, even though the maxima are just ridiculous settings, and then they come and complain that it doesn't perform well, so your point of "complaining about poor optimization at ultra settings" really hit home with me. It pains me, but I've started thinking that I probably have to start limit the maximum settings to "reasonable" values just to keep people from harming themselves.
@dennisjungbauer4467
@dennisjungbauer4467 2 роки тому
I think a good approach is to make somewhat reasonable decisions to push hardware and future-proof the graphics a bit, but if there's a lot of potential "harm", you can make it customizable via an INI file or such free of in-game boundaries. But I guess that depends on the engine you work with, how easy this can be done and if you want to spend the time for that. Also, resolution scale shouldn't be a part of the presets and default to 1x/100% and be adjustable separately. I assume most people just leave it like that and don't push the slider to max, like it's done for the preset.

That's absolutely true, and some game even warn you about it, like Kingdom Come for example. But that worked until last year. Now that you can't find a new GPU to buy, it's just depressing to look at these gorgeous games from my 980 Ti while knowing I will never get this kind of visual quality. I can't afford (and don't want to) pay scalper prices, and when I upgrade it will be for something better than my current 980 Ti, but anything above that GPU is still $500+ today while it's really a mid-range card these days. Entry-level and mid-ranged GPUs simply don't exist anymore. A brand new RX 590 was going for under 200$ two years ago, often under 150$ with good deals, now you can't find a used one under 300$, and you'd still need to be lucky for that as most are sold 400$+

In the days of yore, "Ultra" was a means for the developer to just push boundries, to see how far they could take it. Or so it seems when you look at older titles. But High could sometimes nearly double the framerate you got. hesedays, when you look at Ubisoft, they clearly label they intent for you to play at "High" settings, they always mention this on their spec sheet for games. In generall I have always felt games are optimized around the "High" preset, not Ultra. Ultra feels like a "Do waht you can without breaking it" kind of setting for developers.

I prefer going through each setting individually untill I find the perfect mix of quality and performance. It does take a bit more time but you only have to do it once per game so it's not too bad. I do it like this because not every single setting has the same impact on performance. For example anisotropic filtering won't be maxed out if I use a lower preset than ultra but 16x anisotropic filtering pretty much doesn't lower the performance while making the game look better. Also I usually don't like motion blur and selecting some preset often turns on the motion blur. One of many reasons why I prefer PC gaming is because I can play around with settings untill it's exactly how I like it.

They're not two-dimensional side-scrolling games that are fine at like 30fps or anything like that. - Games are much more made after "real life", even if it's fantastical, and it SHOULD basically be high-fidelity and high-performance. - There's nothing wrong with that, it's just how it should be, really. - Then again, expecting too much is indeed not good.

@@Jared-e Many people are influenced by marketing and hype and while some of us are more aware than others we are all effected by it if you consume media from channels like Digital Foundry or other channels that glamorize high end hardware, maxed out settings and ray tracing. You can often see the effects of hype and marketing in the comments section when people talk more about maxing out the settings and their hardware than the game and what they liked about it. There's a reason why hardware manufacturers make sponsored content with some of the bigger channels, why they send them their flagship for "review" well before the item goes on sale because influencers are a part of marketing today. I'm not saying there's anything wrong with wanting to max out graphics of course but what I'm saying is that you can enjoy a game and get immersed into it playing in high, medium or even low if you had no other choice. I'm sure that is going to drastically change once developers start learning real optimization techniques for the current gen consoles. But by the time those games start rolling out, PC hardware will have had a few more upgrades to overcome the lack of PC optimization, and the settings will still likely be comparable to medium or lower settings for the PC versions.

One little nit-pick - I'm not sure turning down settings creates less stress for your hardware, since you'll see a commensurate increase in frame rate to go with the lower settings. I would think the stress, and relative power draw, would be about the same. This kind of claim shouldn't be made without specific testing (like, monitoring GPU temps and power draw). But, like I said, it's a nit-pick to an otherwise stellar piece. Thanks!

Absolutely! I played CoD Modern Warfare on my old GTX980 (4GB). While Medium Settings with High Textures only use like 3,8 GB of VRAM going up to max settings needs around 7+ GB VRAM. And really, CoD is one of those games where most settings have almost no visual impact at all. Its funny to see people talking about games that need lots of VRAM while you can play it on old hardware with limited VRAM just fine. There are many games where you dont need to reduce Texture settings at all if you experience VRAM limitations. Dropping shadows one step is often enough to save like 0,5 - 1,0 GB of VRAM. Most people think textures are the thing that cost VRAM. But in fact shadows, object detail and draw distance need a lot of VRAM, too. So in parctice, if you choose settings suitable for your GPU ("all high" or on lower end "all medium" to have stable 60+ FPS) you most likely won't run into VRAM limitations or you can even push Textures back to High or Ultra.

The ultra settings are for when you buy a new gpu and you are all enthusiastic about it and crank everything to the max. After a while the honeymoon ends and rationality kicks in, so you lower them to high for more fps or for the same fps with less power consumption and noise. Personally I prefer optimized settings as sometimes the high preset drops some settings such as anisotropic filtering to x8 which is dumb as x16 has hardly any performance impact.

As far as I am concerned, ultra settings are for screenshots and benchmarking. Particularly in Cyberpunk where it's incredibly fun to run around taking cool screenshots. Otherwise, because motion is so high in most if not all games, the slightly improved graphics that ultra gives is rarely ever noticed outside of just seeing neutered frames. People only see the graphical improvements when they stop and just stare at open spaces trying to find the differences. Lol.

I think they do have their use especially for developers to flex an engines capabilities but I also think that we shouldn't bundle multiple aspects into 1 "Ultra" settings. Shadows for example can be broken down to draw distance, contact hardening, resolution, filtering, instead of just "Ultra". This would give players more room to configure instead of having to sacrifice certain aspects of shadows by dropping from just ultra to high. I've seen so many cases where dropping shadows from just ultra to high takes away soft shadows and dramatically decreases the filtering quality. This goes to other settings as well like reflections, lighting, post processing etc

Another great video. I am glad to hear the mention of a CPU bottleneck at the end of the video, this is a very important point to make. In a future video, I would love to see some tests where there is an intentional CPU bottleneck, with a reasonable mid-tier or low-end GPU like the GTX 16-Series or something similar that a budget oriented gamer may have in their system. I personally have an AMD Ryzen 3 1200 (14nm - not the 12nm AF refresh.) and a GTX 1050 Ti. In a lot of games, my CPU is actually the biggest bottleneck, and turning my settings down can create horrible stuttering and bad performance, where as turning my settings up to maximum - especially visual settings that utilise the GPU, can greatly improve performance and often fix the stuttering. I typically always try to make as much of a GPU bottleneck as possible. It usually helps, even if it does not give me a higher FPS it can fix the mentioned stuttering in most cases. Do note, my old Motherboard was a Gigabyte A320M-S2H (Revision.1). So my CPU was running at stock. I recently upgraded a few months ago to an Asus ROG Strix B450-F Gaming II, and my CPU is now running at 3.7Ghz OC. Just this small OC has massively improved a lot of the stuttering I previously experienced in a lot of games, and I no longer need to push the GPU so hard to get a playable experience - although - it would still be nice to see all of these things tested in a future video, if you could. Thanks. Keep up the amazing work!

@cerberusdaemon5867 Рік тому
@@dave7474 Yes I have been lucky enough to have quite a few upgrades since then. Currently I have a Ryzen 7 5700X and an RX 6750 XT. The uplift is obviously massive, and these days I game at 4K rather than 1080p like I used to. I could make a list of my upgrade path but I'm not sure if anybody is interested.

@cerberusdaemon5867
@cerberusdaemon5867 Рік тому
@@dave7474 That's right. I can also make use of higher FPS now without my CPU dying and making the entire system stutter. My Monitor is only 60Hz but that's fine, the latency reduction gained with higher FPS is still very nice. Plus I'll upgrade to a 144Hz 4K Monitor eventually. I think my next upgrade will be a Zen 5 16C/32T CPU (Likely named Ryzen 9 9950X) and an RX 8800 XT with hopefully over 20GB of VRAM. And 64GB system RAM. I currently have 32GB. My PC needs are not that of a typical user though. May sound a bit overkill for a gamer, but in all fairness I could still see an argument of that hardware being used purely for gaming in the not so distant future. :)

@excelsiusprime
@excelsiusprime 2 роки тому
It's a cool video, but most of the time presets don't actually set up everything on ultra, I mean even "ultra" presets have some settings on high and you can crank it up to real ultra manually, so you'll get some more noticeable differences in quality.
@Bogdin7
@Bogdin7 2 роки тому
Most people don't bother customizing their settings, they just click a preset and go. Having the "Ultra" setting only be kinda-sorta "Ultra" lets the game devs - who actually want their game to be playable regardless of how optimistic their players may be - chuckle a bit and say "Ha, yeah, here's your Ultra Setting, ya wank. Now just play the damn thing."

In my experience the general "Rule of Thumb" for game grafics settings is: Low: If you can´t get the game running or you are an max FramesPerSecond fetishist. Medium: "Time to Time" gamer or low bugged gamer who wants to enjoy the game in a comfortable state. High: Full Time, hobbiest gamer that wants to enjoy the game in all its glory. Very High/Ultra/etc.: Enthusiasts that want to enjoy the full pontential of the games they play and/or the game is 5 Years old and your midrange GPU is getting bored on high settings.

I always set games to max settings and work back as needed. If I can get 60fps I'm happy and will only lower settings if it dips below that. 1080ti/10600k here @1080p single or 5760x1080 triples for sim racing.

Ultra on Cyberpunk and many other games is just 1.5 myopia mode, things close are still the same, things far away or on the side are blurry, and that's it.

Ultra settings can be worth it though when your graphics card is powerful enough to run ultra settings at native resolution while your monitor has low refresh rate and thus can't take advantage of the higher FPS from high settings without screen tearing.

it really depends on game. And on your hardware. And other stuff. But also it's funny because I feel its mostly because of testing channels, like yours, that (almost) always tests on max settings that set the standard that its needed/expected to play on

not to mention sure you may notice the changes when switching back and fourth looking for differences, but when in the action of the game, last thing you are worried about is reflections in the puddle on the ground
@mikeonlinux5491
@mikeonlinux5491 2 роки тому
Maybe, but it all adds up to the general ambiance of the game. Sure, in the middle of a gunfight you won't notice these reflections in the puddles, but when you are actually walking around and taking in the atmosphere, trying to pretend you are living in that game world, these reflection help to get even more immersed.

Fantastic video. Game developers should really encourage people to use High settings. Maybe add a prompt for ultra that says: "Sacrifice lower framerate for minor visual improvement,". Really. Maybe benchmarks should also start to use high instead of ultra.

@@thetechnocrat6388 I do too, but its easy to think Ultra gives and Ultra boost to visuals. It really doesn't, and in games its usually hard to compare side by side. Better then to give a prompt so that people won't needlessly complain about performance.
