There is a lot of talk about TD018 and flexible front wings being responsible for Aston Martin's loss of form... but what exactly does a flexible front wing do for performance? So far, I've not seen anyone even come close to trying to describe this.
In this video, I'll explain what TD018 means for car performance, then look at the performance characteristics with telemetry data, and try to see if maybe Aston Martin was playing some tricks at the start of the season...

There is a huge framerate drop after changing from external shots (from the races, etc) to the headshots (when you talk directly to the camera) or vice versa. Love the analysis and appreciate the hard work put into it... There were two things I had heard talked about as well with Alonso Martin F1 team I mean Aston... 1st that they made a philosophy change after Monaco, it wasn't said what but maybe this is what changed not the directive. They also said later that they went in the wrong direction with their development. So maybe parts expected to do one thing in practice were doing something different. 2nd... Going off what ive heard from others Alonso Martin F1 team... damn it I mean Aston Martin have continued to improve relative to themselves but at a slower rate then the teams around them making their relative speed slower. Just wondering if you had looked into either of these explanations as well and if so what you may have found. Keep up the amazing work!

In my experience designing tunnels, they are highly sensitive to the flows upstream of them. You might start with a simulation, a simple 3D graph showing utilized ride heights. Based on that, you might design a floor that, at lower ride heights, does not expect its upstream flow to behave in a certain way. You choose the compromises and then find yourself knocked off the mountain. As the video says, you might be out of the mechanical setup window, but it could be worse. The tunnels might end up really sensitive to a front-wing angle that simulations did not predict. The same can be said for the coupling of the rear wing; you might end up running a different and more aggressive rear-wing angle to recover lost rear downforce or to rebalance a now higher-angle front wing. So, from my experience, with a flexible front wing and a tunnel car, you might find yourself not just out of a mechanical setup window but also outside of an aerodynamic synergy design characteristic. You probably could have designed for this, but you didn't expect it and will need time to re-optimize.

It's almost like you missed the most important 6 minutes of the video. If it wasn't easy enough to digest, let me know. Sometimes these topics are a bit much.

@@brrrake Look, i don't want to be a downer. I already knew about the effects of flexy wings. People who watch these videos likely do too. I know you are working a video here and this is the established formula. This is not on you in particular. It's just this video format is tiring and i did watch your video. Usually i just downvote and close it when the story from the begging of time comes (i call that when videos go on a tangent and explain where someone was born, what they did when they were children and then get to the point. In your case, you came and talked about flexy wings and how they work before you explained your take. You were not a big offender. You and everyone has to conform to the format. My push is against the format. Hopeless as it might be.

I have no idea what he is talking about. This lacks a proper definition of the various types of wings and the actual effects. Throwing random diagrams doesn't help.

I get the sentiment, but this video feels really clickbait-y. Aston Martin has had a drop in performance, true, but singling out the flex wing regulations as the culprit is a bit misleading. The season's not even done; they're still solidly in the midfield after the Japanese GP and are obviously gearing up for 2024. Plus, the winter break will give the FIA a chance to dig deeper. So while the flex wing might be a factor, it's unfair to lay all the blame there, especially when the title and thumbnail make it seem like it's the sole reason.
@brrrake

It's called a thumbnail and a title. I can't put 30 things there. I always do my best to make a well rounded video, then people watch the whole thing and still moan. 🥴 especially frustrating when I do everything I can to actually share insight whereas 99% of the other channels just post nonsense.

@@brrrake I completely understand the need for eye-catching titles and thumbnails; it's part of the game. I actually enjoy your content and find it insightful especially since there are not a lot of good technical channels about F1 on youtube, but it was just personal feedback ☺️

@@Galadonin I totally understand you're POV but if I made the content the way I wanted to make it, I think very few people would watch it and I'd probably alienate most of the audience 🫠 I get it.
