In this video, we answer the question, Is HDR on Samsung devices broken by design?
We tested the Galaxy S24 Ultra against the Pixel 8 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro to explore all the intricacies of how Samsung interferes with the original content to achieve what they feel is a more immersive final result, with some mixed results.

I also realized yesterday my S21U was brighter when I watch HDR videos in UKposts. Since I almost never watch HDR videos, I didn't focus on it. Nice work.

My main issue with the S23 Ultra was its HDR performance and how it handle bright scenes. And brightness changes are visible. For instance if suddenly a bright scene came then display will start adjusting brightness instead of it being seamless. I wanted to try S24 Ultra display because I hoped they would have fixed the issue and in S23 Ultra I checked for this change on every monthly updates.

I went from a S21U to a S23U and I noticed video issues too. Especially when the sun is either rising or setting when you are indoors I found this gets worse if you used the eye comfort shield option and or extra dim options. I had a bixby routine that was dimming the screen as the day went on but videos were definitely darker and more annoying during a dimly lit room scenario I can sometimes see a visual jump depending on how the ambient light was hitting the front camera

Thanks for raising this issue, it’s an actual issue on most android phones, especially ones without Dolby Vision. You have manually put brightness to max in hdr content most of the time in most android phones

Isn't there an option in the UKposts app to force the brightness to maximum for HDR videos? Also, Samsung should let their ego down and give Dolby Vision on all their devices, even cheap Xiaomi phones come with Dolby Vision displays nowadays.

I noticed something was a bit weird when I switched to my new Galaxy S24 Ultra from a Galaxy S21. I absolutely love this phone, but HDR was weird. I also noticed it would dim more than I was used to in indoor situations, whether watching videos or just using the phone. I find myself reaching for the brightness slider. This is a bummer, I hope Samsung adjust it to work better. Choosing a phone requires waying the pros and cons of a given device. No phone is perfect. Samsung get so much of the other stuff right on the Galaxy S24 Ultra that I do not regret my purchase.

HDR straight up doesn't work at all when watching videos on YT when I bought the S24U at launch. I don't care if Google or Samsung that needed to fix the problem it's the fact that a $1300 phone couldn't get HDR to work out the box irked me enough to return it on top of the defective screen that plagues the S24 series. In a lot of HDR dark scenes, the s24 seems to have a black/grey crush, the step shade is so harsh. This reminds me of the Galaxy Note 2's black crush. A great example of this is the 4k hdr batman lougne fight scene in about 17seconds. Dim areas are bright grey. Does not happen on my note 10+, s22 ultra and on my oled tv

It seems like a thing with a lot of other Samsung phones/tablets as well. I have the S20+, S22 Ultra, S24 Ultra, and Tab S8. HDR used to be the brightest on the S20+. After a few updates, it no longer looks bright enough. The S22 Ultra and Tab S8 had poor HDR from the start. Right now, the S24 Ultra looks slightly better than the others, but not as good as the S20+ was before Samsung messed it up with an update.

I don't get it. At the end the opinion is that Samsung wants to make the image more and more bright but earlier it talks about the video becoming less bright. Also if Adaptive Brightness is bad and the issue, wouldn't it "off" be similar to a "Filmmaker on"? It's even in the quick settings for brightness. So personally I think I'd keep it on as the majority of my time is spent with changing lighting conditions (and I want to see in sunlight, or not get blinded when I'm inside). The time I watch a movie for 1 hour+ straight I'll just flick that switch.

I noticed this issue too on my S23U when I first got the phone last year. But it wasn't until in December 2023 that work provided me with an old iPhone 12. At first, I was shocked that more often than not, I preferred consuming any sort of media (YT, Netflix, TikTok, IG, etc.) on my work phone, despite the smaller, non-OLED panel. I couldn't quite put my finger on it, but to my eye, it just seemed like my brand-spanking new S23U's display wasn't as bright/colorful/beautiful to look at, compared to a 4-year old panel!!! And even when I compared it to my previous phone, the N10+, I still more often than not preferred the image/media on my N10+ than on my S23U. Thank you for figuring out the issue. Hope Samsung in the future would push an update like the FilmMaker mode you suggested. It really throws me off that supposedly Samsung S series should have the best display panels, but not always the best viewing experience. Real shame.

A tech that is basically behind the competition, 8 bit vs 10 bit panel, with a pretty average eye protection compared to what's been achieved otherwise, deserves to be called the BEST display? On what merit? because of the anti-reflectiveness, which may or may not be related to these problems? Oops (not that this matters so much), not even the brightness is industry leading, barely looks brighter than s23 ultra (some reviews, s23 ultra appeared brighter). How can you be behind the competition and still be crowned the best?

So this is basically just one of the granules of ice that is the tip of the iceberg that is Samsung devices, my biggest gripe is that cell phone carriers do not offer anything higher than 256 or 512 gigabyte models. I went through 512 gigs on my s23 in 5 months. Since then I've been teetering around 10 gigs of space every other day. Thankfully I'm a phone hoarder and I can experiment on what apps I want to keep on my Note 10 while I try to get my stuff together on my 23 before I pick up my 24 Ultra. But here's the real issue now companies are mandating that user privacy data is no longer going to be stored in the cloud and it's going to be stored on the user's phone. I wonder how long it's going to take before 1 terabyte becomes the basic standard because our phones are going to be full of our own stuff. I understand the whole privacy concern but that's only because people are overly concerned about their privacy, which in some cases they should be, but if you're doing it right, you shouldn't be and you should opt out of in device storage. I am pretty certain that this screen problem showing HDR content, is also to do with the anti-reflective covering on the screen which of course is now completely flat, unlike the Samsung galaxy s23 ultra which has a slight curve. I have heard many people talking about this. The flat screen now being of course anti-reflective in my opinion has absolutely ruined Samsung's reputation for great screens. The S23 ultra is far better, far brighter, much more deeply saturated and much better suited to HDR content when it does not alter the particular brightness or saturation levels due to the ambient light situation that may be in in any given moment in time. Because the S23 ultra doesn't have the anti-reflective screen coating like the s24 ultra does, in my opinion it is far more immersive and a much better screen experience. I have the Samsung galaxy S21 ultra at the moment, however, I am going to upgrade to the S23 ultra. I am going to give the s24 ultra a complete miss. Yes the S24 ultra has the Qualcomm 8 gen 3 processor - and the S23 ultra has the 8 Gen 2, but in a real life scenario it makes very little difference unless you're an absolute tech nerd. They have taken the optical zoom down to ten times in the galaxy S23 ultra to five times in the Samsung galaxy s24 ultra as well. So saying all of this, in my humble opinion the s24 ultra apart from the processor is a downgrade. All of the ridiculous hype about the AI capability will only be freely available until 2025, and subsequently at that particular time, we will have to purchase that from Samsung. My mind is made up now, I am definitely going to get the s23 ultra as an upgrade to my S21 ultra. Thank you for your videos, and keep up the great work. Subscribed. 👏...

I gave up on Samsung after 7 years of using only their flagships. Even without considering the price, it's just too many compromises. I mean, display has issues. Camera software is terrible. One UI isn't as polished as it could be. Vibration is too soft and weak. Speakers are worse compared even to older Samsung devices. You spend your time waiting and hoping for updates that will magically fix everything (does not happen) and right before you know it - it's time for new model to be presented and more then often, "old" (last years) one is crippled with software updates. I hope that "I'm fine with my device" users will become more demanding in future.

I wonder if he actually turned on video brightness under advanced and video settings which is were you can actually control the videos screen brightness.

I just watch videos on my phone with adaptive brightness, QHD, and 4K. I set moms iPhone to basically the same settings and we both agree my S24U looks better than her 14PM

How is it broken when you didn't turn on bright video setting? It's a video power saving setting.

I just found out that one of the only ways to disable HDR is to enable "Power Saving" mode which isn't practical, I wish they had an option or switch in the settings.

This is a very subjective review. How did you test it? Of course, Samsung will just respond with a generic answer, just like how you guys will answer this comment-a generic one.

looll u gotta redefine your meaning of hdr ... hdr wasn't never meant to brighten up scenes but to proper expose them rightfully to how it was originally filmed .. unbelievable

This S24 Ultra is pure junk, I'm sad I didn't return it when I could. Shitty camera, useless audio zoom feature, grainy display, problems in rendering HDR... And when I call Samsung they just tell me it's how it is supposed to be. This is the third Samsung item that gives me problems, my S6 watch classic 47mm stopped charging after 4 days (they sent me another one and it's ok), bought a 35l microwave and plate was not turning smoothly (they sent me a new piece with wheels), my first S24 Ulrra had deep scratches under the black screen protector from factory (they sent me another one). No more Samsung for me, their quality is down the drain.

While it sucks that this isn't working as it should for those that use it. I personally think HDR video brightness is a gimmick and a lie. If you're indoors the regular brightness is just fine, HDR brightness just sears your damn retinas and throws the colors way off by adding white light to every lit pixel group. Totally not necessary, I turn it off wherever I can

I just tested my S22 Ultra next to my S24 Ultra and the HDR looked better on my s24 at least to my eye.

This is not a problem. Infact I'm happy that samsung has done this now. It adjusts the eotf tracking based on ambient light. It exists in iPhone ever since iPhone 12. Infact, samsung is only catching up to iPhone. But the key difference between samsung and iPhone and why samsung goes for dimmer presentation is because it adapts a dynamic eotf tracking based on the content Max CLL. This will preserve the highlight detail at the cost of overall APL. Modern televisions offer a way to enable/disable this feature of hdr10 content. Phones don't.
