This week, I headed to check out an abandoned CASTLE in Texas. A castle that a couple just invested their life savings into! When I heard of this, I had to take a trip down. So in this video, I packed up my stuff from Cerro Gordo and headed to see what this castle was all about!

We are so glad that he purchased this landmark! I live minutes away from it. Our biggest fear has been that it would all be torn down and turned into an apartment complex like so much else in these areas between Houston and Galveston. Our trees disappear overnight and cookie cutter houses and community development spring up quicker than Dollar generals across the landscape. Many of us in this community are breathing a sigh of relief now that we know at least a minute preservation will occur! 6 acres may not be a lot of property, but it is truly a spot we wish for the next generation to see!

I would put a temporary roof with galvanized tin. You definitely can make a very light roof that will let you focus on the structure inside. Build a structure like rv's use to park under to protect the rv. He can probably get a company that builds these for rv's to build it for you if you advertise their company. I'm afraid if you don't address that roof you will just be working against yourself. This property definitely needs to be saved and restored. Good luck brother 🙏
@brandie976
@brandie976 Рік тому
That's a great idea!
@igotursixx2665
@igotursixx2665 Рік тому
@@myname744 correct and you need to protect that and let the whole roof and inside of the house dry. You would put up a temporary roof by cementing polls in the ground outside of the building. Then gor lack of a proper word you buld a dome over the castle out of canvas waterproof canvas. Yes this will be costly but you can offset the cost by advertising for the company that puts it up. You have to stop the leaking before you can do anything inside. Like I said think in the lines of what RV's park under when you store them. It has a roof and that's it all the sides are open. This will give you time to dry the house out and keep it from getting worse. If you don't address the roof first your just going to waste time because everything you do will get wet also. So put a protective dome will let you address everything when you can and prevent further damage. Plus the castle can dry out and you need to dry everything before rebuilding anyway

@My Name Yup. I bought a rental property back in 2014 with a flat roof. The previous owners added a new additional sloping roof on top of the original. That did mitigate the problem but not entirely. Every year during fall/winter it's the same story with a new leak popping up. I've had roofers come out but they all said the roof is in brand new condition. They've run water tests but can't pinpoint any vulnerable areas. It only occurs after days of prolonged rain. Water is such a devastating force. It will find a way in eventually. With a flat roof it's only a matter of time.

At first, I thought this was a mistake in the feed for this channel, but after watching the whole thing, I realize it was not. This episode surprisingly resonated, as Brent likes to say, with me due to my past restoring an 1849 brownstone in an old section of Brooklyn, New York. I couldn’t help but chuckle at the weird affect the 1970s left on our old Victorian building. It was in ruinous shape much like this castle in Texas when we bought it, but we were able to restore it and recently sold it off before moving to Texas. Much like Cerro Gordo for Brent, our old homestead was an adventure, but like Brent, we loved every minute of it, and have nothing but fond memories of the whole, insane adventure!

Amid intense opposition to becoming part of Hitchcock, residents began a petitioning effort to incorporate the area into a new city." I'm surprised Hitchcock didn't launch a "special operation".

Excitement level 5/5, so I clicked. After picking up my jaw on the floor when I find out it's not a castle, but a poorly built house with improper roof drainage. -1/5 OOF size -- Large. I'm only at the :40 second mark, so let me watch the rest of the video and chime back in. Watched the rest. My heart goes out to these people. I was really hoping my first assessment was wrong, but I'm sorry to say I don't see this ever getting repaired. If it was built like a castle it wouldn't have been as difficult, to repair. Sadly it just looks a house in extreme disrepair with some castle-esque elements stuck to the outside. I hope they do what makes them happy. I'd love to see that place repaired. It's crazy to read the comments and see how many people are personally familiar with the place.

You’ve been an inspiration Brent. My wife and I started our first (and last) home renovation a year and a half ago. We downsized June of 2021 to be mortgage free! Our child had finished grad school and was living on her own so we didn’t need a big house. We’ve done nearly all the renovations ourselves. They were mostly cosmetic but still challenging. My wife has painted literally every surface of our house except the floor. I’ve repaired termite damage, installed pocket doors and replaced all of the light switches and plugins and laid vinyl plank flooring throughout the house. Even installed GFCI plugs! It’s been a very tiring adventure but we’re almost done. The kitchen countertops were installed two days ago and we were thrilled! Doing without the simple things really makes you appreciate them more! Looking forward to more of your videos! Stuart

This castle is indeed a huge undertaking. For those interested in restorations of the extreme kind on château’s and similar- also see “Escape to rural France”, Dan has taken on a chateau which is basically a skeleton. He absolutely loves this building and is doing a great job. Not to take away from this this vlog, to be sure. But rather mention a similar project on big and cool old chateau project underway. Dan has a lot of brick and stone work to do on this building. One more thing- this castle in Texas is loaded with symbology. “When humanity learns the language of symbolism a great veil will be lifted from their eyes” ~ Manly P. Hall

I'm so glad someone has bought it that wants to restore it. This video was fascinating to me because I've always wanted to see the inside. It's even more amazing than I thought it would be. I wish I had the money to donate to Ian to restore it. I'll be praying that he finds the funds to do that. It'll be a sad thing if he doesn't. I was told years ago that the 2 horses at the gate were real horses that were favorites of the original owner. I was told when the horses died, the original owner had them encased in concrete or plaster out of love. Is there any truth to this rumor?

I have a suggestion for Ian. In TX, & probably other states, we have 'adopt a section of highway'. Perhaps he could accept sponsorships to 'adopt' a room or section of the castle, even a window or faucet. Each contribution or contributor could be entitled to that amount of discount off a night's stay once the castle is completed. This is the first thing that came to my mind & I'm only 7:30 into the video :) Or maybe he could schedule 'group' workdays at the castle. Or possibley be used by wood shop, welder, plumber or other such trades for teaching students 'how to' while also serving to help restore the castle. TXRX might be a great resource to contact! Owner could dedicate certain areas, rooms, or working sections to the school(s)/teacher(s) who taught & restored items. He is just down the road from Houston so I would think there would be a lot of interest to participate in such an endeavor by various groups or individuals. Good luck to you Ian & Mrs. Ian!! Thanks Ghost Town Living for bringing this to our attention! (This is also the first time I have seen your channel :)

Hey Brent I have a suggestion! For Cerro Gordo history recording, maybe set up a GIS database. It would allow you to record events, findings, zone areas of geographic features or differences, and you will be able to view spatial relationships of events and data in and around Cerro Gordo. Furthermore, I'd explore the option to have a drone operator come in and survey a big buffer around the property for accurate mapping. You could use that as a base map for the Cerro Gordo database and graphic display, and also produce local height maps, height line maps, DSM raster and you could use it for exploration like you did with the washes. Thanks for the wonderful content and amazing job on this piece of history!

@AvanaVana
@AvanaVana Рік тому
I’ve also commented something similar, but also suggested he hook up the GIS DB to a free (with internal donations?) “Cerro Gordo” iOS and Android app that lets visitors use it both as a map to explore the property, but also plots all the original locations of artifacts found spread out across the land that now reside in the museum, as well as all points of interest. He could also use augmented reality to show an overlay of these data points on the users’ screens when they hold up their cameras. Additionally, users could visualize the layout of the mines beneath their feet or through the hills with AR. Self-guided tours could be another top-level feature of the mobile app, complete with Brent’s narration either as audio or as more videos! I imagine the self-guided tour as a multi-part video in the history of Cerro Gordo with waypoints that are activated by QR codes at each stop. Each stop in the app could display museum-style signage/wayside exhibits/interpretive displays/extra information in the app, without having to build out extensive physical exhibits that require maintenance in the harsh climate and ruin the ambience. The app could potentially also manage booking for the future hotel or guided tours.

I've given him a few suggestions to get started before - so I know the idea is in his head. However, as someone who is mid-level management for a national firm who does exactly this kind of mapping and asset management for developers/cities/companies (a few Fortune 500's) his eyes would probably bug out of his head when he got the estimate. This kind of detailed mapping takes a lot more manhours than you'd initially think! The property is too big for most drone platforms - but you could probably fly with manned aerial/high density lidar for 20-40k. That's just the tip of the iceberg however, because then you have to post-process, extract features and data, and maintain the databases - it just doesn't make financial sense on a place like this...not to mention even the best resolutions will only resolve to 6-inches or so per *pixel*. Smaller records like the bottles and stuff would always be manual entry. There are some open source software packages that will do some low-level collection (such as geotagging photos, etc) but you couldn't do the 3D mapping and in-depth pretty exhibits that would get you the "bling" factor. Right now his money is much better spent elsewhere on the project.
@Ericsaidful
@Ericsaidful Рік тому
I'd also recommend a Lidar scan if you could. Lidar will show minute differences on the ground which may uncover old structures that aren't there anymore and will provide a map of the town. Then you can do an overlay on a GIS map and mark out where different buildings were around the town.

What an amazing place. Some of the detail work is incredible! As someone who has done a great deal of renovation over the years, I very strongly suggest that you look into the torch-on rubber roofing to seal the place from getting anymore water damage and rot. There isn't much point doing the work inside, if it's only going to get soaked. After the rubber roofing is done, then you can repair the inside. The rubber roofing can always be covered with a more historical type of tile or shingle at a later date, but you must protect the inside while you work on it.

When someone like me comes from Denmark, I know everything about damp in buildings. Damp in buildings is the worst, and almost impossible to get rid of if it is not done properly. He will have to get control of the moisture before the whole castle is affected. When he gets the castle built, he must have a moat around it and a drawbridge.

What a beautiful piece of history he saved from a wrecking ball! It looks like it would be an amazing backdrop to an outdoor wedding or any kind of an event place. Is it possible to contact the local theater Group that put on, lShakespeare in the Parks” and maybe have them perform in front of the castle? This place sounds historically special. I’m surprised that the historic society hasn’t stepped up to help them research this quirky Texan Castle! I know it definitely would be a fascinating place to look into and obviously look towards the past so we can have the story in the future! It would be interesting to find out if there is any funds that can be collected for Hurricane damage to use for the restoration. It's been through a few. Wondering if it's possible to put plastic sheeting on the roof to prevent rain from coming in and causing more damage. Also, I believe there is some kind of historical restoration fund (don't know if it's still available but worth looking into) you have to apply for in Austin. I would check the local historical foundation club if there is one. I spoke with some older people in Crockett Tx Historical foundation and they gave me that information a few yrs ago. I believe resources are there, and people love helping projects like this.

Brent, your love of history, preservation of anything old i.e., newspapers, bottles, bottle pieces and fragments, old jeans found in the mines etc., is truly awe inspiring! I loved that you were curious of the date on the newspaper in the plaster work! That is something that i love doing and seeing as well. A few years ago, i had the opportunity to dig around a old home here in Salt Lake city, and on the sill of the foundation of this house, i had found a box of old Salt Lake Tribune newspapers dated from the 1920's to the 40's. They were in a box that was covered and buried in the dirt. Along with a gift box of a strand of pearls from old Z.C.M.I. Department store! The owner had never dug around down there ti know that that stuff was there! At any rate, you are truly inspiring for alot, and i mean ALOT of people to live vicariously, like myself through you! God bless you and all the work you do, and have done at Cerro Gordo, to provide a visual portal, if you will to let us see, and watch your life, your passion, and dreams!!!! My guess there are some really old concrete structures in southern Texas Gulf coast area. Many are from the 1800. You have to look at the reinforcement steel to get an idea of when parts were built. I stayed in an early 1900s "hurricane proof mansion back in the 1980's, while working at a summer camp. Sadly that house was demolished and a metal building was erected on its site, because rehabilitation of reinforced concrete structures can be really expensive and takes special knowledge and tools. It really does take a community to pull off a restoration. Thank you for taking us along on your adventure.

Brent. Your channel intrigues me greatly. In 1980, Ontario Canada We bought an old 1 room schoolhouse. I had great history with this building as it was my fathers Chain Saw repair shop as I was growing up. It had been sold out of the family a sat empty for a few years when I got the chance to buy it back. When we came to the building shortly after closing the deal it had a 3' snow drift from one west facing window right into the middle of the room. After a few years of renovations it became a cozy home. Its been our home since and we are still here. So yes follow your dreams but be careful as you suggest in your solid advise at the end of this video. Good luck to you mate. Your enthusiasm is infectious.
