The incredible bravery shown by 1st Lt Jimmie W Monteith is the stuff of legend. On D-Day, 6 June 1944, near Colleville-sur-Mer, France. 1st Lt. Monteith landed with the initial assault waves. According to his Medal of Honor citation he "moved up and down the beach reorganizing men for further assault. He then led the assault over a narrow protective ledge and across the flat, exposed terrain to the comparative safety of a cliff. Retracing his steps across the field to the beach, he moved over to where 2 tanks were buttoned up and blind under violent enemy artillery and machinegun fire. Completely exposed to the intense fire, 1st Lt. Monteith led the tanks on foot through a minefield and into firing positions"
The beat of the brave heart of Virginia was brought to a tragic end in the green fields of France.
Jimmie W. Monteith now rests in the American Cemetery in Normandy, a fallen hero among many. His cross is emblazoned with a golden star and the inscription “Medal of Honor.”
The medal would be delivered to his mother during a simple ceremony in her home. She placed it next to a picture of Jimmie she kept on her mantel.

i went to the Normany American cemetery, it was very impressive seeing all those crosses. Sadly I Havent seen 1st Lt Jimmie W Monteith's cross, that same day i also went to omaha beach. To be honest, the beach wasn't anything special. But the thought of just walking there on a peaceful beach, knowing that so many young men fought and died there, its just so surreal.

I see Yarnhub made the same mistake as Spielberg. Those wooden logs in the water are facing the wrong direction. They were used to flip landing craft over and sometimes had spikes/blades to tear holes in the craft, or mines to blow them up. Funnily enough the game he is plugging (Enlisted, which is a great game) models the fortifications on D-Day correctly.

My late Uncle Mick 1923 - 2018, took part in the Invasion of Normandy, in the third wave of military personnel on the 10th of June 1944. He saw things that no human should ever see, and fought all the way to Berlin, in May 1945. He always refused to talk about his experiences, I am certain he was very traumatized by what he had witnessed and lived through. Ironically he married a German woman Helene, they were together for 49 years. Amazing man.

MEDAL OF HONOR CITATION For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity above and beyond the call of duty on 6 June 1944, near Coleville-sur-Mer, France. 1st Lt. Monteith landed with the initial assault waves on the coast of France under heavy enemy fire. Without regard to his own personal safety, he continually moved up and down the beach reorganizing men for further assault. Monteith led the tanks on foot through a minefield and into firing positions. Under his direction, several enemy positions were destroyed. He then rejoined his company and under his leadership, his men captured an advantageous position on the hill. Supervising the defense of his newly won position against repeated vicious counterattacks, he continued to ignore his own personal safety, repeatedly crossing the 200 or 300 yards of open terrain under heavy fire to strengthen links in his defensive chain. When the enemy succeeded in completely surrounding 1st Lt. Monteith and his unit and while leading the fight out of the situation, 1st Lt. Monteith was killed by enemy fire. The courage, gallantry, and intrepid leadership displayed by 1st Lt. Monteith is worthy of emulation. Born: July 1, 1917, Low Moor, VA. Died: June 6, 1944, Normandy, France. Place of burial: Normandy American Cemetery, Colleville-sur-Mer, France.

Superb job as always. Bangalore torpedo is sometimes called a 'mine' by laymen, it was designated as the 'Bangalore Torpedo', usually referred to as just 'Bangalore' in combat. Such an amazing video❤ The storytelling was honestly amazing, qnd quite breathtaking at times. I feel like this is just something straight from history channel to be honest. Such an amazing video, beautifully made. Especially the part where everything went silent after he got hit

Huh, never knew that some of the Sherman DDs made it onto the beach. I thought they were all taken out whilst trying to land on the beach.

Only on one section did the DDs sink due to being launched to far out to sea

What I read in the old books is 2 making it to the beach with a LOT of luck, and one vessel could not lower the ramp so they sailed to the coast and landed like regular tanks. Also read a book about a second tank unit that were sent in on board the ship, but that was halfway fiction, written by a guy who crewed a tank and based the book on his own experiences, and most other events exactly match real history, so... Plausible...

@monza1002000 Рік тому
@@sjonnieplayfull5859 There were second wave tanks that all got to all the sectors of the beach. The only problem was the early release of the DDs destined for the middle sector. The B17s missing the beach by 5 miles didn't help either.

3:15 aren't those tank obstacles facing the wrong way? I think the same mistake was made in the movie Saving Private Ryan. I believe they're meant to face with the lower side facing water, so when tanks roll unto it it flips the tank (maybe also mines placed at the bottom if it). Can anyone else confirm?
