And then it basically re-affirms the description of 'awkward and unsociable', and creates a vicious cycle where socialising becomes ever more passively hostile and daunting? Reminds me a little of this but slightly different

My dad told me that if people start gossiping about me, they will see even the normal things about me as weird. And if they think I am weird they will bully and stop hanging out with me. In retrospect, my dad probably thought I was weird.

I have always been quite a shy person but when i was about 15 in high school I gave a class speech and the students found it funny, from then on, every time I spoke, people expected me to say or do something funny. It was fine for a while I went along. But I realised that I could no longer be taken seriously and one day I realised that I just didn't talk anymore. I changed higj schools the following year and in my new high school I was just the weird quiet kid and I rarely ever spoke. It took me so long to train myself to be able to speak in groups again. I'm now 27 and I still find myself become a silent observer now and again in social settings. I guess, in a way, it's who I've always been. When I think back on memories it os like I am just watching events happen but I'm not a part of them. Tonight I went to fetch my dad from a bar with his friends and I realised that I'm a lot better, I can talk and express myself if I so wish. Being the silent one in a crowd definitely has it's upsides and downsides.

It's a conundrum. Half of the people I work with are like this and then the other half are weirder than me. So I'm in a constant confusion on how to adapt myself lol

I have never related to a character more than I relate to duke.

This is a great example, when your friends think you're weird, and every little thing you do or say, they expect you to be weird and are completely hooked on their views of you, that you're indeed, weird. This experience is alienating.
