There are employees at the Stradivarius Museum whose job it is to take these magnificent instruments out of their cases and play them, usually two or three times a year. Apparently they lose tone if they are not played. To paraphrase, "A Stradivarius is safe in a museum, but that is not what they are for."

@billlembke1768

It is not any better than any other violin. People say it is better or the best so that they appear to be more cultured, knowledgeable, or an expert. It is like when says a very expensive bottle of wine is the best, until they find the fake label is actually on a cheap bottle. There is little or no difference in quality, just the perceived value. For the violin, you could polish a very inexpensive one, make up a detailed story, and say the value is $100 million. Many self-proclaimed experts would agree to promote their own identity, showing how shallow they are, and not suffocated.

@Hexensohn 3 місяці тому
@@billlembke1768 you would be right if we were talking about a master crafted modern violin. Those are often chosen above Strads in blind tests in terms of sound. But it is very, very different from lower quality student instruments. There certainly is a lot of snobbery and adherence to tradition in the classical music world, but to say a Strad doesn't sound better than other violin just isn't true. It is worth noting that these are also centuries old instruments that have been cared for and maintained to remain playable in the modern era. Their value isn't solely for their sound, they are also pieces of history.

I’ve played violin for many years, but the clarity and depth to the sound this violin produces is second to none. Those notes do not sound the same on a regular violin, and if I had to guess a reason it would be the chamber of the violin. I think it’s perfectly shaped in such a way that it allows the sound to echo out from inside at almost the same frequency and strength. Incredible.

You have to hear one in person. I watched Elizabeth Pitcairn play her famous red strad a few years ago in concert, head level to & 20 feet in front of, & it was unbelievably killer & very loud. It was beyond astonishing. She was a conduit with each leg & each arm/shoulder responding to a different section of the orchestra as she played her solos. And I swear, she appeared to be suspended in air an inch or two off the floor magically as the music flowed through her. She even provided truffles she just brought back from her UK tour, & wine & autographed glossy's to her meet & greet afterwards. Best show of my life!

A guy I went to high school with (class of '67) became a professional concert violinist. Sometime in the mid 1970's, he bought a Stradivarius for just a hair over $1 million. I wonder what that instrument is worth today? I also wonder what it is like to own something that is valuable and irreplaceable.

@@ACoustaDC At that level u're spending a lot of time w/ the instrument every day, so it's never out of sight. Most top professionals hv rigorous daily practice routines, 5-8 hrs a day. I asked a world-renowned bassist I know how much she (transexual, used to be a man) practices, she said "That's all I do." Don't know anything about her acoustic bass, but she's remarkable!
