Beanie’s death really hit me. Finding out someone died quietly after you wake up seems much more of a shock than being there when there are in the middle of dying.

Yes it is, I may not be talking about a pet but my son. A 28wk preemie and he "forgets" to breathe often in the NICU...it's terrifying when I visit and he has a episode and one time it was traumatic for me to see. After 3mos he was able to comfortably discharge but the fear was always there I was terrified I would wake up and he's gone or we are just sitting there holding him and he not breathing...it never happened but I had severe PPA I never slept and had hawk eyes on him for months. It's awful to do everything you can and think it's going well and just suddenly they are gone, I'm glad I never had to experience this if anything I did lose a very beautiful pup to parvo my mom refused to take to a vet when I was a kid

Only in that you weren't right there with them. I think watching my little dog suddenly having seizures and dropping into a continuous one before I could get him to the vet may have been worse than finding him deceased when I woke up. No sure about that though...either would be just awful. Don't plan on getting another on because I'm older. Could maybe make an exception for an elderly shelter dog, so am avoiding shelters for now because I might want to bring them all home, which isn't realistic.

I hope all my animals die peacefully in their sleep.. it's the best way to go. But my last cat had to be rushed to the emergency vet and died, it was a lot worse having them die struggling, scared, in pain, and not being able to do anything for them.

I'm so so sorry to hear this. Hoping that your baby passed from old age rather than it being something completely unexpected :( Doesn't make it feel any better but the unexpected losses hit so much harder at first. I work at a vet clinic and we lost a patient during a routine spay operation. She was a brachycephalic pet being a persian cat, which caused various complications to arise. Almost always, brachycephalic patients can be easily taken through anesthetic procedures by our vet and us as a team being proactive and administering medications much earlier than you would to your normal patient because these brachycephalic animals have such a hard time getting air into their lungs (if you wait as long as you do for normal patients to confirm a negative pattern occurring, it can make it even more difficult to get them back on track because their unconscious bodies have to work at least twice as hard as a normal patient to get air into and out of their lungs). However, for this unlucky kitten, the odds just weren't in her favor. She crashed rapidly on us seemingly out of nowhere. Literally one second she was doing just fine, and within a couple seconds, she had almost completely crashed. We all agree there must have been some kind of warning sign we missed, but even our seasoned and experienced doctor of 30+ years stated she had no idea it was about to happen and was completely unprepared for it. We did everything we could to bring her back, and we even *did* successfully bring her back for about 10 seconds, but she unfortunately left us once again and we were unable to keep her with us. It was absolutely gut-wrenching to lose a patient like that. She was only 8 months old. I wish so badly that there was something more we could have done, but sometimes these things just happen. I hated us having to tell her owner that she wouldn't be coming home. I hated even more that we had to have that conversation via phone rather than in person, but it would've also been cruel for her to arrive at the clinic to pick up her baby only to be told that her baby had passed on the table. Losing patients and pets when you're not "supposed" to is the absolute worst feeling. I'll never get over that part of the job as a pet owner and as a veterinary care provider

For some people it helps. You aren't replacing the dog you lost, because you could never replace them, but you are starting a journey with a new family member.

Losing your dog is extremely painful, my 15 year old staffy had to be put to sleep 4 months ago, it was heartbreaking, but he was blind in both eyes, his last four days he was having really bad seizures, and then walking around in circles for an hour afterwards, in the end he was just scared of everything, he passed quickly and painlessly and it still stings every day, but he had a full happy life and my best memories are of him. The pain of losing your dogs when they’re as young as these pups must be horrendous for the owners and the staff. I felt for them, I really did. RIP all you sweet innocent, angelic pups and adult pups too.

It is difficult to watch these beloved pets lose their battles with disease and stress and heart-wrenching for the veterinarians who work so hard to save them. I am very thankful for and grateful to our vets who care for our animals and pray their spirits are lifted and hearts comforted when they have to face the deaths of their patients. Lord bless and hold them close. ❤️🐾

I have a 4-yr old Westie-Cairn Mix and last night, my husband and I agreed that we do not like the silence in our home without her. I brought it up because she does this thing with her squeaky toys where she runs around our home squeaking them and we find it hilarious. We have gotten used to it because it's a happy noise, it means she's happy. She is so funny and loving. There have been nights when we come home from trips, and she's at daycare and I DO NOT like the emptiness or silence. I wake up a hour before the daycare opens, so I can pick her up because she's our baby. I adopted her when I was suffering from depression [before I met my husband] and I invested all of the love and life I had left in me, in her. She has helped me over come my depression and see the light in life, again. She helped my husband get through lockdowns because he had to work from home and he wasn't alone. He found comfort in her, as well. So our Shiloh is very special to us. I'm so sorry for what these families when through because I will be a mess the day our Shiloh is gone. I have already told my husband that I will grieve her loss like I have grieved my grandfather's loss or maybe even worse. RIP to these lovely animals who deserved better but were loved till the very end.
