They both are pretty similar in concept and design but both actually come from the same source instead of being copycats from each other. "Starship Trooper" (the book not the movie) from Robert A. Heinlein. Same goes for almost anything. Both were basiacly insipred by the same counts of Sci-FI (and sometimes Fantasy) books and movies including. The Dune series (BTW the series where they got the Emperor from), the Forever War, Battletech, Terminator, Alien, Star Wars and so on and on. Both didnt really invented the genre.

@@maank2146 No, you don't understand. Starcraft was literally intended to be the first wh40k video game but they lost the license and just used the assets and came up with a new story. The tyranids may or may not be based on Starship Troopers (Seems unlikely tbh. In the book, the arachnids are almost never really described, from their appearance to how they get from planet to planet. We can assume its ships because they moved their human prisoners around, but we can't really know. Meanwhile, their command structure functions very differently and general behaviour is also very different. The arachnids favor tunneling and live underground, but the tyranids don't really have a preference for anything other than getting at the enemy as swiftly as possible when they have numbers or preventing themselves from being detected when they don't. All in all, they aren't really all that similar. Also, while the arachnids had brains that thought and queens that hatched, the tyranids have synapse creatures that allow the hive mind to direct the swarm, but no real brains and they have no real equivalent to queens other than the tyranids large enough to carry spawning pools.), but the zerg were definitely based on the tyranids. All of the story elements of Starcraft were original as far as I know (I haven't read all that much pre-90's sci fi. Mostly Heinlein, Asimov and Wyndham) but none of the ones I had heard of included a sector being populated by what amounts to colonial Australians and psychic elves. WH40k as far as I know mostly took the background from Dune (The Butlerian Jihad and Muad'dib specifically) and then what it had from Warhammer Fantasy (Which came before Rogue Trader, which came before wh40k) and shoehorned those into a sci-fi universe. The necrons are basically the Warhammer Fantasy Tomb Kings, the Eldar are elves, the dark eldar are kinky elves (Don't know if they were based on anything other than eldar and bondage but w/e) and so on. Chaos is a faction completely new as far as I know, besides being generically evil people which very many series have. As for modelling, Starcraft took pretty much all its game 1 shit from warhammer, best examples being marines and zerglings, whose models are almost 1 for 1 copies with warhammer models. They did have to redo the models after their license got canned, but those 2 and hydralisks barely got touched. After that, they just tweaked it all and called it a day. Warhammer seems to have taken the space marines from Starship Troopers from a purely aesthetic view. They are large bulky suits of armor and some of them have jump jets. Aside from that, the Orks are typical orks with a very atypical backstory, the eldar are elves with a pretty typical backstory and the dark eldar are elves with a very atypical backstory. Chaos is neat. Half demons and half corrupted good guys (as a trope, normal) but then with a very original backstory. The Imperial guard are a unique thing across science fiction as far as I can tell. Their closest analogue is the Russian army in WW2. Necrons are skeletons with spoopy lightning guns (that ignore trivial things like armor) and the tau are communist space people (That have Japanese accents in the games but are otherwise not really related to the Japanese, so I have no idea why everyone calls them that. Maybe the robots and drones.). All in all, as backstory goes, mostly fairly original and as characters go, mostly Fantasy races shoehorned into sci fi universes.

In both cases the developer wanted to put their fantasy franchise (warcraft and warhammer fantasy (rip)) into space. 2: The tyranids have basiacly 2 major inspirations. The bugs from Starship Troopers for their hivemind society and the Aliens franchise for basiacly anything else (also for the look that also Starcraft copied) This is basiacly the case since the second Edition that was released 1995 (same year as the development of starcraft started btw) where the tyranids got their first codex and where also combined with the genestealer cult witch was a seperate entity before. Tyranids actually also existed in Rouge Trade before that but were alot diffrent from what we have today. 3: This also brings me to your lore analysis of the tyranids. Most what you wrote is more recent tyranid lore where they defined more but inital they were basiacly the aliens from aliens. GW tried to come up with more original lore and concepts but basiacly till the early 2000s WH40k Lore basiacly amounted to: Concept IN SPACE. Catachan: Rambo IN SPACE, Deathkorp of Krieg: WW1 IN SPACE, Eldars: Elves IN SPACE. Praetorian Guard: British Colonial Empire IN SPACE and so on. 4: If by Pyschic elves you mean the Elders these were basiacly Fantasy Elves in Space. Not everything was based on Sci Fi but also on Fantasy Novels (how else would you explain the Squats and Orks). Dark Elders are actually just Dark Elves going for the BDSM Astetic that was popualized by some metal and punk bands of the time. They also draw some inspiration from the fairfolk from World of Darkness. 5: Again Warhammer 40k had alot of inspiration especialy for the Empire (witch is the most refined group in the lore). The Servoarmor of the Space Marines for exampe comes from "The Eternal War" from Joe Haldeman and again Starship Troopers wihle their oranization in Legion comes again from GWs favourite Concept: Romans IN SPACE. The Imprial Army on the other hand is mostly inspired by current historical and sometimes armies. Look at the current cadia models (the first were actually modeled after the modern british army) they are basiacly from the starship Trooper movies. Also some parts of the Empire (and to some part Warhammer 40k in general) are very familiar to Judge Dreed (the comics from 77) 6: As you mentioned the Necros. Their similarities to the Tomb Kings from Warhammer Fantasy (rip) is actually the newer version of them. In their old Lore they were basiacly inspired by the Terminator movies (witch you can still see from their designs) and in Space Crusade they were even described as "Chaos Androids" just to showcase how much lore changed over time. 7: For the models in Starcraft. Non of the two invented Servo Armor and as described both Zergs and Tyranids where modeled after the Aliens. As stated two franchises drawing inspiration from the same material. And if you look at 2nd Edition minitures you actually see that the comparisons fall apart a bit. The only comparisson is basiacly that both were modled after insectoid/achranoid creatures. 8: To Summarize your last bit. Chaos are basiacly Demons even their symbol isnt original but is just the universal symbol for chaos from Michael Moonbrocks eternal Champion stories.And the Tau were put into the game because GW wanted to jump onto the anime hype but theres the possibilty that the Taus where actually stolen. You see the Tau were first introduced in Wh40k in 2001 and some people started to see some similaties with older franchises including the Vau (witch sounds convinend) from fading sun (witch is a technological advanced species inspired by the Quing Dynasty witch also sounds a bit familiar), and funnily enought StarCraft (the whole cast system witch is very similar to the protoss). And dont get me wrong here. Its absolutly plausible that both GW and Blizzard draw inspiration from each other. But lets be honest here both arent really creative Powerhouses when it comes to Original Concepts. The entire WH40k universe is basiacly things stiched together that GW ripped off from others. But in the end it really didnt matter because it is (or was till recently) just supposed to be pure overthetop Space Cheese just as Starcraft was just supposed to be Space Western Cheese. Sure most of it is just CONCEPT IN SPACE. But in the end its presented in a fun way. And as long they dont pull another "Age of Sigmar" and declare creativ brankrupcy again its all fine. Its all "ripped off" (or better inspired) content but its fun ripped off content.
