Cops should be no different. So tax payers wouldn't be paying for more training. It would merely require more education (tactical training as part of curriculum) If cops were salaried and not hourly we could eliminate overtime pay (NYC had @ 6 Billion annually in overtime) There are ways to redirect their current budgets to provide equipment and continued training IF they felt it was important & necessary.

Municipal law enforcement - at least in the South - came by way of making the volunteer "slave patrols" into permanent, paid positions. Of course, modern police force are completely separate from the old "slave patrols" because... well, actually I have no evidence to support that supposition. Maybe someone else does?

@J K ~ Some years ago, in Australia, the parents of a schizophrenic called the police to help their son. The son was having a psychotic break and cutting himself. They weren't in fear of being harmed themselves. They wanted their son taken to hospital for treatment. Upon arrival two officers would have seen what appeared to be a bloody confronting scene. The son was a threat to himself and the blood, gorey to those who have no nursing or medical training, would have looked a lot but wasn't. A female officer upon entering the kitchen shouted, "TASER TASER TASER!", fired a single shot from her service weapon and shot him dead in front of his parents. This was a mistake made by an officer who was probably shocked at the scene. Police shootings are very rare here. The officers never attempted to hide this accident and both immediately did their best to resuscitate the victim. The male partner disarmed the female officer who was in shock. Tasers are worn on the opposite side of the service weapon. This was an epic tragedy for all concerned. The female officer was inconsolable and no doubt would suffer every night as she relived the event in her dreams. It was an accident in every sense of the word. I think she left the force unfit on medical grounds. People are fallible and until you are tested, you won't know how you would perform. It was a mistake and nothing more. The reason that I remember it is simple: our police *RARELY* use their service weapon. It is rare for anyone to die as a result of of police action. We don't recruit police from those who served active duty in our military, police training is comprehensive, and it is a rare event for any police to pull their service weapon. There is no way on earth that any request from the police for protective equipment, would ever be ignored. The public outcry would result in a new government. I have the utmost respect for all who serve in our police. We don't use color or race descriptors. It's confronting to hearPeople are Australians and apart from Aboriginees, we come from every nation on earth.

Once I'd snapped out of it the only thing I could think to do was "get help"... As you can maybe guess, I wasn't thinking too clearly at the time. The only thing I thought to do was talk to campus police. Told them what had happened, and said I really just needed to talk to someone like a counselor. They spun my wheels for 10 minutes acting like they didn't believe me, then told me an officer was going to take me to someone I could talk to. They were lying. He threw me in the county crisis unit, against my will. Most traumatizing 19 hours of my life. And they wrote me up as a 5150, which destroyed months and forced me to withdraw from that semester. The _ONLY_ thing they had to do was give me the phone number of a crisis hotline. Instead I guess they thought it would be more fun to instill a lifelong fear and distrust of the police.

It makes me feel worried about going to the US, considering that my family name is German for “nail...”

A lot of people like to sneer at "celebrities" as though they're all vapid airheads who can't do anything "serious" (mostly, I suspect, out of jealousy), but celebrities are people. Some are corrupt, some are fools, and some are very able. Dwayne Johnson is not high on my list of choices for PotUS, but there are "celebrities" I would vote for, if they ran (depending on who they were running against, obviously). Look at the person in their totality, not one part of their resume. Not all celebrities are Donald Trump (who's faults as President had far more to do with his narcissism, sadism, and bigotry than his mere lack of experience).

The difference between them is that Johnson would be willing to listen, learn, and trust experts. I don't think he should run, yet, but I could see him as president if he got some experience, first, and found that politics fits him.
