It usually results in their products being “barely there.” The exception being the old iPod commercials, but even there it was just a white silhouette of the iPod being held with those iconic white earbuds in against a loud colorful background and silhouette of a person dancing. In Apple’s case, “barely there” is more than enough and perfectly in line with what the company wanted technology to do: enable things then get out of the way. You end up focusing on what’s going on and the emotions it invokes and find yourself more personally engaged than you would otherwise with a commercial. It works.
