Democracy is a fragile creation, and the Yale professor and historian of fascism Timothy Snyder should know. (Subscribe: bit.ly/C4_News_Subscribe)
His best selling book, ‘On Tyranny’, offers some practical and political advice for resisting authoritarianism. Professor Snyder had the American reader in mind when he wrote it. But can we learn anything from his work?

Spot on, and right now I have more reasons to fear the rise of fascism in the UK than in Germany, much because the British are too overconfident and probably believe fascism speaks foreign. As Timothy Snyder pointed out some Brits have a very short memory when it comes to how popular Adolf was in Britain for several years.

@Paulo Chan Where did this person say that the rise of hard left isn't a problem or disagreeing with you? They just weren't discussing the hard left, they were in this case, discussing fascism, nothing else. Pointing out a body count of 100 million corpses isn't getting anyone's point across and has absolutely nothing to do with the discussion at hand. They also haven't mentioned any body count for fascism, which is not to be trifled with. They only discussed symptoms of proopaganda and some characteristics of fascism. And they're not wrong. What the UK really needs after Brexit is a mirror to take a good long look at itself, rather than telling others how horrible they are.

@James Registe Have I said that there are? In any case it's not entirely true. There was the Khmer and several other organizations, but yes, most of the left wing extremism has died out with the failure of communism in several parts. But one could hardly argue that for example North Korea is right wing, not a dictatorship and doesn't have people killed -- the facts point in the other direction. Whlie not the same as right wing extremism / supremacy, there are extremes on both sides of the spectrum. National socialism, or nazism, by its very definition is socialist, except its an extremely populist and extremist version of it which invariably includes the superiority complex - something which is clearly observable in present day politics both in America and in the UK (but not ONLY). In other countriesm, such as Poland, Hungary, Italy and even Germany there are also such groups. Not like the IRA or the RAF leftist groups mind you, but at least political ones. So while I largely agree with you, I think we shouldn't completely discount the other side either.

@Paulo Chan None of these leftists are in power, you muppet. You do exactly what Snyder refers to when he talks about how the responsibility is never theirs. @Joe Bloggs. Don't deflect, my friend. You can criticise Timothy Snyder all day long. He is not a perfect historian. He got his flaws. But when you criticise him don't just state: "empirical facts are just opinions". That's nothing else than simply stupid and says more about you than him.
@AbsolutSpaceGirl
@AbsolutSpaceGirl 4 роки тому
@Joe Bloggs. Dr. Snyder is a historian who specializes in the history of Central and Eastern Europe, specifically the 20th century. Central and Eastern Europe in the 20th century, in case you are unaware, included democracies that fell into fascism and authoritarianism. That is not an opinion and it is not up for debate. If you are unfamiliar with 20th century European History, that's fine, but perhaps in the meantime it would be best to not comment on it as though you were. if you are unfamiliar with Dr. Snyder himself, I just mentioned 3 of his books to help you get up to speed. There are also numerous UKposts videos of him giving lectures and interviews, and he has his own UKposts channel where he posts his own content. Now that you are informed as to how you may educate yourself on this specific topic should you wish to be included in intelligent discussion, feel free to proceed. (this is good advice for generally every topic). If you respond with a reply that is similar to your previous one, I'm going to let you know in advance that it will be ignored because I have a policy of disengaging from situations that I see going nowhere. If you would like to engage in a way that makes meaningful discussion possible and are able to back up any assertions with factual sources and logical reasoning, then I look forward to it. Enjoy your day. :)
@ricardocima
@ricardocima 4 роки тому
He's not beyond criticism. The NY Review of Books made serious criticisms on his "Bloodlands" and the suspicion that he's kinda "angry" about Trump's election was actually debated in specialized midia. Hitler's biographer, Volker Ullrich, was clear when he said that whenever someone is compared with Hitler, the comparison has political motives. I personally think that he should be ashamed of this kind of talk, specially being a historian. "Us and them" is not exactly specific fascist trait, it is the core of class struggle, which is the blood of almost all leftist politics ( not judging, just stating the fact). The same goes to simple slogans. When Julien Benda wrote his book, he didnt accuse a specific ideological spectrum as the sole responsible. Snyder is a good historian but I suspect that he will regret this phase of his career.

Envy doesn’t really come into it when you’re holding to account a government who has allowed building regulations to kill people, nationals to be treated like foreign invaders, pensioners losing their promised pensions, causing some to be made destitute, police number reduced so much that protection network failed to prevent at least one massive terrorist attack, disabled people being made to attend tribunals at their lowest, when their illnesses are degenerative. Of all of the recent books I've read recently with an eye to history, or our present moment, this was one of the best. Although, the most striking anecdote, is from another book. The tale of the Nazi soldier, marching whilst seriously injured and talking to a writer toward the end of the war, about how the dire straights the Nazis were in was 'all part of Hitler's plan'. There is no end at which some people, perhaps many people, will cling to a Dear Leader, or other such dogmas. I sometimes think that the human mind is a machine for making lies, just so it can cope with the world around it. Then one's life's work becomes something like -- I must care about being wrong, every day, for as long as I live.

@@angelperez3750 There are several major flaws in your argument. The first being that we were not clever enough to vote on brexit If this is the case, then we should not vote for governments/parties either. For we vote in a government which deals with a VAST range of issues, of which Brexit is a subset. The other is that the entire history of our being in the EU has been a string of anti-democratic actions. Begining with powers of law making and governance being handed over to a foreign organisation without ANY electoral consent by way of manifesto or referendum. Calls for referendums were blocked and denied for decades, until BOTH main parties were elected on a promise of an EU manifesto. BOTH of them reneged on the promises when they found out what the result would be. ONLY when they thought it safe to do so, and remain would win by a comfortable margin did the ant-democrats allow us a say in who rules over us and who we pay taxes to. Then they lost the democratic vote, and an election followed in which well over 80% of MP's were elected on a promise to honour the outcome of the referendum. Shortly afterwards the perfidious liars declared themselves proud remainers. But I already knew from previous EU promises that they had NO intention of keeping, they would lie. They have no respect for democratic procedure, not respect for the electorate, (Just look at the childish name calling tantrums which many leading remain politicians wallowed in after the result was announced.) they do not even respect their own manifesto. (If you dont represent what you claim to represent at election time, then it is NOT representative democracy.)

@@markhorton8578 yes, you do live in a representative democracy. You pick a politician represent you and your interest. I think referendum was clever way to throw away that responsibility of a representative goverment onto the public, and most people aren't politicain and don't have time or energy understanding socail-economic effects of brexit. If parlement can barely grasp how to implement what was voted for, can you realy trust the fact that the common man knew complexity of brexit ? The question was simple in or out, but how to go about it is completely different issue, and how it effects Britain is even more complex. The average person such as myself are morons and then other half is even dumber then that. janitors and school teachers should not be literally writing every letter of the law for politicians. There is a bizarre disjunction however when he selectively projects that onto the current political climate , very oddly ignoring the very most obvious congruences with key fascist tactics , which aren't limited to the " right". Snyder's more detailed work also explicitly notes the importance of national state sovereignty to providing capacity for resistance to global authoritarianism , and yet in the real world now , he fails to recognise that is still important.

Ah well, perhaps nobody is perfect. At 4 mins 34ish, he said, " If you go too far on the side of momentary impulse, then you have Anarchy and degradation". A bit silly, and dangerous from someone who otherwise seems to know something of what he's talking about. Anarchy, is about not being governed, ( from the Greek, "An meaning without, and "Archos", meaning rulership), therefore living by personal responsibility, self control and discipline. It has to be towards the common good, because without common cause, there will be a backlash, and selfish individuals not evolved enough to realise that, will suffer the consequences. Those who then learn from that mistake, will learn to be considerate, of the common good. Such a consequence must be evolutionary, and therefore, *not*, "degradation". Less silly and dangerous, but simply wrong, is his assertion about the need to make eye contact. (8 mins 50 ish), because there are really good, well motivated and intelligent people, with social / psycho/medical conditions, (e.g. Greta Thurnberg), who simply don't have as much ability to do that, as people regarded as "normal", can manage

Where does this historian stand politically? It's disturbing that he is talking about fascism and then makes direct reference to Trump and Brexit. The Brexit referendum could be viewed as a form of direct democracy and there was nothing illegal about it. The division has been caused by the representatives in the HOC who do not want Brexit to go ahead, not the results of the referendum itself. If he doesn't understand that distinction then I have no idea what value his comments have. Every political philosopher of worth has always stressed the importance of the separation of the executive and the legislative bodies. If in the case of the Supreme Court who adjudicated on a political issue these judges should stand for election - as they do in the states. When the executive and the legislative merge there is the path of tyranny, or perhaps he is better informed than the greatest political philosophers who have written extensively in this area. It's shocking how poorly constructed his argument is. What is his premise? That there are political differences and this leads directly to fascism? That is not a premise - that's an opinion. He obviously doesn't understand the difference. This is nothing more than propaganda Channel 4. Why am I not surprised.

He stated that the brexit referendum was not binding ;all parties said that the result would be enacted into law. His obvious intention is to appeal as an expert that anything he says is more reliable than any other narrative. Democracy is not dependent on rule of law; the democratic ancient Greeks used the word isonomia= equality in the eyes of the law,whereby the connotation of law includes that of custom. He also used the word empire which is the word Verhofstadt has used to describe the EU and he said that the idea of empire is fascistic, further confirmation that all the certainties which leave voters have are justified by facts. Pure propaganda as you would expect from C4.

@nicklynn6073
@nicklynn6073 4 роки тому
@@lawrencebrown3677 Well, your original statement was so verbose and rambling I was wrong to say it was a 'typical Gammon response.' It also made it somewhat difficult to decipher exactly the point(s) you were making. Regarding your points: I'm not sure his is 'obvious intention' was to 'appeal as an expert.' Channel 4 invited him in because he clearly does have some expertise and knowledge of history and Fascism. Doubtless he'd be the first to concede that his academic view is one amongst many. The referendum of 2016 was 'advisory.' Political parties could have used the result as a basis for informed and construct discussion within this country and within the EU. Sadly Cameron, like other British political leaders was too weak to consider that option. I would suggest that the Ancient Greek notion of democracy has now, in our society, changed or evolved so that UK democracy is dependent on the rule of law - indeed, that notion is now our custom (however Johnson and Cummings might want to challenge it). Snyder's insights on how propagandists in the Internet age are devising and using simple slogans repeated again and again as if that somehow gives them a truth was pertinent and replicates Fascist tactics. It was entirely relevant to the way in which the Leave campaign orchestrated their referendum campaign, and the way in which Johnson and Cummings are now pursuing their 'die in a ditch' Brexit strategy. As for equating the comments he made about Empire with the EU, well that's debatable - regardless of what you claim Verhofstadt said (and I don't know the context in which it was allegedly said). What I do know, is that the claims consistently made by Leavers about the EU - the Leaver/Gammon narrative - describe a political and organisational entity that I do not recognize. It's not perfect, but it's not as the Leaver/Gammon narrative would have us believe. Try as I might (and contrary to your assertion) I've not been able to get a Leaver to offer me any hard factual evidence for the claims consistently made by the Leave side. What I do know (in addition to the wealth of impartial research I've read) is that in some of the places I've lived in during my adult life, the failures of investment, of housing etc. have all been down to British Government policy. In contrast to that business and housing projects have been built and funded by EU money - specifically areas of Devon & West Cornwall, but elsewhere too. On the same theme (and again counter to your claim) I've also not been able to get Leavers to offer any hard factual evidence as to how lift outside the EU will be economically or culturally better than what I've experienced in this country for the last 40 years. What I get are the same tabloid slogans and untruths. Worse still, the mentality and world view of most of the Leavers I've encountered and tried to debate with is so tribal and bigoted that they simply refuse to engage with any view that does not equate to theirs. The usual response is to revert to slogans 'Leave means leave', 'will of the people', 'remoaners', 'lefty traitors' etc. Indeed, your final sentence is of the same ilk - hence my reply. If you regard C4's output as 'propaganda' then perhaps you shouldn't watch it.

@Dr Diablory Well, first, thanks for providing a transcript!! Starting with his first question, I find it sophomoric at best. In the UK, you've had UKIP to deal with for a while now. I consider as do most political scientists white nationalism a fascist or at least an incipient fascism. And in the States, we had the orange clown say overt fascists included good people the weekend that one of these 'good people' killed one peaceful demonstrator and injured several others in Charlottesville, Virginia. The phasing of his opening question just seems totally out of synch with the factual background. I frankly don't understand what his second question about borrowing tactics means---. And the third question again seems impossibly uninformed or misinformed: What's wrong with what they're doing? So the way this is worded, a possible answer could have been, aw, gee, nothing really. This kind of Zealousness of neutrality brings to mind Neville Chamberlain's ("peace in our time") appeasement of the epitome of evil, Adolf Hitler. I'm not trying to tell you that you're wrong; I'm just trying to describe my thought processes.

From what he has just said it appears that a democratic result in an election that you don’t like is fascism. My father fought against Germany during the Second World War, he fought for his country and his school friends died for the same reason. He never once mentioned that he fought against fascism.
