Marjory, hell with these dumb f@*ks that don't understand or appreciate this amazing chapter in NYC house music/dance. You are gorgeous, and your dance is hypnotic. Bless you.

@@omarkhalil3662 Omar I really speak under correction, but I think this is Marjory Smarth, the renowned house dancer who passed away due to cancer in 2015.

Hi everybody!!! This is Marjory..I want to use this opportunity to clear things up..I want to thank Chicago for inspiring the world musically...BUT!!! This documentary is not about the whole house scene...If you saw the whole documentary there was a vogue section also..This documentary is about particular club kids & our experiences...

Yes, in the SF Bay Area back in the 80s - - "the California" some called it "the Guess" like the jeans-guess which side... Others called it "the Louis Vuitton" - as if one was making Ls & Vs as they shifted side to side... 🙏🙏🙏Thank all of yalls for the music, the dancing & the documentaries... 80s-90s were some great times 🙏🙏🙏

Folk don't dance nowadays. They just stand there & point with a slight bounce. usually with an IPhone or a beer can in the other hand. Back in the day it was all about te music & the dancing.

First time I was ever in a club was at Red Zone in 1990. I recognize a few of these guys being in the club that night. As a matter of fact the girl Marjory was one of them, I see she passed RIP. They broke out a circle and everyone moved back to give them room. The club played The Poem and the smoke machine filled the floor. This square cage thing lowered from the ceiling while this insane light show flipped on when the speaking part of the Poem ended. I recall the dancers in the circle wearing those baggy suits and the big platform shoes that you saw in the Stomp video. What I remember most was Lisa Stansfield been around the world was playing outside as we were waiting to get in. I think Kenny Ken was on the rope. Once inside you had the dancers like in this video, the drag queen types, some hip hop people, wall street guys in suits, basically an very diverse group of late night people all dancing.

I remember those days. Wish I could rewind the tape and go back there.

Got to go to clubs in my early teenage years, first time was in 90' The Marquee, very lucky to get in. i was burnt out at 20 and went to the air force in 96. I still have many flyers! No disrespect to people from Chicago & some of you that were negative about this,but you didn't have anything to do with our growth as dancers...Most of of us in this documentary were able to come from street jams ,then to the clubs and now we've able to inspire the world...Try to see the positive in people sharing their part of the story..It may not be your story but it's ours & I'm proud to have been part of it!!! Peace..LIVE TRUE & DANCE FREE!

I loved Hip Hop, but my true love has been and always will be House. I grew up amidst a lot of homophobic behavior so I had to chill since back then, House and Techno was equated to homosexuality. I wish I had the courage back then to say “ain’t nothing gay about 4 on the 4 floor.”
@steeevooomoscato35724 роки тому

Part 1. House music did in fact start in chicago. However, house music evolved from disco, soul and loft music and all of that started in NY(except 4 the Europe speeded up re-edits). Record lables like West End, Sal Soul and Prelude were NY based lables. And Frankie Knuckles from the South Bronx brought those sounds to Chicago. Before House, we were calling it Club music, underground music and now we call it dance music since the music played isn't strictly just house.
@clh21927 місяців тому
Larry Levan, Boyd Jarvis, Timmy Regisford were doing it before Chicago. And, Frankie Knuckles brought the NY groove to Chicago. So in reality it started in NY.

It's funny how bad the early 90s fashion was...when you went to club they played dance music...and people danced...they didn't stare at the DJ and pump their fist. They played classics, r&b, hip-hop, and reggae all in the SAME party...beleeeedat!
@Majesticon5 років тому
U must be in hell because 90s fashion is back in full force
@djJackMF5 років тому
That's not 90's fashion at all. That's a mid/ late 80's version of early 80's GQ/Zoot Suit fashion. They were just being "classic" at that moment.

house! came from disco breaks! back when america banned disco... it went underground into a warehouse in chicago and for short ppl called it the house!and so on...
@clh21925 днів тому
Nah. The story of house is one the underground clubs in late 60s, early 70s NYC... NYer Robert Williams left NY, moved to Chicago and missed the NY scene. He purchased property and needed a DJ. He went to NY for that DJ. He wanted Larry Levan. But Levan and others declined. Eventually one said yes. The DJ's name was Frankie Knuckles and the property became known as the Warehouse. When Williams and Knuckles went their separate ways, Williams found another DJ, this time from the Chi. His name was Ron Hardy. And, the Music Box was born. All the while the NY scene cont'd to develop-Nick Siano, Leroy Burgess, Patrick Adams, Greg Carmichael, Levan, Knuckles, Boyd Jarvis, Tony Humphries, David Morales... House Music is a NYC thing.

Haha! I noticed the exact same thing. I've only ever heard the track on one of Reverend Arkenstone's house mixes ukposts.info/have/v-deo/eqiJqGqrb55qmKc.html, but watching this house dancing video just now, I knew I heard that part of the video somewhere before. The Sprinkles track samples the "Anyway" somewhere in there too. I love coming across unexpected things like this.

@moshhon These dancers are decedents of the Hoofers & Lindy Hoppers, raised on the SAME SOIL, NYC/US....UK JAZZ DANCERS got there dance from the same people...that being said...the influence is from their elders not UK...remember there was no youtube back then....

@TheAUDIOARCADE i see a heavy jazz dance (20's - 50's) influence on both northern soul and house. jazz dance which was developed in nyc (harlem at the savoy to be exact)... i think it's most likely that "house dance" style is derived from the jazz dance style (same geographical area - before internet as well) than the derivative northern soul style. the reason why they may look superficially similar is because they share the same root.
