Yeah I’m Haitian myself, a witch doctor can put roots on you usually it is for vengeance, if you look up the Miami zombie it’s a complicating topic because around that time of the incident. Flocka a drug that was going around ( I’m also a south Florida native) was taking over and gave zombie like tendencies but there was no trace of it found in his system.

Romero has had the most impact on zombie popularity and though his works followed a few Hollywood zombie movies he wasn’t basing them on anything related to voodoo of witchcraft. The real thing that blew up zombies though was video games in the 90s. Though the history of zombi and vodou is interesting it’s not had the biggest impact on zombie culture, the main thing is the word.

I recently decided to dive into zombie (and other "monster") academic literature, and the amount of information and the take on this cultural phenomenon is really interesting. Indeed, a very interesting fact about zombies is the erasure of their origins from popular discourse, and their re-packaging for mass consumption. literally every culture has it's own version of zombies (some even have multiple different versions). there's even a German word for the phenomena of zombie and ghost myths across different cultures (Wiedergänger). . the only part of this that is specifically Haitian is the word "Zombie". and even that is technically a distorted version of whatever original west African lore it was based on. while the name "Zombie" has been appropriated, the specific concept on reanimated corpses has not been. just that the versions we see in media match closer to those of European and Asian folklore then to African folklore. and even then, Africa is filled with hundreds of different cultures all with their own myths and lore, and some do in fact have stories of undead corpses eating the living. it's a common fear in many cultures and has been for many many centuries. . claiming that the zombies have been appropriated or whitewashed is like saying that faeries have been. everyone uses the almost all cultures have the concept of some form of nature spirit but the word faerie comes from fae which comes from the Germanic languages and the German word fee (for the confused English speaking Celts, the original Gaelic/Celtic word for fae was aes sídhe /Aos Sí and daoine sìth for the Scots specifically. The English stole the Germanic word and then spread that while trying to wipe out Celtic cultures and languages). . Germanic fae are nothing at all like the kind and pretty Disney faeries based off of English folklore. Germanic fae are extremely dangerous (the house elf) and include everything from pixies, elves, and mermaids to goblins, werewolves, and ogres to gnomes, dwarves, and changelings, to tree ents, and other nature spirits. and because of the English misuse of the term fae/faeries, many cultures now use the word (many times semi incorrectly). does that make it appropriated? maybe. does anyone care? no anymore. . so while this video is a fascinating look at the history of the word "zombie" and the specific Haitian myths. it is wildly incorrect in implying that the concept of zombies is purely African or that the version we see in media is culturally insensitive and wrong. Technically speaking, the only wrong part is using the same name to describe different myths. but many names have been lost because everyone defaults to the same word when speaking the same language. like how most countries have entirely different names depending on which language you're speaking.

Thank you for taking the time and posting this comment. It's just unfortunate how small of only a fraction of those that will end up watching this video will also read this comment. I was almost considering picking a different video just because of that opening talking about appropriation and whitewashing. I'm sorry, but we are now into the 21st century (and this is especially true for those of us living in the U.S.) every group or culture of people have taken something from some other culture that once existed. It also gets frustrating whenever enslavement is brought up, it's only spoken of in the context of white Europeans enslaving blacks from Africa. But not only has enslavement of some group of peoples existed for at least the last 4000 years of human history and on every continent by every race/ethnic group. But for some reason theres a little detail that seems to always be left out whenever slaves from Africa are mentioned. That being, those slaves were sold to Europeans by other African people, typically whenever one tribe went to war with or attacked another tribe, and consisted of those that were captured and taken alive. This video was talking about the slaves that were brought to France. Does anyone believe that when someone from France decided more slaves were needed, that they would just hop on a boat, sail down to Africa, and then walk around whatever part of Africa they landed on until they came across some African tribe, and then somehow communicated with that tribes leaders and convinced them they just needed to hop on this giant boat and would live the rest of their lives experiencing nothing but sunshine and rainbows. But then, once on the boat, found themselves chained up? I just never hear it brought up that slaves were sold to Europeans, and at the same time don't understand how or what people think happened in order to acquire those slaves.

It reminds me of Joseph Campbell, your comment, on his cultural anthropological work studying various tribes and people groups across the globe, finding extreme similarities even in groups that were basically isolated with little contact with the outside world. You also have Carl Jung and his theory of perhaps a global subconscious we all tap into, like while we dream, and that’s why our dreams have universal meetings or we have the same myths. But it’s like you say - we all have the same concept. Look at vampires - almost every culture has some form of the creature even if they never came in contact with other people groups. It’s all subconscious human fear I believe, that make us create the same creatures in isolation all across the globe.
