This video covers all the basics needed for getting started with Home Assistant. It's a bit of a beast! It covers:
* how to get Home Assistant up and running on a Raspberry Pi
* setting up new devices
* making some automations
* using the Home Assistant Cloud
* setting up Alexa & Google Assistant
* how the mobile apps work
* creating dashboards

Word of advice. Mute out the word "hey" when you say "Hey, Google". You were turning off and on my own personal devices. : )

Excellent tutorial. I am new to HA and this helped me set it up on a Raspberry Pi 4. I have about 18 shelly units to switch various things in the house and garden but am unable to see them. They are all linked to my TP-Link Deco M5 mesh system. This is connected to a 24 port TP Link switch which is where the Raspberry Pi and modem are connected. I have tried the Shelly integration and tried putting in the ip address for one of the Shelly relays but they fail to connect. Do they need to be connected to the modem wifi rather than the mesh wifi. Be grateful for your help with this..

Just watched your video: - Clicked on like - subscribed - ordered a Home Assistant Green - will get cloud subscription - will debloat my highly disfunctional Google Home and only keep speakers and displays to control some of the HA exposed devices and scenes. Automations will all go into HA instead.

Thanks Adam. Very interesting and useful. I have a number of questions but the one that's puzzling me is How do you get the data for Energy ie what is the source of the data for Solar? I'm a total newbie but I'm keen to get into it. Thanks

Excellent video. About to set up HA. When HA detected for example hue devices, can you now go and remove your hue account, or do you keep both hue and HA environments? Could you in theory have disconnected from Hue and then started with their devices? Most of my devices are smartlife/tuya, some wifi some via zigbee hub, wondering if can disconnect everything beforehand.

@adam thanks for this video. I was able to get my Pi setup and running. So cool. I have a problem though. I have several Aqara devices and it doesn't seem to "auto discover". Do you have any tutorials to help add my Aqara devices? I am an Android guy so no Home Kit.

This looks simple, HA installed ok but on my network I found my smart plugs were not supported and to get them to work looks like it requires some complex configuration at the least.

Good tutorial! The only thing I'd recommend is when saying "hey Google" you might mute your audio and put the text or subtitles on screen. This video was making my Google speakers go nuts lol.

Nice material. Really helpful and informative. I think this topic actually needs a few long format videos. 20 min would be just too compressed and skip useful things. Things beginners can get stuck on. I have a question for you. Do you know if a product that can be used to monitor if a non smart device is turned on. Something like a smart power clamp that can report when someone has turned on a fan for example. It could alternatively be a sort of relay but rather than switch a thing on it would just report if a line is live. Really interested to hear what you might suggest. Thanks again.

Take a look at "shelly em clamp". it reports to HA , there are a number of similar options

Fantastic Video - just want I wanted to know, as was toying with what to do with a spare Raspberry Pi and didn't know much about Home Assistant. Now I do :-) Thanks. Quick Question - I have a Pi 3 Model B - How much is the minimum for the SD card ? Is 16 GB enough ?
@AdamCookeTV
@AdamCookeTV Рік тому
16GB is likely fine to begin with. You might want to upgrade if you have many devices or want to store a lot of history. It's fairly easy to just migrate by taking a backup of the old card and restoring it onto a new one. If you have a busy home, you might even want an SSD (adam.ac/blog/raspberry-pi-home-assistant-from-sd-card-to-ssd/)

Really amazing and super useful video! just getting started setting up home assistant on my NAS so I can learn how to use it and deploy it for use in my off grid home. Quick question: where is your home energy and solar generation data coming from? Something like a Shelley EM? or is that a feed from your charge controller and inverter, etc?
@AdamCookeTV
@AdamCookeTV Рік тому
The energy data comes from a few sources. It that video it was mostly coming from Shelley EMs but also from smart plugs and from external APIs (myenergi). I have since had a Powerwall installed and I'm just using the data it provides there now. I still have some EMs for monitoring individual devices like the Cooker and Heat Pump.

Good video for me (HA newbie) 1 thing I would recomand and that is installing HA on a SSD and not a SD. Raspberries are known to 'eat' SD cards.

If you love tinkering HA is for you. Not advocating for any of the technology out there to this date but there are much simpler solutions that don't require you to learn different OSs and command lines and such or have 10 adapters sticking out of a box to work. Most devices now a day work with other home assistants with different protocols and they are a lot easier to setup, of course anything depending on online/offline connections will have hiccups every so often but for the most part they are reliable to a degree. Just my 2 cents and I owe one to Uncle Sam! 😅🤣😂

Hi, I'm planning to move from google home to home assistant. All my devices are managed by their vendors' apps and linked to google home. Will they be recognized and managed by Home Assistant? Or should I unlink them first or even enter pairing mode? Thanks!
@AdamCookeTV
@AdamCookeTV Рік тому
It'll depend on the device. Home Assistant can co-exist with other apps usually but I avoid it because it can be fairly confusing when you don't know where configuration is for certain things. The main thing I don't put in Home Assistant directly are scenes in Philips Hue - I manage the scenes within the Hue app and then trigger them from HA.

Unfortunately I had to stop watching this very well presented and informative UKposts post due to the very loud fill music ... you have to turn down the volume at the spoken content only to have to turn the volume back up again to hear the great dialog. The difference between the dialog and the background is far too great.. Shame ... I'm not deaf.
