The island used to be covered in forest, but the island's expanding population exhausted the forest and other resources, destroying their own means of sustenance. These giant statues are the last remaining trace of their presence on what has become inhospitable territory.

I whole-heartedly agree... but I don't have a plane at my disposal to head there and plant a tree. What can the little people, like me, do? I know it is the expectation of defeat that stops many of us from doing anything, we need more small (non-monetary) solutions.

Thor Heyerdahls book "The Mystery of Easter Island" explains how the Moai's were made by the intelligent Islanders. The former forest was believed to be destroyed by humans however recent studies have discovered otherwise. A beautiful Polynesian Island along with its people. NIce video, thanks for posting
