15 років томуLos Angeles, a sprawling conurbation with a population of 17 million, is constantly animated by the traffic on its tangle of end-to-end freeways. At night, the glow of the lights hides the stars in the night sky from the inhabitants of the city of movie stars. Their automobiles enable them to travel from their homes to work every day and to live in residential suburbs far from the inner cities, but this way of life, made popular and desirable by books, TV shows and movies, is not sustainable. This individualistic, consumer lifestyle requires a lot of space and burns a lot of valuable energy.

Thank u guys. I will have to plan better next time it seems. Climate is awesome in LA. I am from Midwest and it has been snowing here like forever. Am sure u guys are partying out there :) I wish I get a chance to visit Cal this winter!

Well said DonHamburger. Our street culture is definitely imitated across Europe as well. Brit Rock wouldn't exist without Jazz and blues in the states. Los Angeles has the highest aggregation of architects in the world...I wonder why....

Completely agree. I'm an international studies and geography double major, and about to graduate soon. I'm thinking about careers either in international development or environmental sustainability. I having difficulty deciding whether I want to improve the lives of the billions living in decrepit conditions, or limit the impact on the environment as much as possible. Both are ideal, but the more developed a country becomes, the more it consumes.

LA, Orange County, Riverside County, and San Diego are all growing into each other. Southwest is still growing while the Northeast is running out of room.

thank for the advice :D yeah, I've seen celebs. LA is a huge city with all kinds of different stuff going on leaves no time for anything. taking the freeways to work while being in traffic for about an hour and then back home late at night. Really leaves you no time for family or neighbors or anything that's other than work. I'd rather live in a smaller town...

This video portrays L.A. in a very distant, remote, haunting way. Anonymous car lights surging through its' freeways at night. No wonder people comment it seems scary. L.A. is not only big, it's HUGE. That's why all those smaller city-centers have to develop. To have some kind of identity within walking distance: DTLA, Korea-Town, China-Town, J-Town, Hollywood, Century City, The Valley. The weather is amazing. 200 straight days of sunshine. And the people like to look good. Welcome to my home.

Small town kids miss the city. The city kids miss the trees. How did we get this backwards? We're needing more than a change in scenery No matter where you live, you'll probably be subject to believe that somewhere else is better. i live in Wichita Kansas, and it's a pretty great city but i always hear my classmates say "I wish i lived in LA or NYC or something." Wichita isn't a one-horse town, but it's also not a gigantic city. it's the perfect balance if you ask me.

Los Angeles is a great city. Like any other city you have to go the right places when visiting. Dont go to downtown or Hollywood.

Yes i hate the smog and we need better public transport but i'm glad i was born in this city. SF, NY and a lot of other cities are so tightly knit that i get claustrophobic! Streets in SF and Europe don't make any sense if they're not in a grid pattern, it drives me mad! Here it hardly gets cold, windy and foggy which can be depressing as hell. I'm sure there are a lot of fake people, but at Dodger Stadium we all get along!

Why not? I enjoy downtown, it holds a lot of history. I wouldn't live in either of those places, aha, but I also wouldn't discourage people to visit it either.

@MegaJackieboy Even if I did, what's the difference? I'm actually in San Diego, but I'm not happy about it. I've been to NYC plenty but I'm still too young to leave on my own, but when I do, it won't be anywhere NEAR here or LA or any other crap town.

lol I have a feeling that most if not all people who talk about how they love LA or they want to move there dont really spend much time there. I commute to LA 4 times a week and I see it for everything it is. Not just the glamour that is publicized on TV. Dont get me wrong theres lots of history and lots of cool places, but the majority of the city is run down trash. People are fascinated by it because of how much they see it on tv and in all the movies, which is a facade for the most part

@TylerWallake it just shows different viewes n oopinions. Ihave never been to LA but i'd love to visit at least to see the place where alot of celebrites live ( they could pick probably any place in the world to live but they choose LA for some reason) From what i saw in videos LA is kinda empty n there r very ltl trees n plants there, like a deserty- not my thing

@TylerWallake It's all about personal preference. If you prefer palm trees, beaches, and mountains over cold weather, hustle and bustle, and gothic architecture then you'd EASILY find LA more attractive then NYC.

It's like expecting Phoenix, Az to have redwoods. People need to learn a little about geography before making an assumption that a city is "green" simply because they have trees. New York isn't any greener than LA because of Central Park. It is the policies that cities enact, and the conservation of the natural environment around them (wither tropical, dessert, or chaparral) that makes them "green."

After reading a few comments, most of you seem to be ignoring the fact that the director of this short clip was trying to portray the fact that American auto-centric society is unsustainable. The system of roads, highway/interstate and general pavement along with the airport tarmac portray the land and resources used to build them. An even bigger amount is used to construct, maintain, and fuel the cars that travel on those roads, not to mention the light pollution and commute time they produce.

Its heading in that direction. Walking in Downtown is pleasant enough for me but perhaps too gritty in some areas for most. The unique thing about the the LA Metropolitan area is that it contains cities within the city. Its not uniform at all like New York Or Pairs. That may be a either a downfall or a benefit. Current urban plans are to densify these mini cities (Downtown, Burbank, Pasadena, Santa Monica, K-Town) and eventually connect them through the new Metro lines.

Yeah, I know. We also consume less energy than the rest of the nation. Yet, there's definitely room for improvement. I think Angelenos overall, as well as city officials, are realizing the need for more concentrated urban centers. Which include employment, living, and play all near each other and accessible via public transit. The only issue is that they are catering mostly to the rich, and their models don't include affordable housing. Therefore the poor, a majority, continue to sprawl.

@skillcentre The "City Life" in NYC is sooooo overrated. Buenos Aires, Madrid, Tokyo, and Mexico city have awesome nightlife. NYC is so, so. Too hyped up. LA's nightlife is enormous but spread throughout a larger area.
