I've been building these tools for years BUT never with the metal track. That is incredible thankyou for sharing. It improves an OK plan to a great plan. I will be building them like yours from now on. This tool makes cutting sheets of plywood much safer for one person, as opposed to using a table saw. It also means there is no $1000 dollar table saw left on the job site when there's no one around. That was common practice in the past.

Tracksaws are the great unsung heroes of the workshop. Way better than struggling with large sheets on the table saw. Both safer and much more accurate. In fact, for the home shop, they can be a real space saver as you can get away with a jobsite saw plus a track saw.

I was beginning to wonder if only I had that idea too. Instead of a fine V notched spreader, I used a wide putty knife with a few wires wrapped over the edge to create a uniform silicone layer.
@alfredomarquez9777
@alfredomarquez9777 2 роки тому
I'm not fond of using any silicone around wood or any other surface that will be coated later, as it end up interfering with adhesion of coatings, or causing fisheyes on any painted finish... Wax is much better, as it stays on the sliding surface and does not migrate like silicone.
@tomholley6904
@tomholley6904 2 роки тому
@Alfredo Márquez I'm thinking he meant in place of the sand paper he used a tube of silicone and spread it out like a sheet of "grippy" rubber. It will completely cure so as to not interfere with the surface of the good pieces being cut. Also, it will not scratch the piece if you are cutting something that had already been finished.

Срезанные торцы хоть как-то можно было загерметизироыать, но и это не помогло бы. Тут паркетная или инженерная доска подошла бы больше. Во вторых он приклеил на них наждачку. @@marcelo403polo2 actually, my circular saw also has the vacuum ataachement, and as for chipping, well better blade then :D but still it is a track saw quide not the saw itself. right now im thinkin, to what to change the sandpaper (exactly the pre-finished panels) maby felt or rubber.
@marcelo403polo2

@@TheOvercharge I guess you could try same stuff as festool and makita is using. Kinda rubbery 2 strips. Pretty good friction on prepainted panels. @dmfieldbds
@dmfieldbds 3 роки тому
Thank you for the inspiration and idea for the track. I stole your idea but simplified it a little. Like you I used the laminate flooring but had to glue two pieces together to give me enough width and instead of a U track rail I used an L track rail. This allowed me to use a U section attached directly to parallel fence that came with my saw. I turned the fence upside down so it cleared the table. Attached a strip of wood to the fence with a minimal recess to allow the strip of wood to contact the full length of the saw baseplate. I then attached the U channel guide to the wood. It doesn’t matter that the screw heads protrude into the channel as it sits over the L shape of the track. This negates having to construct special brackets to fix the guide to the saw. As long as you are careful positioning the track against the stop there is no play in the guide as it travel along the rail. I also taped some nonslip matting (like you use to stop items slipping in the car) instead of the sandpaper to the base. Hope this helps someone who hasn’t the skills, like me, to make a bracket.

Looks like a good alternative to other methods. What sets a great DIY method is knowing what you are suppose to do. Silent videos without comment and explanation doesnot help one to successfully duplicate the demonstrated process, so DIY becomes a trial and error process. An exact replica of this tracksaw or any other is only possible with detailed information. Great video and bravo for the owner but again I will prefer a track saw that I can build to exact specification. 👍

Could vinyl flooring that already has the rubber backing be used instead of the flooring you used here? AND instead of a candle for the wax, what about using wax like the kind used for chalk painting furniture? I have these on hand and don't have taper candles.

I think you are spot on with the use of the vinyl flooring with the rubber backing. I don’t know why you’d opt for sandpaper, when it limits you from using this set up on anything where you don’t want to mar the surface. Not sure about the wax question, if there would be some inherent difference that would make it less desirable, but I suppose you could experiment on a pice of scrap flooring and saw outside of this project, just to see if it works.

Hello from Australia!, I have subscribed!, the best DIY track saw on the internet!. You are a genius my friend. Where did you buy the metal C-channel's?, and what are the dimensions for both channels?.

Where is the answer to this question, does look like 2 x C channels, but need paired exactly, that is the clincher. So where do they come from?

This is US / Can market, but dimensions should help anyone search for right material, match outside dimension with inside of track for your saw, X2 for the wall thickness in the channel dimensions on the site, eg, a 1" channel will take a .75" inside with .125" walls, hope it helps someone. www.metalsupermarkets.com/metals/aluminum/aluminum-6063-channel/
