I’m 37. I don’t know why, but this scene has always had a nostalgic therapeutic quality to it. I always come back and watch it when I‘ve been having a hard time falling asleep, and it always helps.

Yes, and I'm also surprised that Marge didn't care enough about Bart's well-being to do something about Homer constantly almost hitting Bart with the car in the garage every time he'd get home from work when she was home-schooling Bart in the garage. I suppose it never occurred to her to have it be in the basement or somewhere inside the house after Homer almost hit Bart with the car the first time.

I once drowsed off a little bit while driving. I was already tired and fighting against it, and the next thing I now I was opening my eyes realizing I couldn't recall the last few seconds! Fortunately no harm to anyone had happened, but it was absolutely terrifying and the adrenaline kick was enough to wake me up until I could safely stop the car to let someone else drive! Never push to far when driving, lads, if you feel tired, make a safe stop and rest somewhere!

To put it into context: if you try and drive after you've been awake for 16 hours, your concentration levels are equivalent to someone with a BAC of .05. If you try and drive after you've been awake for 24 hours, your concentration levels are about the same if you had half a bottle of hard liquor.

On the one hand what Homer did was incredibly irresponsible, but on the other hand it's pretty impressive that he managed to fall asleep at the wheel and still get the car back to his garage whilst only causing relatively minor damage along the way. The final icing on the cake was the fact that he even made it back to his bed with only a second to spare on the alarm clock. And for the snooty commenters, yes I know it's a cartoon but I'm allowed to be impressed damn it!
