She wasn't a single mother. She was a recently-abandoned wife in what had been a dual-income family (mom's working clothes suggested a professional job, too) living in a house with four bedrooms and one bathroom, and decor from over 10 years ago. Still totally plausible, even in California.

@@arcanejack Paul Rudd has a recurring gag on Conan where he shows that clip from Mac and Me where the kid falls off the cliff with his wheelchair. At one point, when he was advertising Ant-Man, he said that Marvel didn't want him to use that clip, but instead he showed a clip from Ant-Man which then transitioned into that scene from Mac and Me just for pranks.

When I was a kid, I had to sit through 'Mac and Me' three times - THREE times. What made it even worse is that the last time I was at a kid's party and we all got to choose which film to watch and one kid convinced everyone else that 'Mac and Me' was actually good, despite my protests. And it wasn't even his party.

Oddly, ET is one of the best movies I've seen exactly once, opening weekend. It was good enough that all the major plot points stayed with me, well enough that I can recall them, and yet I ever felt the urge to watch it again. Well made movie with no complaints, I just spent the next 35-odd years without once getting the specific urge to watch it again more than anything else I could watch.

Absolutely same. Thanks to having parents who didn't care what I saw, I managed to see the Predator before ET and it managed to scare me less than that gross little turd.

Hello, I'll leave a message: I just finished this movie a minute ago.I am a 25 year old guy, this is the first movie where I cried like a baby. This should forever be a classic. Peak cinema. Yes, Steven Spielberg might have taken Satyajit Ray's script, but has delivered it like a wave in the ocean. Had everything, this movie has my heart.

That...that was the point. The point was that E.T. was actually a really good movie with very few problems or plot holes, while Mac & Me was...utter garbage that followed it surprisingly closely from a plot perspective.
