I often watch Japanese cooking channel. It's simple, not too much step and ingredients to the point i was really shocked. "That's it? Is it really not bland??" 😂 As someone who always eats spicy food, I don't think i will like bland food. But well, i will take the cooking technique 🤣

I always told people who want to try "Authentic Japanese Food" this. But 98% they won't believe me until they try it themselves 🤷🏻‍♀️ I once have to host foreign colleagues on business trip. Out of the blue they said they wanted to eat authentic Japanese food, like the very traditional one. I already warned them that they won't like it, because i already learned their food preference and their taste bud level (😂) during their stay. Yet they insisted. So i took them to one of the restaurant, try to recommend the tamer foods from the menu for them but give up and let them choose anyway. Needless to say, they realized the mistake on the first bite. Went silent and look at each other, then look at me apologetically while I'm just raising my eyebrow and silently said "see?". We went to the yoshinoya afterward. But then again, it's not totally "wasted". The experience and memory is priceless. And surely they won't make a same mistake again next time 😌

This happens everywhere... peaseant food was only good in lands of plenty like continental india, mainlanð china, turkey, post colonial america where even the poorest were generally safe from starvation unless manmade and natures bounties were plentiful, in places with harsh winters and harsher wars the foods taste was usually of least concern and nowhere were these issues worse than isolationist late and post sengoku japan. Most of the flavours loved by japanese people today came from outside... but that doesnt make them less japanese. They have been enriched embibed and renewed by your culture. And you have kept many foods alive that have died in their place of origin or even modified them to be totally distinct. Im indian and i love japanese curry which is derived from indian curry but is totally a unique japanese food at this point. Or cutlets... they really arent popular elsewhere but you guys do crazy things with them and things like soba buns, melon pan, curry donuts are great inventions... katsu.... food is always evolving and japanese food is what the japanese eat... traditions are important and show us where we come from but embracing the new is what makes your cuisine truly great.

It's like us here in PH, we have this thing called "Balot" some like it but not all, if a foreigner eats a balot, we tell them that they're much more of a Filipino that us locals 😂😂😂😂

The original Chinese version of Sushi is very different from the Japanese version, so yes, Sushi is a traditional dish. Udon and Soba are also Japanese, as are many other delicious dishes. So yes, as far as I'm concerned, I love 和食. In fact, "Traditional food" doesn't mean much, just consult a European cookbook from the Middle Ages or older and you'll understand that it's very different from today's cuisine. Honestly, I don't think there's a single country that has preserved its traditional cuisine, whatever that means.

To each their own, but I want to be the comment in defense of Japanese food ❤ I live for osechi! I do a full 5-tier set by hand (it isn't expensive but cooking starts about a week ahead of time, and the final 3 days of the year are just cooking and cleaning). I'd only recommend doing it if you love cooking 😅 My favourite is tataki gobo and my husband's is nishiki tamago, while my son just eats everything because that's how 3 year olds are lol For everyday, my favourite foods are yudofu and grilled shishito or eggplant. Grilling isn't only a Japanese technique, but I feel like robatayaki is yummy for everyone, and is a part of a more relaxed washoku. And think about how fresh and yummy and slightly bitter yomogi is! Give me a kusamochi over chocolate cake any day... or maybe a kurumimochi. If I need comfort, then no amount of Ben & Jerry's is going to heal me like a bowl of real miso soup. I like that you can taste the food, it's not just salt or sugar. What's the point of eating if it all just tastes like salt?
