The building codes were updated in 2010 to outlaw huge objects overhanging the street, which can be a falling debris hazard. I don't know the exact dimensions but these changes are not as recent as the video implies it to be. In fact, Hong Kong has *already* lost the vast majority of these signs as buildings have been updated to code over the past 14 years.

There are LED light strips in diffusing tubes that look (almost) exactly like neon lights, and they’re MUCH lighter & MUCH cheaper to operate. I think many of those old bulky signs could be replaced with thinner, lighter (& up-to-code) LED tubes, & keep the nostalgic style!
@canto_v12
@canto_v12 11 днів тому
AFAIK, Hong Kong's building codes no longer let signs hang out that far from buildings. They are a fall hazard and they block firefighting.
@johnny5k
@johnny5k 11 днів тому
@@canto_v12 And afaik those new codes are because those old signs required massive metal structures to support the glass/Neon lighting, since around 80 years ago. They could make new, nearly paper-thin, smaller & lighter signs now, that would be much less of a hazard. Which was my point.

Hong Kong is full of Karens. But in reality these are fire/rescue and falling object hazards. The building code made these huge overhanging signs illegal in 2010, and buildings have already been dragging it on for 14 years depending on the original inspection / repair order date.

Hong Kong has been existed over 150 years, there are typons few times/ years, but it didn't seem to have major damages. Must be a CCP policy, to remove Hong Kong unique identity. The Cannes Film festival best actor winning film IN THE MOOD FOR LOVE was based on the 1960's Hong Kong. The colorful backdrop in the rain were lit up by those colorful neon streets lights. Once these current neon signs are replace/remove, it will be difficult to make period films in the future. The director mentioned that the old buildings in the story has to be filmed in Thailand because they can't find 2 1960's style buildings in Hong Kong when they made the film during 2000. The neo sign collector could start a neon museum like Vegas did, where all the retired neon signs are. I spent a few nights a month during 2011-2023 to renew my Chinese Visa for Guangzhou English teaching job. I strolled the streets in mongkok bargain shopping until midnight. This report brought back memories 😶 Hong Kong is not the same anymore after CCP control.

In reality this has been going on since 2010 when the building codes were updated to outlaw these hazardous signs. The best time to see them would have been in the 70s and 80s as they were rampant across most of the city. As people gained affluence after those decades, it became highly undesirable to live around them. I never liked walking under those as they always looked dangerous--I'm glad they are going away. They can be kept in special heritage areas or in museums--they do not belong in the public environment anymore.
