After the invasion of the fierce hordes of Balchoth, Gondor is on a brink of destruction. The Ruling steward Cirion places his hope to the North, to the half-forgotten nation of the Horselords. Will the knight Borondir succeed and convey Cirion's message?
Horn of Gondor fan film was made in the Czech Republic and depicts a lesser-known chapter from the Tolkien's world, set 500 years before the story of The Lord of the Rings.

Borondir was one of six riders sent out by Steward Cirion to seek the aid of the Northmen when the Balchoth threatened Gondor's northern borders. He was the only one to reach Eorl the Young alive, and brought him the Red Arrow and the Seal of the Stewards. On the journey South, he showed knowledge of Lothlórien; he understood the strange mist they had to pass was not magic from Dol Guldur, but rather an effort by Galadriel to stop such magic. Borondir brought the Northmen to the Battle of the Field of Celebrant, but did not survive the battle. His body was taken to the Silent Street, and his name and deeds were remembered in song: Rochon Methestel, "Rider of Last Hope".

This is absolutely one of the great passages is Tolkien's "history" that (sadly like most of it) is not widely known. And this is probably the best fan film there is. It's absolutely outstanding. The fight scene alone should make Hollywood die of shame. Acting, costumes, everything's superb. That gorge where Borondir blows the horn is very like how I imagine Nargothrond or Menegroth. Boba Fett Really what the PJ films showed of the Easterlings was just based on “eastern cultures”, such as Persians,Mongols,Turkic peoples, etc. However in the books little is described of the Easterlings, only that some fought on wagons, and that there were new types of Easterlings during the third age that were short, grim, bearded like dwarves, and fought using axes. So seeing this new sort of Germanic type easterling is actually an interesting touch!

I am avid for any Tolkien related productions and have just discovered this! What a masterpiece, with probably almost no budget and a minimal production team! Amazon, with all their billions, pale in comparison to this and they have much to learn from you. The music, the costumes, the actors, the gravitas, the surroundings, the light, the swordfight, the dialogue, all feel right, feel as they are supposed to... It is a wonderful feeling to know now that there is the "Horn of Gondor", a fitting tribute to Tolkien, paired with "The Hunt for Gollum" and "Born of Hope". Thank you for this and I will share it wherever I can and donate!

I was just going to comment about how stellar the fight choreography was! Much better than the choreography that guy that Hollywood seems to hire for nearly every sword film (including LoTR). Don’t remember his name. He dumbs the fighting down and it basically looks like two kids fighting with sticks where they are trying to hit the other guys sword instead of their opponent. The sword play in this was infinitely more authentic looking. I came away thinking, “These guys really know what their doing!” Loved the subtle disarming moves and how he frequently pushed on the blade with his other hand and rotated. Reminded me of Judo throws.

It would be definitely epic to see this story in greater detail, the full scale production with great epic battle of the Field of Celebrant, and other moments, including Galadriel's magic aiding the Eotheod: "In this peril Cirion's thought turned at last in desperation to the Éothéod, and he determined to send messengers to them. But they would have to go through Calenardhon and over the Undeeps, and then through lands already watched and patrolled by the Balchoth 24 before they could reach the Vales of Anduin. This would mean a ride of some four hundred and fifty miles to the Undeeps, and more than five hundred thence to the Éothéod, and from the Undeeps they would be forced to go warily and mostly by night until they had passed the shadow of Day Guldur. Cirion had little hope that any of them would get through. He called for volunteers, and choosing six riders of great courage and endurance be sent them out in pairs with a day's interval between them. Each bore a message learned by heart, and also a small stone incised with the seal for the Stewards, 25 that he should deliver to the Lord of the Éothéod in person, if he succeeded in reaching that land. The message was addressed to Eorl son of Léod, for Cirion knew that he had succeeded his father some years before, when he was but youth of sixteen, and though now no more than five and twenty was praised in all such tidings as reached Gondor as a man of great courage and wise beyond his years. Yet Cirion had but faint hope that even if the message were received it would be answered. He had no claim on the Éothéod beyond their ancient friendship with Gondor to bring them from so far away with any strength that would avail. The tidings that the Balchoth were destroying the last of their kin in the South, if they did no know it already, might give weight to his appeal, if the Éothéod themselves were not threatened by any attack. Cirion said not more, 26 and ordered what strength he bad to meet the storm. He gathered as great a force as he could, and taking command of it himself made ready as swiftly as might be to lead it north to Calenardhon. Hallas his son he left in command at Minas Tirith. The first pair of messengers left on the tenth day of Súlimë; and in the event it was one of these, alone of all the six, who got through to the Éothéod. He was Borondir, a great rider of a family that claimed descent from a captain of the Northmen in the service of the Kings of old. 27 Of the others no tidings were ever heard, save of Borondir's companion. He was slain by arrows in ambush as they passed near Dol Guldur, from which Borondir escaped by fortune and the speed of his horse. He was pursued as far north as the Gladden Fields, and often waylaid by men that came out of the Forest and forced him to ride far out of the direct way. He came at last to the Éothéod after fifteen days, for the last two without food; and he was so spent that he could scarce speak his message to Eorl. It was then the twenty-fifth day of Súlimë. Eorl took counsel with himself in silence; but not for long. Soon he rose, and he said: "I will come. If the Mundburg falls, whither shall we flee from the Darkness?" Then he took Borondir's hand in token of the promise. Eorl at once summoned his council of Elders, and began to prepare for the great riding. But this took many days, for the lost had to be gathered and mustered, and thought taken for the ordering of the people and the defence of the land. At that time the Éothéod were at peace and had no fear of war: though it might prove otherwise when it became known that their lord had ridden away to battle far off in the South. Nonetheless Eorl saw well that nothing less than his full strength would serve, and he must risk all or draw back and break his promise. At last the whole host was assembled; and only a few hundreds were left behind to support the men unfitted for such desperate venture by youth or age. It was then the sixth day of the month of Víressë. On that day in silence the great éohere set out, leaving fear behind, and taking with them small hope; for they knew not what lay before them, either on the road or at its end. It is said that Eorl led forth some seven thousand fully-armed riders and some hundreds of horsed archers. At his right hand rode Borondir, to serve as guide so far as he might, since he had lately passed through the lands. But this great host was not threatened or assailed during its long journey down the Vales of Anduin. Such folk of good or evil kind as saw it approach fled out of its path for fear of its might and splendour. As it drew southward and passed by southern Mirkwood (below the great East Bight), which was now infested by the Balchoth, still there was no sign of men, in force or in scouting parties, to bar their road or to spy upon their coming. In part this was due to events unknown to them, which had come to pass since Borondir set out; but other powers also were at work. For when at last the host drew near to Dol Guldur, Eorl turned away westward for fear of the dark shadow and cloud that flowed out from it, and then he rode on within sight of Anduin. Many of the riders turned their eyes thither, half in fear and half in hope to glimpse from afar the shimmer of the Dwimordene, the perilous land that in legends of their people was said to shine like gold in the springtime. But now it seemed shrouded in a gleaming mist and to their dismay the mist passed over the river and flowed over the land before them. Eorl did not halt. "Ride on!" he commanded. "There is no other way to take. After so long a road shall we be held back from battle by a river-mist?" As they drew nearer they saw that the white mist was driving back the glooms of Dol Guldur, and soon they passed into it, riding slowly at first and warily; but under its canopy all things were lit with a clear and shadowless light, while to left and right they were guarded as it were by white walls of secrecy. "The Lady of the Golden Wood is on our side, it seems ,” said Borondir. "Maybe," said Eorl. "But at least I will trust the wisdom of Felaróf. 28 He scents no evil. His heart is high, and his weariness is healed: he strains to be given his head. So be it! For never have I had more need of secrecy and speed." Then Felaróf sprang forward, and all the host behind followed like a great wind, but in a strange silence, as if their hooves did not beat upon the ground. So they rode on, as fresh and eager as on the morning of their setting-out, during that day and the next; but at dawn of the third day they rose from their rest, and suddenly the mist was gone, and they saw that they were far out in the open lands. On their right the Anduin lay near, but they had almost passed its great eastward loop, 29 and the Undeeps were in sight. It was the morning of the fifteenth day of Víressë, and they had come there at a speed beyond hope." The battle itself would be also curious, it would amazing material for epic cinema hehe in one version Tolkien even had this idea: Eorl the Young leads his people, the Éothéod or Rohirrim, out of the North from the sources of Anduin, and rides to the help of Cirion, Steward of Gondor. With his aid the great victory of the Field of Celebrant is won. Elladan and Elrohir rode also in that battle. From that time forth the brethren never cease from war with the Orcs because of Celebrían. The Peoples of Middle-Earth, HoME Vol 12, Part 1, Ch 8, The Tale of Years of the Third Age There is no other writing extant before the final typescript of The House of Eorl from which the text in Appendix A was printed, save for a single typescript page. This is the first page of the text, beginning 'Eorl was the lord of the Men of Eotheod', and my father wrote it with the old version ... before him; but he expanded it almost to the form that it has in Appendix A. It includes, however, the following passage (struck out on the typescript) after the words 'the Riders hunted them over the plains of Calenardhon' In the forefront of the charge they saw two great horsemen, clad in grey, unlike all the others, and the Orcs fled before them; but when the battle was won they could not be found, and none knew whence they came or whither they went. But in Rivendell it was recorded that these were the sons of Elrond, Elladan and Elrohir. The Peoples of Middle-Earth, HoME Vol 12, Part 1, Ch 9, The Making of Appendix A: The House of Eorl Sons of Elrond never before have appeared in any cinematic adaptation of Tolkien works :).

Wow. Nicely done fight choreography. I do really appreciate the "mordhau" strike (sword held by it's blade and used as a hammer) and multiple halfswording, wrestling, using mail as it's supposed to be - to get a blow on it, and block opponent's arm. Views of Czech's landscape are beautiful as always... But the most impressive is... Acting skill of the horse! Cheers from Poland, ahoj!

Maybe....using swords to deflect blows from other swords was only done in the most desperate circumstances. Swords in most cases were secondary weapons behind some type of pole arm and against certain types of armor used as jabbing weapons. An edge on edge strike between swords does damage to the cutting surface, often significant gouging and dulling. It really is amazing though how little is understood to this day about medieval combat. How the exhaustion factor was over come and the true lethality of weapons vs armour.
@magnusnordeidebrede892
@magnusnordeidebrede892 3 роки тому
@@jessicageerligs339 Take a look at historical sources of dueling, and duel masters, which HEMA (Historical European Martial Arts) is based on. Swords binding on edge happened all the time, and was so common the masters made systems based around "fighting from the bind". You are right that one handed swords om battlefields were often sidearms, or backup weapons, but two handed swords were used a lot during the War of the Roses and larger swords were used by several HRE-based soldiers, like the Landsknecht Doppelsöldner.
@jessicageerligs339
@jessicageerligs339 3 роки тому
I am no expert for sure, i am regurgitating what i have seen from some channels on ytube. I can see this being more frequent as shields became less prevalent and swords became cheaper/easier to mass produce. In the era of this particular video suggesting almost Norse technology your sword would have been a very precious resource indeed. Never knew it was called "binding" ....thanks. and i am so happy fans do great work like this.
@magnusnordeidebrede892
@magnusnordeidebrede892 3 роки тому
@@jessicageerligs339 It's based on Middle-Earth, which has Norse and Germanic inspiration, yes, but Gondor's weaponry and armour is way better than what the northmen of Scandinavia had. This knight of Gondor is using what we would call a longsword. The Norse would always use a shield with their swords, as they were one handed and had small crossguards, sometimes never. Using your shield to block an incoming blow means that the edge of your sword won't be damaged in a bind, and why parry when you have a shield? One thing I also forgot to mention is that repairing a damaged blade isn't that hard. Sure, it won't look as pretty as it did when it was "factory"-new, but it will do the job. If it is a highly decorated blade, you most likely have enough funds to get a new one anyway. :D
