Looking forward to proud Gordon running again "Look at me now!" Just make sure you put him on a passenger train for the test, otherwise he’ll likely go into a strop "a goods train, shhh, the shame of it! Shhh, the shame of it!"

I'm thinking that I would paint the wheels black.Or possibly mix up batch of blue paint. The inside of the tender frame would be a good place to test my paint matching as no one would see it.

I know they're considered archaic now but Ringfield motors seem so much better designed and serviceable than their pancake motor counterparts in the US.

A very timely video. I have literally just finished the same repair. I picked up Gordon (made in China) and his coaches for a very reasonable price. However, his tender had a bad case of Mazak rot and had crumbled to pieces. Gordon and Edward share the same tender frame (S4470/X8775 suitable for R383 not China made R9291) I wasn't sure which I had so I thought I would give it a go anyway. Like you I found the plastic tender collector clip did not fit into the frame. Both tender frames are basically the same except for the gap where the tender collector fits. Thankfully I still had the bits of original China made tender and used it as a guide to file down the gap a few mill to accomodate the plastic clip. Btw The 5 pole motor (with those awful pickups) is actually Gordons original motor. Now he is back and running nicely. The Margate tender frame is a lighter blue than the Chinese tender/loco body. I did plan to repaint it a darker blue, but I think it actually looks better black like yours. Maybe with some parts picked out in red? However, I am reluctant to take it apart as the clip in motor design is terrible. Hope it makes sense and helps anyone else with the same issue. Thanks for sharing your videos they have given me the confidence to do my own basic repairs. Other than basic services Gordon was my first successful job where a bit of surgery and fettling was required. Look forward to seeing part 2

Looks more like a School frame beneath the tender, the models for Gordon, James and Edward all used Southern tenders instead of Midlands, why they didn’t modify the 4F tender for James and Edward is beyond me (maybe they didn’t have the Airfix 4F tooling when they tooled up James and Gordon in the 80s), certainly not Henry’s frame though as his was all green, rather than green with black axleboxes

Nicely done Bill,hopefully another lad that will keep his interest in the hobby,the show must have played its part in bringing model railways to children in a tech era. I remember Casey Jones growing up…who knows Bill you might get something American,that would be interesting to see.

The motor with the green wheels is a uk made one . The other motor and the loco is a made in china model

I was just about to comment thinking "hang on, that Gordon is meant to go with the 5 pole motor!" due to the tender pickups as you found out, when repairing a James with mazak rot on the tender frame i ended up doing a bit of filing to help the pin pickup sit in correctly as i used an older Made in England frame like youve found out. Id repaint or replace the wheels with black ones as personally itd bug me if he ran around with green wheels, but of course thats up to you mistro Bill
