I ALMOST went to this theater but found a different one. There were cops everywhere that night and I had no clue why. Had so many phone calls and texts the next morning making sure I was okay.

Wow. What state was this in again? I remember a mass shooting that happened in texas but i can't remember what city. It happened in a LUBY'S. I believe it took place when mass shootings weren't that common yet. Unfortunately, the world we live in is infested with real demons. My heart n prayers go to all the survivors and victims. As well as the ones that we're almost at the wrong place at the wrong time.

Surprised at the amount of people in the comments who don't remember this happening. This was a very real tragedy that unfortunately effected the lives of many. Yes, because a dozen panicky casuals firing blindly in a dark movie theater in the vague direction they're hearing other gunshots from would have made this whole thing safer. My friend was there that night. She's still very traumatized by what happened. It's still so strange to hear this from another's perspective, as this took place in a city not far from mine -- I was in Florida at the time of the shooting, but I've lived in Colorado for most of my life. I've actually been to that theater a few times since then. It's a really nice theater, but unfortunately it now has a bad reputation for being where this shooting took place. My sincerest condolences go out to the victims and survivors of this shooting. Nobody should have to go through that.

I had two friends in theater 8, my husband was a first responder that night (he was invited to the movie. At this point he and I were dating, he opted to help me watch his roommates kids instead) and then got the call. Another friend was the er nurse at children’s hospital. My daughters aunt was a 911 dispatch that night. They use this call in training now, my husband is getting his critical care paramedics certificate and had to sit through this class. The same aunt moved to another state and during her training they were playing the dispatch tapes and recognized her voice and stared at her in complete disbelief and horror. The whole team did the best they could in such a horrifying situation. The police and bomb squad had to go to his apartment once they realized it was rigged to explode had anyone set foot into his door. I’ll never for get that night. Ever. I’m crying as I listen to this and type this out. Forever engraved into my memory.

It's hard to believe it's been 8 years since this happened. I remember seeing it all over the news. It's chilling to hear a survivor's account of the events of that evening. So many lives taken and many lives changed forever. Horrible. To the writer of this story: I'm glad you, your husband and friends survived. I'm so sorry you had to experience this nightmare. I hope that you are all doing well now.

I was born in and grew up in Aurora. I grew up going to this theater, and it was my first job as a teenager. Thankfully, I hadn't worked there for several years prior to the shooting. Being so familiar with the theater, I could see in my mind's eye everything that was described, right down to theater 9 in particular. This event has always been surreal to me. You never think that a place you grew up spending time, a place that you once worked, would ever have something like this happen. I wasn't there that night, nor did I know anybody who was, but if I'd been paying attention to the date, I would have been there. As it happened, I lived smack in between the theater and one of the hospitals that the victims were taken to (University Hospital), and heard the sirens all night, not knowing what was going on until a friend called me the next day to make sure I was safe. I'm glad that he didn't kill more, and I'm glad I didn't realize what the date was that night, and I'm glad that none of my friends were there (though, several said that they almost were). I'm glad that my friends who lived less than a block away from his apartment were able to get out, and that the police didn't accidentally detonate the explosive. I'm glad that he will never see freedom again.

I'm a huge batman fan, I remember this very clearly. My friend and I where so scared of a copy cat, we almost didn't go see opening day. I remember we walked into the theater, and there where some flowers laid on the ground out side, in solidarity for the victims. My best friend and I walked in, and sat down, we where talking about how sad everything was when the movie started. Not even three minutes in, the screen began to glitch. Everyone started whispering, and the next thing I know, people are screaming, and there's a dark figure standing on the walkway/handicap aisle, holding something large and vaguely gun shaped in the air. I didn't even stop to see if it was what everyone though, I just pushed my best friend to the ground, and hovered over her, a moment later, the lights come back up and we see a sheepish manager holding a walkie talkie, not a gun like I thought, and explaining that there was something wrong with the screen. People laughed, but then we all sort of looked at each other and realized that for the first time, there was a reason to fear a mass shooting in a freaking movie theater. It was a very tragic moment.

I’m so proud of this survivor . The things she has gone through yet she has still held on is very brave of her . 😞💜

Really not much to say, but R.I.P to all these poor innocent individuals who had unforgiving and unfortunate turn of event that night. I just don't understand, why aren't we living in a world where no psychopaths exists, no violent or war? Why can't there be peace? In my opinion, this world we are living in should be called Dystopia and should be for the rest of the eternity.

Then where would all of the fun be in life? The thrill that you can die at any second? The thrill of life?

Its kinda what makes life worth living, that you could die at any moment... Its stupidly poetic really

BattleScar Sorry, but the world isn’t perfect. I agree it’s too bad that people lose lives everyday to a number of things such as disease and crazy people but the world has always been this way

I remember hearing about this shooting. In 2012 I was 9 and I was scared of the shooter when it was on the news. I think I didn't know he was in jail after the trial for some reason and I was scared he was in my area. It's good to know he's behind bars for atleast 3,000 years and that there were survivors. I wish the best for the families of the people who died.

I live in Aurora co and I live 5 minutes from the theater and I knew friends who's siblings got killed in the century theater. It was so sad and I could here the shots as they rang off in the distance and 6-12 sirens racing through my neighborhood. I remember going there as a kid and it was cool. But on that day, I decided to not go. Thank god I had tests still. The man was James Holmes who went in and shot during the plane scene and would open fire when it was too loud to hear shots. Then to hear that James had jerry-rigged his hotel and put loud music. I will never forget this night as I heard what he did as he walked up and down aiming the gun and shooting people as they didn't know what to do.

@CorpseHusband Thank you for doing this! It's much more personalized to hear the actual accounts of the people.
