The spent an entire season beautifully and effectively building up Alicent as a villain, and then at the last second chickened out and tried to redeem her. This is the same problem that happened in GOT, the show writers are too afraid that if they don't bend over backwards to redeem certain characters then the audience will hate them. It is this type of thinking that led to Cersei, Tyrion, and Tywin (as well as many, many other characters) being whitewashed in the show

I just rewatched the first season & I'm glad I did. When I watched it when it initially aired, I didn't like it. I thought it was boring. I literally just finished it & it was GREAT! I loved the original series & this one is fitting to be in the same family. Watch it again. You may see it from a different perspective if you didn't like it the first time.
