Andrew accompanies the organization Planet Wild to visit the excellent work of Trees for the Future. Planet Wild is funding the planting of 40,000 trees in this project so we are here to assess the system and report on the situation on the ground.

Thank you! This is permaculture heaven for me. All that lushness. Hopefully they keep expanding the wall northward, which I truly believe can happen. It will help if we can change larger scale farming practices everywhere to something closer to restoration ag, a la Mark Shepard. This will further support regreening into drier areas. This will bring more food diversity to the local and global marketplace, localize resilience everywhere, as well as economic prosperity.

Sri Lanka is being toted as a failure of organic agriculture since farmers were forced to stop using chemical inputs. It would be swell if you looked into this because we all could use a little understanding of what went wrong there if so much success was experienced elsewhere?

I am chairman of Gambia School Support, we assist 11 pre-primary schools in The Gambia with 1,500 pupils. Most of the schools have 'gardens'. The constraint is water supply as no rain for most of the year. Where we have solar boreholes the gardens and growth is amazing. A Moringa seed planted in Feb is now a 12ft tree!

@catherineincanada1874 I have a big one on my family's property. We cut it all the time and it grows so fast and leans onto the neighbor's roof. And it made little moringa baby plants everywhere.

Hi, if you are interested in sharing ideas, I used to help run a project that did school gardens and environmental education. If you don't mind answering, is there any cooking going on at the schools? You could use the grey water from the kitchens to water at least some plants. There are videos by Andrew Millison on how to do this. You could also look into drip irrigation. We used to have a college professor who gave us workshop on different farming techniques so that we could adapt the ideas for the children.

I am so glad that there is people out there doing it. On the other hand it is sad that the people living in Senegal did not get the necessary help from the government from the start. Screw education on maths and science. Teach them how to farm.

There's no valid reason why we have desserts in planet earth besides laziness and lack of initiatives such as this the profit driven corporations rather have the world dry and the select few of their farming friends making money at the expense of global warming. If companies such as Coca-Cola and them can join hands in this initiative, global warming can become a thing of a past

I hate to be nitpicky, but farming relies on mathematic and scientific principles, you can teach both. Farming would be fundamentally difficult without understanding the water cycle, and you can better divvy up your land by understanding maths.@@reynardbrits2839

As an ecological engineer, I like the idea that "we need diversity to face instability". seeing a solution that has a diverse outcome and also brings yields is really an amazing idea.

It's totally an answer that's in line with evolutionary biology, monoculture breeds disease that will kill monoculture. Diversification suffers the same problem, but has more escape routes.

Going to food security and soil stability is first. The land is their wealth, their children their future and the women are the keepers of the Farm Garden. If you get the women on board, the project will grow and prosper. Great going everyone. I am very proud of the Senegalese for embracing this process and I hope to see a video soon with the announcement of 50 thousand Hectares and then maybe in ten years 100 thousand hectares and in another ten years 200 thousand Hectares planted in sustainable and valuable food forests.

I am a third generation farmer grown old,,,,and am so blown away by this project,,,it’s absolutely wonderful and wish I were once again in my twenties so I could follow this model on our land. Wonderful! These diverse food forests are bountiful blessings for the food they produce, and also for the microclimate they create which attracts insects (some of them beneficial, like honeybees and other pollinators) and birds who will eat the insects and keep the numbers down.

Would like to remind you that just over 100 years ago 80% of countries GDP was dedicated to just food, now is around 15% in developed countries and farmers account for about 5% of workforce. Establishing This type of small family run farms is a step backwards and it will ensure Senegal will never be able to compete with mega farms.

I am old enough to remember the 1970s. When the price of oil set off inflation, everyone was planting gardens in their back yards. I think part of the problem you are pointing out is that life has been too easy for too long.

We learned about the Great Green Wall in Sahel back in secondary school (~2015), but only covered the failure. Only now do I know that the programme has gained so much traction when utilising a new approach!! Well done to Plant Wild, Trees for Future and the local communities 👏👏

I'm no expert but what I've read about permaculture is pretty incredible in terms of restoring habitats, improving water tables and using sustainable farming methods to boost crop yields. It's all stuff that you have to teach people. These guys are doing an amazing service.

@@RoachDoggJr2 There are NGOs that do that. Even ones that supply doctors and nurses to such places (never heard of traveling nurses or doctors without borders?). Most of the work shown in the video is done by the locals themselves, the NGO only has to provide training and possibly the treestock - not sure whether they do or not. But either way, they use very little resources to get great progress towards their goal. It's a surprisingly efficient setup.

The more i see the application of permaculture the more I see that the starting time investment to permaculture is a huge barrier to converting farmland away from other profit crops for small communities. I grew up on a farm and my grandfather often talked about the poor farming practices that led to the dust bowl and poor farm land. Now we have crop rotation, windbreaks, contour farming, that saved the small family farm.

Go Andrew. I hope you keep busy the next 60 years turning that whole region into 50 million hectares of Food Forests across several countries in Western and Northern Africa. The best and unspoken benefit is to stabilize the ecosystem but it also stabilizes the human society as well. Prosperity means just that, the ability to sustain a good life using a sustainable life style and agriculture.

Not only because they can provide food and enhance the local diversity of life, but because they are socially and cooperatively based systems of community-building and mutual-aid. Awesome thanks a lot. We are trying to set our 33 acres up on the permaculture principles. Things are starting to look great in a few areas. Time has been limited. The greatest thing I’m glad we did straight away was put some fruit trees in . We lost probably 30-40% but some have thrived. Finally the last 6 months we have had great rains. An exciting year ahead as today I gave up my job.

My great grandparents had a homestead and they had a saying roughly translated to "A person who plants a tree has not wasted his life" so cheers to another one! I love this video. You can see I keep coming back to see it over and over. I really think this process of greening the Sahel and ultimately maybe even moving into the Sahara will be the shining example of renewable life and agriculture in Africa. I am sad every time I see a boat load of refugees heading to Europe. I want Africa to become a rich and vibrant continent with people making a great and peaceful world there, the envy of the rest of the Planet. Imagine that.

My husband and I plant ‘Anniversa-trees’ each year. This year we’ll be planting 12 trees. It’s such a fun tradition! Glad to see such a robust and impactful way your groups are collaborating for people and for trees!

This project is the answer to many prayers. Enough trees will prevent a lot of calamitous climate conditions west of Africa. God bless everyone involved in this replanting of the earth. Perhaps one day the whole Sahara will be restored. So happy for the people who can have constant diverse nourishment from the plant life. This is just genius!

I have a friend who works for a charity NGO in Kenia and they are also planting thousands of different species of trees to fight off climate change. In a way,they are much more proactive than we are. Im going to share this amazing project with him . Thankyou for this uplifting post.

They would never be able to grow the trees without the additional Co2. Thank god, we are going above the minimum of 200ppm of Co2 that plants need to survive.
